181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Preinstalling bitcoin client on: November 08, 2011, 03:18:18 PM
You should also configure Bitcoin to connect to specific nodes, to reduce initial startup and sync time. You can run your own, it's really easy, also see here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Fallback_Nodes#IPv4_Nodes
182  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Looking for lenders on: November 07, 2011, 09:51:21 PM
Notes: glbse charges 0.001 BTC for withdrawal.  For the buyback strategy to work, the bitcoins have to sit on glbse, which defeats the whole purpose.  Still, a good option to consider.

OP could simply send the coins directly from GLBSE to the interested parties (and I assume OP is gaining more than the 0,001 per withdrawal, otherwise he wouldn't offer the percentages to the lenders Smiley ). Alternatively, OP could keep just a reasonable amount in GLBSE for buybacks (5-10%?), and when the amount is consumed, he can send some more and so on...
183  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Looking for lenders on: November 07, 2011, 09:35:50 AM
OP, how about a listing on GLBSE? It will be much easier to manage (it should be trivial for the storage plan) and at the same time allow lenders to put up much smaller amounts than 50 BTC. You probably already know how much you will need in storage, issue that amount of shares at 1 BTC/share (or double at 0.5 or... or...), and you just have to pay dividends (weekly?). You can even automatize the buy back if you put buy orders at 0.999. On-demand plan would be possible too.
184  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: multiple instances, and read-only blockchain on: November 05, 2011, 07:23:39 AM
Probably not. A symlink doesn't guarantee read-only, it will depend on the target file rights. And if the second process can write to the target file, it will try. And it will probably not end well. You can try to run the second bitcoind process as another user that only has read rights on the target file and see what happens. It will most likely fail...

Remember to backup!

186  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What would happen on a Miner strike? on: November 04, 2011, 07:33:00 PM
I see this as the most plausible scenario:

"- Let's all strike!"*
"- Yeah!"*
"- Sure!"*
"- Count me in!"*

187  Other / Off-topic / Re: Interview With Jay Of Coinabul on: November 04, 2011, 07:23:34 PM
Jonathan, I can't discuss legalese, because I know nothing about California's and not even enough about local law here (I do suspect that it's more or less the same, we are in EU after all). My point was that for someone who doesn't know a thing about your history with Jay and only clicks on the YouTube link (just like I did), you come out as the aggressor and it looks bad on you.

Again, you might be completely right in everything you say about him and your relationship, but I don't think you're approaching the situation correctly. You know what my first thought was after the first 20 seconds of the video? "If someone would do this to me, he would get a few punches and the phone shoved down his throat". Of course, I am much calmer in real life and I would probably just leave or call security, but I suspect a lot of viewers had the same feeling. I don't think it helps you that they feel for the "victim" (Jay).

Repeat: I am only criticizing the method, not passing judgement on who is right in this conflict.
188  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [353 GH] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: November 04, 2011, 06:00:29 PM
If you want to check you NMC stats and don't natively read json, you can use the following Python script (5 minutes hack, only tested on Linux, no warranties). Write your own address, of course.

Code:
#!/usr/bin/env python

import json, urllib2, datetime

address = 'YOUR-NMC-ADDRESS'
url = 'http://eligius.st/~luke-jr/raw/5/NMC/balances.json'

data = json.load(urllib2.urlopen(url, timeout=5))
print "Address  : " + address
print "Balance  : " + str(data[address]['balance']/100000000.0)
print "Everpaid : " + str(data[address]['everpaid']/100000000.0)
print "Oldest   : " + str(datetime.datetime.fromtimestamp(data[address]['oldest']))
print "Newest   : " + str(datetime.datetime.fromtimestamp(data[address]['newest']))
189  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Buy and Sell Mt Gox USD on: November 04, 2011, 05:24:16 PM
I see a lot of Moneybookers here. I was under the impression that MB is not accepted by sellers because it's reversible, so I didn't even try to buy with it until I'm ready to buy a large amount so a international wire to MtGox will be worth it. Am I wrong?

Because if I am, I have a fully verified MB account and I'll buy a few coins or MTGUSD - MB is unfortunately the only easy way to do small international transfers from here. What should I do to make a seller trust me?
190  Other / Off-topic / Re: Interview With Jay Of Coinabul on: November 04, 2011, 11:18:12 AM
If I didn't see the video, I'd say you are all a bunch of 10 year olds. "You stole my mining rig and I'm going to put this online so everyone will know" "Oh yeah? Do that!" Come on guys, this is laughable.

I don't know Jay, I never spoke or written to him, I visited the Coinabul site a few times and that's it (I'm not even a customer). So I have no idea if or who stole what - it's not my problem.

Two little words of advice:

1. Mr. Paul Shumann should delete all evidence of how he did "business" or he'll lose credibility with his other partners. Mr. Shumann, you paid for hardware that a kid will use to mine this strange thing called Bitcoin, having only a fantasy business plan based on wishful thinking and then you're upset that it didn't work out? You believed a guy that said he's the greatest programmer in the world and didn't bother to check his work before throwing money his way? Really? Please PM me, I have the greatest business idea, we'll make billions! Smiley

2. OP, what you did is harassment. Maybe you had all the reasons, I don't know. So you got a door in the face - big deal. You deserved it and you should consider yourself lucky - this guy has a witness that you bothered him and you followed him after he repeatedly told you to leave him alone. Oh, and please believe me that if this were to happen here in Bucharest it's very-very likely that you would get some serious punches in the face and your camera destroyed. I am not sure if it can be used as evidence in USA, but you should remove that video from YouTube and try to solve any differences you have like grown ups.

