This is virtually identical to what EskimoBob wrote on another thread to which evoorhees responded:

Ah, thanks. I knew I couldn't be the only skeptical one..

There is no double top. A double top has peaks separated by weeks to months.

Quote
Second Peak: The advance off the lows usually occurs with low volume and meets resistance from the previous high. Resistance from the previous high should be expected. Even after meeting resistance, only the possibility of a Double Top Reversal exists. The pattern still needs to be confirmed. The time period between peaks can vary from a few weeks to many months, with the norm being 1-3 months. While exact peaks are preferable, there is some leeway. Usually a peak within 3% of the previous high is adequate.

...

While the Double Top Reversal formation may seem straightforward, technicians should take proper steps to avoid deceptive Double Top Reversals. The peaks should be separated by about a month. If the peaks are too close, they could just represent normal resistance rather than a lasting change in the supply/demand picture.

Those peaks are on the 1st and 4th of Feb, which is three days. The pattern being formed is pretty clearly a bullish wedge. Not a guarantee that we'll break $21.5/$22, but an indicator that its likely.

Why does SatoshiDice need to raise capital? Are there any reports of players winning huge payouts that they aren't able to meet with current funds? If not, then there's no need for capital.
SD isn't raising capital.  It is not an issuance of new stock being sold by SD.  It is stock already existing that prior to this week was part of the 90% private holding now being been sold into the open market.  In other words it is the private holder of the shares being sold that is receiving the money raised, not the business.

[tinfoil hat on] The "private holder" could simply Erik Voorhees or an associate, it makes no difference. The question is, why are they selling their shares? Whether the shares already existed or newly "created" is a meaningless technicality. Fact is they are now selling on the open market. AFAICT, this is indistinguishable from raising capital. The question is why?

The other red flag is that it would be so easy for Mr. Voorhees to play his own game thereby creating fraudulent revenues in the blockchain. He would simply lose/win against himself, there is no risk and the only cost would be the block transaction fees. I don't know if this has been suggested elsewhere, but its the very likely that this is happening. Its the rule of thumb that companies starting gaming services (or any social activities, eg dating sites) simulate activity, simulate users, so the service or site doesn't appear dead. Real users see supposed "people" playing satoshidice on blockchain.info, it makes them think about playing too. How much of that is just simulated play with the service's own funds, and how much is real people risking actual coin? I bet that most is just simulated.

From Antal Fekete at 24hgold:

Quote from: Antal Fekete
The Chinese are alive to the fact that escaped the silver bugs in the West, that you can derive a silver income from your pile of silver by covered short selling, even while retaining physical control of your silver hoard.

That's not income, just money you aren't losing. Besides, if silver decides to go up, then you lose your pile being short.

Yes, Bitcoin is on a meteoric rise relative to everything else; even with an instantaneous revaluation of the monetary precious metals, the cryptocurrency will outperform. This is not an issue of contention. However, Bitcoin still has at least a year or two before it is widespread enough to realistically be a direct competitor for contemporary currencies in the sense that it might be used for daily purchases and transactions.

I hope this reference to "contemporary currency" is not a reference to gold/silver. "at least a year or two before they're as widespread as dollars" is not a reason to prefer PMs over bitcoin. So why mention "contemporary currencies", and really, what's more contemporary than bitcoin?

If "might be used in daily contemporary life" is the value judgement, then PMs are completely ruled out, not even possibly an alternative. Maybe in an apocalyptic doomsday scenario, but certainly not a daily contemporary one.
186  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Blockchain.info and BlockExplore.com non-responsive on: February 06, 2013, 03:17:16 PM
Yeah. I might have over reacted. But out of an odd coincidence, my bitcoin-qt program wasn't working (and still isn't, despite a reinstall). It was kind of annoying not being able to check a balance anywhere.

I saw the other threads about trouble synchronizing the blockchain, and for a sec worried that the SHTF. Thank *GOD* its back up.
187  Economy / Speculation / Re: Review of S.DICE on: February 06, 2013, 05:34:08 AM
quite honestly i think sd's biggest problem is that it gets boring quick.
some have stated that sd's whale has already started trying other gambling games.
sd needs more games or players will goto something else that is entertaining.
sitting in front of a bitcoin client sending money to an address and either waiting
or refreshing sd's website got old for me after just a few bets to see what all the
fuss was about. i never went back. I think others will go down the same path.

maybe the evoorhees is seeing this excat trend and this is why hes dumping like a mad fool...

