Up to you! I could go either way, but I think that the majority of people will at the least support the GIPPT idea. It does suck to lose coins in the fund Sad, maybe just have the direct pirate exposure of 3-5% very temporary?

183  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Statement about the suspect of recent Bitcoinica hack on: August 03, 2012, 03:31:11 PM
Bitcoinica experienced the third major hack on July 12, 2012. According to Bitcoinica's announcement, 40,000 BTC and $40,000 were stolen.

[…]

Chen Jianhai has agreed to return at least $140,000 and 20,000 BTC under the condition that Bitcoinica LP will not start a police investigation about the hack. I have made it clear to him that I will have zero tolerance on this wrong-doing and if the promised amount is not paid back, I will make his identifiable information available to the police, and possibly public.

Out of curiosity: could you offer him this guarantee? Did you receive this guarantee from Bitcoinica? According to Tihan Seale, none of the board of the directors member was moving or talking, so whose decision was it?

Does this also mean that you do not intend to collaborate with the investigators should a legal action be started, and that you will withhold the identifiable information you possess about Chen Jianhai while you know that he committed the crime and did not return the whole stolen property (especially given today Bitcoin exchange rates) belonging to Bitcoinica creditors? Wouldn't that make you an accessory of the crime?

Quote from: Wikipedia: Accessory (legal term)
To be convicted of an accessory charge, the accused must generally be proved to have had actual knowledge that a crime was going to be, or had been, committed. Furthermore, there must be proof that the accessory knew that his or her action, or inaction, was helping the criminals commit the crime, or evade detection, or escape.

Please remember that day-trading is negative-sum; that is, excluding the exchange, on average people lose.

If bitcoins are considered a currency, I'm not sure this is true, as the system isn't a closed one. Some people will daytrade while others will exchange only in one direction (compared to trading dividendless shares, where the only thing you can do after buying a share is sell it back). Everyone may win, and everyone may lose (except the exchanges, which always win).

188  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How can I anonymously and most conveniently turn Bitcoins into cash, preferrably on: July 30, 2012, 01:49:47 PM
I used localbitcoins.com last week (just after they added escrow and SMS services), and it was really a smooth process. We settled the issue in the street in a few minutes (because it was the first time using localbitcoins for both of us).
189  Economy / Lending / Re: Bryan Micon's List of BTC Ponzi Schemes that should not be listed as "Lending" on: July 30, 2012, 09:51:47 AM
Care to make a 100 BTC wager with me that we will escrow to a person we mutually agree upon that BCST will default by the end of 2013?  I love free BTC!

So, that was it then? It was only a setup so that you can propose a bet that cannot make you lose any money? If someone takes your bet, you only have to also put 100 BTC into pirateat40 fund at the same time: you'll either win because pirateat40 defaults (you'll get the 100 BTC from your opponent + the interests you got from pirateat40 in the meantime) or win because he doesn't default and you can take your principal back and have multiplied it by a large amount even after you lose the bet.

In fact, you're proposing to buy a 200 BTC insurance against pirateat40 default, for a cost of 100 BTC, valid until the end of 2013, at which date you would have made much more than that. Clever.

I must admit that I'm a little disappointed. I thought you were playing the white knight here, while you were just setting up the atmosphere needed to propose this bet.

our bitcoind instance got stuck on a block and did not see any new tx's fixed now and confirmed yours has been processed.

Sorry for the trouble, we shall be implementing a block height check to alert us when this occurs.

Glad to help you debug your site Smiley

How many confirmations are needed? I thought it would be like SatoshiDice, but I got no return for http://blockchain.info/tx-index/13817725/26af262091323a6047dbde0741a95132b92960863b28ac1449b57f1f0c8fcb89 yet.
194  Economy / Lending / Re: Selling Bitcoinica's debt. 35 btc loan. on: July 28, 2012, 07:53:16 PM
yes but the 50% back doubles that, so 32btc, if you thrust me 100% that im keeping my word.

You got your math wrong Smiley If there is a 40% chance that the 40 BTC are sent back, and a 60% chance that they are not (meaning the lender will receive only 15 BTC), then the expected value is 40*0.4+15*0.6=25. So it would be a bad operation to give you 30 BTC for this.

