  • Staggered start of devices when multiple devices are started with the button on the status line or the "total" display's start button. Should give a smoother start up of (multiple) BFL minirigs.
(quoted from other thread)
Doc, this change is awesome.  Starting up BitMinter for my two mini-rigs is a single click now instead of spending 3-4 minutes manually re-adding FPGAs as they drop offline over and over during the startup.  Thanks!

whitephantom, I assume you are renting the office with utilities included ("full service") - didn't the landlord get suspicious when you had your extra power lines installed?

I have 25 singles and one miniRig spread out across (currently) three offices, and use approximately as much $$$ in included electricity as I pay in rent, but plan to shed one office when I receive my two ASIC-rigs.
Nah, I know the landlady and the office is right across the street from where I work, so that's worth something.  Electricity is normally included, but since I'm using almost as much as I pay her for rent, I agreed to monitor my power usage and to reimburse her for anything over the average of her other tenants.

Why are you rending office space just for the mini rigs?  why not just have them at your house saving you the rent?
No room at the house.  I currently live in a single-wide manufactured home that's worth less than my mini-rigs.  I've been looking to buy a site-built home in the $250-$300k range for over a year, but none have come on the market that I really want, and I'm not in a rush.  When I get a real house, I'll move my mining equipment into it.  Smiley

Thanks, WhitePhantom, for your input and for supporting the pool all this time.

The plan is to first add a worker/personal API with API keys, so that you can use existing third party websites and cellphone apps for supervising workers. Later I will build an email notification system into the BitMinter website.

I was thinking of making the worker API a perk that requires 0.5% donation. Currently I need 6 days without orphan blocks to get enough donations to pay for 1 orphan block. It would definitely be a good thing to get donation levels up a bit.

On the other hand, workers stopping reduces the pool hashrate, which I don't like.

Perhaps the solution is to require a donation for the API but have a primitive email notification on the website that is free. The basic stuff free and the good stuff cheap is the idea.

About monitoring individual devices on the same worker separately, I guess this could be done for any miner by detecting a lower hashrate that persists over time (not just the usual ups and downs caused by randomness). I could perhaps also build something into BitMinter client, I'll look into it.

Currently development has been delayed a bit. The server as you know has been having hardware issues, and I've also been attending the JavaZone conference.

The plan right now, in order of priority:
  • Finish the new server system with full rollntime support (almost done)
  • Worker API (a simple version 1)
  • Variable difficulty
  • Support for backup pools in BitMinter client
Sounds great. Thanks for the update!

Hi Doc,

This pool owns, but may I request a feature that will make it so I don't suck so bad?

Feature request: On the BitMinter website, could you set it up so a worker has the option to send an E-Mail notification if the worker has been active for a certain period of time and then suddenly no shares have been received in the last X minutes?

When a notification gets sent, the system could disable any further notifications for that worker until after the server starts receiving work from it again.  Also, if the E-Mail address for each worker, or at least for notifications in general, could be customizable, that would allow for people to enter an E-Mail address that gets converted by their cell carrier to a text message.

Why I suck: Not your problem, but this feature came to mind because my mini-rigs' host PC apparently rebooted sometime last night.  It must've been RIGHT after I went to sleep.  A feature like this would've gotten my attention to fix it instead of having idle equipment for nearly 11 shifts.

This feature would even be well worth putting in the perks section...I'd definitely increase my donation level to get it.  I missed out on about 3.6 BTC from blocks that others in the pool generated (and probably more until my last 10 shifts are in good shape) and we all missed out on any blocks that I might have generated.

Again, the ability to enable this feature would be well worth placing in the donation perks section; you deserve to get something extra for it.

Related feature request: A feature that would make the notification system even more potent is if we had the option to assign workers in the BitMinter client at the device level rather the instance level.  I'd love to setup a different worker for each of my devices so if one fails, I'll know about it immediately rather than waiting to notice that my hashing power has dropped 5%.

As always, you rock and all your hard work is very appreciated.  Thank you for bringing to all of us the best mining pool in the world.

That's my understanding, but perhaps a bit less.  My two mini-rigs each only use about 1,140W.  It's nice to know that I don't have to go through the same pain again of figuring out how to sufficiently cool the SC upgrades when I get them.  That was much more challenging than I expected with my current equipment.  In hind-sight, I feel stupid for not being prepared before I got them.

If I may ask, how do you cool them?
I rented an office with bars on the window, bought a good portable air conditioner, and used cardboard and whatever else I had lying around to duct the cold air directly at the intake side of the two mini-rigs.  Most of the office is about 80F, but the mini-rigs are nice and cool.  Smiley

I had to have an electrician install three dedicated circuits for the two mini-rigs and the air conditioner (the A/C uses 1200W!).  Otherwise I'd definitely be dealing with tripped circuit breakers and angry neighbors / building manager in the office complex.

The Whynter A/C linked above is actually the second model I decided on because it has an auto-restart feature in the event of a power failure.  I returned the first one (a DeLonghi unit) because it lacked this important feature.  The power went out once and the DeLonghi A/C didn't come back on.  My host PC stayed running on a battery backup and started mining when the power resumed and the mini-rigs came back up, but the DeLonghi A/C stayed off...Not cool!