I don't trust their reported revenues. It would be too easy and very cheap to fake users with a bot playing the game (the only cost would be transaction fees, not proportional to bet sizes).

The fact that they're raising money with "stock issues" is another red flag. The whole thing doesn't smell quite right..

189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: my btc blockchain stucks at "~25117 blocks remaining" on: February 06, 2013, 04:13:31 AM
am I the only one whining about this?
No.  But many people that become frustrated with the blockchain synchronization eventually switch to a "lightweight" client such as Electrum or Multibit.  Others just opt for the web hosted wallet solution provided by https://blockchain.info/wallet

blockchain.info is unconnected to the bitcoin network right now (down, basically). I don't use it a lot, but such problems as now are not uncommon for me. Which sucks, because I like blockchain.info a lot.

Let this be a reminder that keyloggers / trojans are far more common than most people suspect. Enable 2-factor, better safe than sorry.

How to use 2-factor auth on mtgox, even without a smartphone

Who would've thought that this wonderful offer would be a scam? I mean its not like there were any warning signs.

Except the giant one with flashing neon lights that said "WARNING! To good to be true!!!"

But other than that, there was definitely no way to know that it was scam. (Besides all the people yelling "scam")

Who were trolls and deserve to be shot!

/sarcasm

told ya so.

194  Economy / Speculation / Re: Yet another analyst :) on: January 01, 2013, 03:56:34 AM
Look what happened after the triangle at $5 broke sideways. For bitcoin, sideways (lack of selling) is an indicator of confidence, and leads to upward movements. The accumulation/distribution indicator (among others) is again confirming this.
195  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: January 01, 2013, 03:44:38 AM
Oops. Well, it is all gambling anyway really. You're betting (bidding) on red or black in the end.

Not if you're betting with enough money to buy a significant proportion of the supply. If you're buying a significant proportion of the total supply (10.6M BTC), then its not a 50/50 red/black bet. You're an informed trader (because you know the buy-in price for that many BTC), and you know that you won't sell less for less than you paid (because you'll buy the rest up for even cheaper if it goes lower).
196  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [3BTC bounty] Authenticate with MtGox API from Google Apps script on: December 23, 2012, 01:32:31 AM
I've put a change up on Google (at the same URL) with the nonce fix. But there is still a problem with computing the HMAC signature. After a bunch of testing and a detour to Stack Overflow I've come to the conclusion that the reason it isn't working is due to a bug in Google Apps Script. As soon as a fix or workaround for this is available, the script should be good to go.

EDIT:
It might have to do with base64 encoded strings which lack padding. Some base64 decode methods work fine with unpadded strings, others don't. And some base64 encode methods don't add padding when they should. Just something to double-check (I had issues with this when using a python script for google 2-factor authentication).

Nevermind. Looks like the problem was determined in the Stack Overflow thread.

Here's the workaround (untested):

Code:
//signature = Utilities.base64Encode(Utilities.computeHmacSignature(Utilities.MacAlgorithm.HMAC_SHA_512, payload, Utilities.base64Decode(apiSecret)));
// replace the above line with below
signature = Utilities.base64Encode(Utilities.computeHmacSignature(Utilities.MacAlgorithm.HMAC_SHA_512, payload, convertBytesToString(Utilities.base64Decode(apiSecret)) ));

function convertBytesToString(bytesArray) {
  var stringFromBytes;
  for(var i=0; i < bytesArray.length; i++ ){
    stringFromBytes += String.fromCharCode(bytesArray[i]);
  }
  return stringFromBytes;
}

I e-mailed Mr Bhamji at taslim.bhamji@pkfcr.co.nz with my claim today, answering his questions 1, 2 and 3.

I only had one deposit using mtgox (provided the mtgox code), so I expect my claim should be easy to verify.

Thanks. This is way more informative than the "No updates" on the bitcoinica.com frontpage.

I'd like Patrick Strateman to explain these motions, and his wishes and expectations of the other parties (Tihan Seale) in order to get customer funds returned.

200  Economy / Speculation / Re: I do believe bitcoin price will boom when we switch from GPU to ASIC mining on: October 20, 2012, 06:14:15 PM
I agree that a bump in difficulty bumps the price. When CPU's dominated mining, price was $0.01-$0.05, in the first trades on mtgox back in August 2010 (correct me if wrong). Shortly thereafter, the first GPU miner was publicly released and difficulty skyrocketed. Price followed suit.

I don't expect there would be such a drastic effect on price this time, even if difficulty increases by a factor of 10x, because the market is much more liquid. But traders do watch difficulty.