If P is the probability of Bitcoinica money being paid back (between 0, default, and 1, certainty), then people should buy this option for no more than 80*P/(P+1). So, if lenders think that there is a 40% chance that Bitcoinica pays back, they should not pay more than 22.85714286 BTC in any case. And even that would mean a 0% loan for many months in the "mean" case.

With a 10% chance of payback, the maximum that a lender should lend is 7,27272727 BTC.
195  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Dank Bank Deposits - low risk, high interest - 2.5%-3.2% weekly on: July 27, 2012, 10:04:20 PM
Dank Bank Investments

Hello fellow investors, my name is Dank and I'd like to share this opportunity for a low risk, high output investment.

[…]

Your deposits will be invested in numerous ventures including mining hardware, data hosting infrastructure, low interest loans and interest free loans for investors.  I plan on providing more services/products to the BTC community as capital allows for.  Some amount will be invested into an automated content management system to allow quick, flexible investments and withdrawals at any time.

How is that low risk? Do you guarantee the amount placed into your "bank"? What, for example, if the ventures you invest into go bankrupt? Will you reimburse your "clients" with your own money? You admitted having 1500 something (USD?), would that be enough in case those ventures default on you and you are short 2000BTC?
196  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BDK.BND (1%/week) on: July 27, 2012, 07:40:08 PM
Any updates on the dividend payment this week?
Hopefully by the end of the day, possibly not until tomorrow, dividends will be paid. There will be a .5% bonus (so .00015/share instead of usual .0001/share, assuming I counted correctly), and dividends will be paid regularly (in full) on the upcoming Monday (7/30).

I hope for your investors that you mean ".0015/share instead of usual .001/share", that is 10 times more Smiley
197  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Dank Bank Deposits - low risk, high interest - 2.5%-3.2% weekly on: July 27, 2012, 01:26:10 PM
Your deposits will be invested in numerous ventures including mining hardware, data hosting infrastructure, low interest loans and interest free loans for investors.

I don't get it: you'll pay 2.5%-3.2% to borrow money from people (since accepting a deposit is similar to getting a loan), so that you can lend this money at a lower interest rate? How do you plan to be profitable?

I need a loan for 3-6 weeks, I'd be willing to pay 3% weekly interest.

At the same time, you're trying to borrow money at 3% interest rate for yourself, instead of going through your "bank" where you could supposedly get better terms?

I can't understand what you're after.

if your phone is rooted (and I would think that the intersection between people rooting their phones and people using bitcoins is not empty), another application is more likely to be able to access the wallet-protobuf content.

Why is that? To my understanding, apps would still need to expoit security bugs, and the mere existence of them is unrelated to wether you have rooted your phone or not.

Several reasons, the first one being a risk I've seen taken many times already:
  • backups made by applications such as Titanium Backup are unencrypted by default, and will contain the unencrypted private keys without the user realizing the consequences of it — moreover, Titanium Backup lets you send backup in the cloud (Google Drive, DropBox) even if they are not encrypted
  • the user is more likely to accept, by mistake, a "superuser" request made by an application (it's just a popup on the screen, unfortunately many users click on them without thinking about what it says)
  • if the phone is used for development, "adb root" followed by "adb shell" will give you a root shell on the phone, from which you can get the content
200  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Bitcoin Wallet for Android on: July 23, 2012, 11:43:50 AM
If your phone is rooted, you can copy your wallet from /data/data/de.schildbach.wallet/files/wallet-protobuf

If you can't root your phone, I would need to send you a special version that has the ability to copy your wallet to your sdcard. However, this is a quite dangerous feature, as all other apps you got on your phone can steal your wallet/private keys from the sdcard easily.

In any case, it would be a good idea to be able to encrypt the private keys: if your phone is rooted (and I would think that the intersection between people rooting their phones and people using bitcoins is not empty), another application is more likely to be able to access the wallet-protobuf content. And you could only allow backuping a wallet on the sdcard if the private keys are protected by a passphrase.