I'm thinking of buying the BitForce Mini Rig 'SC' ($30,000 one). Wondering if it will be worth it. For some reason, every bitcoin mining calculator says that it will pay for itself within a year, even after the block drops to 25, and if the difficulty jumps 10-fold (unless these things use something like 5,000W of power). Does anyone know if the specs (power, size, anything) for these things is out? My main concern, actually, is whether it will fit through my front door, and whether my home's power lines can handle it  Grin
I don't recall where, but BFL has stated that (paraphrasing) SC generation devices will not use more power than their FPGA counterparts.

So, estimated 1,250W for the Mining Rig 'SC' as opposed to, say, 12,500W?

yea, one of my miners was kicked off, dont know what happened. all i did was look for all ports and it was found and started mining again... Also, one of my miners that is flashed to run slower than another is actually performing better than the faster one, go figure...
I spoke to Sonny about a card in one of my mini-rigs that fluctuates between 200MH/s and 1440MH/s (I've also tried the slower firmware; the issue remains).  He said it's almost definitely a USB issue and to try moving the USB cable for that card to a different port on the USB hub or to even try hooking it directly up to a USB port on the host computer.  When I eventually get around to doing that, I'll post back about what I found.

It seems that the site is down and my miners have stopped. Mining on another pool for tonight, but will be back tomorrow.
Since I have yet to try out any miner other than BitMinter, and my miners were idle, I kind of cheated to mine on a different pool last night.

I opened my hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) and set mint.bitminter.com to resolve to one of the IP addresses for mine2.btcguild.com (107.21.113.86).  The idle BitMinter client immediately asked for new login credentials.

I had signed up at BTC Guild as WhitePhantom, so I just had to change my worker name in the BitMinter client to "1" and the password to "123".

The BitMinter client started mining on BTC Guild, although I was getting about a 10% reject rate for whatever reason.  Still better than being idle, though.  I came back over to BitMinter after about 4 hours and am glad to be back.  Smiley

193  Economy / Marketplace / Re: ["WAIT LIST"] BFL SC Order Dates / Ship Dates on: September 11, 2012, 10:25:27 PM
Why do you think that BFL doesn't give out how many have actually ordered? I was thinking about ordering some more sc mini rigs, but how do we know that they haven't sold 500 TH's worth or more? I wont be buying any more until I get more info on what has been sold and to see what other companies are doing. For all we know, a  sc mini rig may only be worth 1k dollars or so.. Not 30k..

I think its not smart to invest any more into BFL right now. Not until we get a good idea of what the difficulty/BFL sales) is going to be... I'm already gambling, even though my orders were placed in the first month.

Those that are purchasing anything from here on out are REALLY taking a risk....

I bet that the price sc mini rig will be dramatically lower. Whos going to invest 30k when its impossible to ever recoup that much?

Now its a wait and see game..

BTW, as to order  numbers being wrong, I totally believe that the are grossly overestimated. When I was ordering, I actually placed like 4 or 5 different orders until everything was figured out and i made my decision on what to actually pay for...I guarantee that many people made just totally bogus numbers to mess with people and others were undecided and just haven't paid, etc. Only BFL knows the exact orders and they aint talkin'...

Short downtime tomorrow at 16:00 UTC to get a fresh disk in.

Hey Doc,

Thanks for the heads up.  I know backup pool functionality has been on your list for a while, but I was wondering if it would also be possible to add in solo mining as a backup option for if the pool goes down.

With that said, the maximum wattage a USB port can provide is about 2.5 watts.  So there's your expected power draw maximum (or maybe 5 watts if you believe it will utilize 2 USB ports).
I've heard USB 3.0 provides additional power.  The following thread suggests 4.5w, but it's hardly authoritative.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2255324

Does anybody know for sure what kind of power USB 3.0 can provide?

Something installed the extremely annoying "Ask Toolbar" on my computer. I'm wondering if you know anything about that?

i think that comes with java.  when you download anything and install, ALWAYS read what your accepting to install, dont blame bitminter....

yeah SgtMoth  you are correct java does that..    BTW very nice icon

to Maniac479 you can delete the ask tool bar  program.   I have installed it more then once along with other tag ons   also if you install catalyst watch what you agree to.

I do watch what I install. I don't think you can blame me. There's an entire thread called "Trust No One". This very thread's beginnings is all about how this mining software (Bitminter) isn't open source and so a bunch of people didn't install it. I downloaded it anyway, keeping my fingers crossed, and I get a warning before I install it saying that it can screw up my computer. Finally it installs the "Ask" toolbar. I didn't say yes to it installing the "Ask" toolbar- I already have Java installed anyway.

Bitminter is a great, easy to use program that was a relief to use after mucking around with the problematic guiminer disappearing window issue and difficult to use command line programs. Yet it is too intrusive for my taste. I like to be more in control of what's going on. However I finally got guiminer working again and I'm back to deepbit for now. I think guiminer is excellent- just a minor bug with that invisible window issue.
I've used BitMinter on at least 10 different computers since I started mining here about a year ago.  I can safely say that the Ask Toolbar has never mysteriously (or purposely) been installed on any of the computers I've used to mine.

"Kind of" on schedule.... first they said beginning of October, now it is late of.
I don't recall seeing the word "beginning" anywhere, but I could be mistaken.

In security engineering, nonce is an arbitrary number used only once in a cryptographic communication. It is similar in spirit to a nonce word, hence the name. It is often a random or pseudo-random number issued in an authentication protocol to ensure that old communications cannot be reused in replay attacks...

I for one imagine it to be a hyper-cube design with a spinning torus suspended by magnets in the center.
It's powered by a magnetic resonance sender that is place between 1 and 50 feet away.
The usb connection is wireless of course.