192  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Prepaid debit cards? on: November 02, 2011, 04:28:22 PM
I assume that you could fill the card with your credit card, pay for gas with it, then do a chargeback and they could not get the money out of it.

You need a reason to do a chargeback. You can say the seller didn't provide the merchendise, or that you didn't use the card (it was stolen). You have extremely little chances of doing that in the real world, where hundreds of security cameras will prove that you did use the card yourself or that the seller did provide the goods.
193  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin PR did fail a bit on: October 30, 2011, 05:52:01 PM
OP, you just destroyed Romania's most well kept secret, I will have to send the BubbleGum Mafia to cover you in strawberry jelly now. Prepare to suffer.

Now that's in the open, I can tell you that this is completely true. The romanian currency, RON, doesn't really exist. Sure, when some stupid foreigner comes in and goes to an exchange house, he gets some colored bills, but those are actually printed on the spot. Some merchants will accept them, because it's fun to play along, but in reality we only deal with alternate currencies: chewing gum (with or without sugar, with sugar = 0,9 without sugar), instant coffee, baking soda, young gipsy children, prepaid mobile credit and so on.

These are used in shops because they are small and easy to carry, but on my business I usually deal with more valuable items. Last week I installed a few servers in a new office for a customer. I got the meat of a pretty big pig (I love pork steaks) and two brand new winter tires. I hope I can get another two tires from another customer who usually pays in chicken eggs. And I hope winter comes fast or that pork might go bad.

In the summer is better, because I get fruits and vegetables, in the winter usually objects. I remember 2 years ago a customer paid for a pretty large project (more than 6 months of work) with a second hand car, stolen from Germany. He was so nice he even gave me three sets of fake plates and gave me the number of a guy who can make me new plates on the spot. I actually went and made a set with 'ovidiusoft rulez!' and I paid with a few kilos of oranges and bananas.

I live on a flat so I don't accept living animals, but a good friend has a pretty large courtyard and he prefers to get chickens, ducks and so on. He has fresh eggs all the time, and last year he had a cow too (he also had a pretty big programming project). He would milk the cow in the morning, pour the milk in a few bottles, go to the store, get a pack of cigarettes and some change (chewing gum, of course - perfect for the smoker's bad breath).

Anyway, he lost the cow when he had to pay his taxes. They didn't want to accept eggs only, they insisted he need to pay 16% cow (the profit tax is 16% in Romania) so he had to give them 16% of the cow. That was one bloody tax payment, let me tell you... It was delicious, though.

-The End-

PS: Don't believe everything you read on the intertubes. It's been known that they will try to give you a gum or an instant coffee in small shops, mostly because they are trying to push some more stuff on you rather than because they don't have change, but it's not nearly as common place as you might understand from those articles. If that much gum was stolen, it's probably because it's easy to sell to children near schools and playgrounds.
194  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [880 GH/s 0% fee SMPPS] ArsBitcoin mining pool! Come join us! on: October 30, 2011, 04:34:27 PM
Slush'e pool at one time was over 2400GH/s now it is down to 1200GH/s half what it was. Yes not all of that is due to him going merged but it is an added factor.

None of it is. At one time the total hashrate was about 15 Thash, now it's a little over 8.6. Do the math.
195  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Too dangerous to draw more than 1200w on Corsair 1200 PSU? on: October 29, 2011, 06:43:18 PM
The electricity mains in my country has a variance of +/-7%.  It is impossible to get 180-190V

I measured (with good equipment) anything between 150 and 270 V in a timeframe of about 3 weeks. I was curious why my equipment froze at random, UPS-es made strange noise (and one died) and so on. After that I decided not to measure anymore...
196  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Start your own Bitcoin Exchange! on: October 29, 2011, 08:18:28 AM
That code does not even begin to touch the surface of the amount of features included in ours. I haven't looked at it but I am guessing it only includes buy/sell.
We are offering a full exchange, only implementation into a template is required.

Ok, please put up a test install so we can play with it. And yes, in my reply I was referring to buying the rights to the code, not just a installation license. If I decide to do it, I will need for you to make sure it will be possible to open source it without having problems with any 3rd party components you used.

How will he know how much "all your Bitcoins" is?
(Yet another argument in favor of privacy...)

Uh, I don't know, I don't usually mug people Smiley. But I suppose a preemptive punch might be convincing enough.
198  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Let's talk about the dark side on: October 28, 2011, 04:00:03 PM
Mugging for cash will be nearly impossible because bitcoin is secure. Bank robbery will become moot.

Oh really? "Kindly send all your Bitcoins to this address or I'll beat the shit out of you. Thank you for cooperation." And you will pray to have good Internet connectivity and battery on your smartphone. Oh, and while a regular mugging takes a few seconds, let's see how fun will be if the mugger will wait for 1-2 confirmations... Smiley
199  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Start your own Bitcoin Exchange! on: October 28, 2011, 07:14:07 AM
3 questions:

* Can we see a working implementation? A test with fake currency and testnet bitcoins will be ok.

* Will you allow a full code audit under a signed NDA before selling or having a firm offer?

* After sale, will there be any problem open sourcing the code and any additional material (GPL v2 for the code, CC-BY-SA for artwork.)? Please check any 3rd party components' licenses used.
200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Coming Soon! impossible to steal wallets on: October 27, 2011, 05:16:53 PM
Everything can be stolen. EVERYTHING. You can make it harder, but not impossible. Keyloggers (hardware or software), code injection, cold boot attacks, and so on, will beat any encryption.

Here, get this tool: http://www.mcgrewsecurity.com/tools/msramdmp/ and have fun recovering your encrypted wallet private keys from memory.
