181  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Where are you mining? on: March 18, 2014, 03:59:15 PM
At this moment i'm mining bitcoins on btcguild. I was wondering where you people are mining btc? Maybe you can answer the below questions?

1) What pool are you mining?
2) Why this pool?
3) PPS or PPLNS?

Thanks!

1) Mining at https://directpool.net
2) This pool is 1% fee and any donations are given back to the bitcoin community by funding new bitcoin projects
3) It's fully PPLNS

I fully support projects that are for making the bitcoin network stronger Smiley

Hmmmmm.....I'm not sure that giving BTCGuild such bad press is wise - they have already proven themselves to be honest & trustworthy with regards to your proposed 51% attack, indeed, they are probably the most reputable pool out there with outstanding customer support to boot (unlike other pools I wont mention **coughcexcough**).

Anyways, as much as I like the idea of "giving back", I'll keep my hashing power with my preferred multi-merged coin mining pool. I would urge you to reconsider other merge mine-able coins though. Good luck  Wink

"**coughcexcough**" lool

I like Btcguild and don't think that the above poster is giving them bad press. That reddit post is an old post that basically points out the issues of any 1 mining pool growing too big and becoming unhealthy for the bitcoin network. Bad press is what the mass media gives the bitcoin network everytime a bitcoin mining pool got close to 51% power.. it's ridiculous.. i've lately given up on alternative coins lol got killed trading/mining those too many times Cheesy  Cool

Bitcoin wasn't worth much not so long ago......but people still mined it. Now look at it.

Every little bit counts  Wink

Besides, if miners don't want the altcoins then they can be donated.......

It's true.. "every little bit counts" but this isn't a pool for all merge mine-able coins you see.. this is the bitcoin pool that is keen on keeping security in mind while making sure the pool is stable. It's a way to prevent future 51% attacks but also the best part.. to give back to the bitcoin community

As soon as they add the other merged mined coins, i'll consider switching, until then, I'll be sticking with Bitparking.

http://mmpool.bitparking.com/main

Cool project though.  I'll look more detailed later to see if I change my mind.

I had a chat with the pool dev of directpool and he basically said the reason they didn't want to add anymore coins was is because they aren't worth much at all. (Ixcoin, Devcoin, I0coin and Groupcoin) For example, in 24hrs of mining with 700gh/s, ixcoin will fetch you $0.03 only, Devcoin will fetch you $0.01... it's really not worth adding the extra load onto the pool's server. Namecoin has some worth.. but the rest don't in my opinion..

This definitely is a cool project and i'm just waiting for my neptunes to come thru and i'll be mining at directpool for sure.. 1% pool fee and donations goto helping bitcoin community grow... you can't go wrong with that  Cool

That's a fair response; however, you'll be sorry when Ixcoins take over the world, haha... probably not...

Sometimes, more isn't always good Tongue  Cool Cool It's why Big pools that have too much hashrate need to shrink a little to make the bitcoin network stronger and healthier so that in the future no one ever starts a riot over possible 51% attacks

Congratulations on getting up & running!

Any plans to introduce more merge mined coins? This will help bring in the crowds  Wink

Which coins? I think that is why they attached Namecoin because its a merged mining pool, not sure though.

All of them. Currently it's possible to merge mine IXC, I0C, DVC, NMC, GRP & soon HUC (as soon as the bugs are ironed out) - might as well do the lot eh?  Wink

I do use Gyft but having amazon directly accept bitcoin would be huge
195  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-03-16] Mizuho Bank Listed as Defendant Over MtGox U.S Class Action on: March 16, 2014, 10:54:44 PM
Adding that bank to the lawsuit is a sure fire way to guarantee that traditional banking systems no longer allow any interaction with bitcoin businesses in their accounts.  That was about the dumbest thing anyone could have done...  This fiasco started at MK.  The leak of the phone call where the bank was trying to push the account to close, and he refused.  They should have forced his hand if they thought there were problems.  But to involve them in the lawsuit was fucking stupid and will be detrimental to the forward push between crypto-currency and the fiat/brick-mortar world that we're trying to gain acceptance to.

If Overstock.com's bank decides to stop doing business because of the bitcoin risk (even if his fiat is converted by Coinbase), then what -- all these big retailers you want to accept bitcoin won't touch it if their financial institutions threaten to stop doing business with them over it...

You've got a good point. But i would expect Overstock's CEO to be a lot more clever
196  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [6000 TH] BTC Guild - Pays TxFees+Orphan+NMC, Stratum, Private Servers on: March 16, 2014, 07:14:49 PM
Eleuthria,

I have never run PPS so it's a non event for me but it seems insane to me to have 6,200THs and have to lose sleep over getting wiped out because of bad luck.

The luck is what it is.  I have been mining since late last year and have never solved a block so bad luck is a relative term.  If I was solo my earnings would be 0.00BTC

Smiley

That's the thing that's hard for some people to realize.  It's one of the reasons when BTC Guild became a 51% threat I tried to get people off PPS by increasing the fees.  The larger the pool, the faster PPS makes you lose money, and the faster it gains money.  It doesn't decrease the highs and the lows, it simply makes them alternate more frequently.  It becomes a roller coaster, and the amount of stress it puts on you is immeasurable.  BTC Guild, when it was pure PPS, had days where I lost over 500 BTC.  It had days where I gained over 500 BTC.  In the long run, it made a profit, but the human mind is designed to place more emphasis on negative events/emotions than positive ones, and every time it was on a losing streak it was nothing but stress over "something must be wrong" even though nothing had changed internally between the two spikes of good/bad luck.

Keeping PPS is something I've done because it made sense.  It was more profitable for me.  But these days, I'm not concerned with maximum profit but instead trying to minimize risk.  My personal goal with BTC Guild has changed in the light of the non-stop "hacks" that major Bitcoin businesses claim to have happened, putting them out of business and screwing over their users.  While I personally believe most of those "hacks" were not hacks at all, it doesn't change the fact that the people who paid for it in the end were users, not the owners, who made off with lots of profit over the years.  In light of those events, my goals with BTC Guild have changed to make sure that if/when BTC Guild is closed down, it's on my own terms, and it's on a high note.  It seems like no Bitcoin business to date has actually shut down without their users suffering some kind of loss.

PPS is in stark contrast to that goal, since it includes a risk of bankruptcy, and increased risk of loss if the pool's hot wallet ever to be compromised.

PPS was great in the early days of bitcoin and even still it is a good option however there's just too much risk attached to it. Especially with hot wallet being at risk. I believe that is the reason why the new bitcoin pool.. DirectPool decided to only do pplns..

You should update the "ANN" in your title to show the total pool hashspeed.
