181  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Pre loaded raspberry pi's.. anyone interested?(for armory wallets) on: March 04, 2013, 09:42:44 PM
You may have something to market if there were any way to guarantee that you haven't pre-installed anything malicious.
My intention with this reply is not to be negative about your idea, but to provide feedback and additional ideas to build upon yours.

If I were a noob and looking for a cheap offline solution, I would only buy a "kit" if came without an OS and I had to install it (and Armory) myself.

Maybe you can provide the package of hardware and detailed instructions on how to download install the OS, then install the Armory offline bundle which includes deps etc.

Most people with enough sense to know that they need an offline wallet also have enough sense not to trust someone that they don't know.

Thoughts?
182  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: gosh darnit, making a secure wallet is hard. on: March 04, 2013, 04:37:52 PM
I'm not sure if you're up for it but, I saw a thread a while back that said someone was running Armory (offline) on a Raspberry Pi.

Question about offline transactions... what are the system requirements for a computer that would ONLY hold private keys and sign transactions?
Nothing special. I run it on a Raspberry Pi.
And is there any special setup procedures for such an offline computer?  Do I still have to install the Bitcoin-QT client?
Nope, no blockchain or network connection is necessary.

If you can get the Linux – Offline Bundle for Ubuntu 10.04-32bit going on one of those, it'd be a really cheap and easy solution because all of the dependencies are already installed.
I had an old laptop that worked great. This is an Armory tutorial I'm working on for my friends and family.

I'd like to conduct a test to see if anyone actually reads this page.
Please quote me if you have read this.

I still follow this thread, because it makes me feel good to see people reading my post and hopefully avoiding losing their coins as a result. I don't know if anybody else does though Smiley

It is an important post. An oldie but a goodie. Still rings true to this day.

For me, two questions remain:

How to connect the offline and the online Armory?
Ethernet? Serial? And then some scripting is needed to let them talk to each other..

I think the current recommended method is via USB thumb drive. I just format my thumb drive between uses to ensure that it is clean.
This may be helpful if you need a better solution.

Many times you can disable all that stuff in the BIOS and don't need a special kernel.  If the devices are disabled at the hardware level, it doesn't really matter if the modules are there or not Smiley

I think he's running this off a USB drive and wants to be able to boot untrusted computers (which may have network connectivity).

yes, that is my intent  Wink

USB Stick has a small FAT partition for exchanging the transactions and exporting the watching only wallets,
a boot partition and LVM on a Luks encrypted partition for the OS

I want to be able to boot it on any computer or even a VM and be sure to cut any links to the evil world  Grin

I was just investigating USB auto-run vulnerabilities, and was surprised by the number of attack vectors that Ubuntu has (mainly due to tendency to "auto" do stuff for the convenience of the user, despite exposing attack surface).  I bet the USB viruses could be completely a non-issue if you compiled away all the auto-everything that is normally part of the kernel and/or desktop manager.  The only thing I want the USB key to do when I plug it in is mount automatically and don't do anything else (also disabling file browser icons, which were a source of previous vulnerabilities -- injecting code that exploits an evince bug into the icon of a file, which will automatically get loaded when the file browser pops and up loads the icons to display the files).

I never considered that the answer to remaining attack surface of the USB method could just be a custom-compiled distro...

Of course, I have no experience with that, but I'm sure someone else does Smiley

I am tired of the word crash being used to loosely, saying a bear trend is a crash or a bear day, or week is like saying a Honda Civic is a fast car.

I agree, although, I have seen a few fast Honda Civics. They are usually annoyingly loud though.  Grin
187  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Which strategy is a longer term winner?Buy ASIC or buy Bitcoin now? on: February 28, 2013, 08:20:28 PM
BTC may well not follow Elliot theory because that was based on well founded market relationships that do not apply to BTC. Do not forget BTC is in "another playing field" to conventional economic theory so the old rules may not apply. reg

This is all absolutely true. However, you can not deny that the price of bitcoin has gone up a little too far and too fast.
While we are on a different playing field only matters as much as the players.
Conventional economic theory is based on the players AND the playing field so sat least some of it may still apply.

Wait for the correction - Might have already started, the price just dropped from $34.50 down to $32.10 in the last hour.

I'm finally getting my head wrapped around this entire Bitcoin thing, and along comes Ripple. Hmmmmm . . . More to learn. I can't stop.

Can I trust you, when you say to trust no one?

Makes me not think so
192  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Which strategy is a longer term winner?Buy ASIC or buy Bitcoin now? on: February 28, 2013, 07:06:41 PM
Start with a Bitcoin mining profitability calculator. there's a good one on BitcoinX.com

That doesn't take into account the two variables that no one can predict, Network Growth and Exchange Rate, so there's no use calculating anything with today's numbers.

Of course there are tons of variables that the calculator can not account for. But you have to do some type of calculations. Otherwise you're just making decisions on investments based on complete speculation and your (or somebody else's) gut feeling.

Do the math with the calculator. Do the math with the buy and hold strategy I agree, wait for the correction. Then make your decision.

My point is, DO THE HOMEWORK  before making any investment.

Why do you automatically assume the worst and shout "Oh my God, it's a currency exchange machine and it's unlicensed!"

I was not assuming the worst or shouting anything.
I was asking questions in hopes that someone would provide answers.

Like this
I just want to point out that here in New Hampshire, destination of the Free State Project, devices like this are covered under vending machine laws and not ATM laws as long as they aren't depositing into bank accounts. The fact that this machine is limited in functionality actually gives it an advantage in that it can slip around regulatory hurdles.

@ShireSilver - Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Sure the makers of the BATM dream of selling thousands but I guess they are ahead of time with this. Either they pay bars to be allowed to put the machine there and earn the commissions or the bars are not ready for that yet.

I agree. It would be an incredibly hard sell to any bar/restaurant/retail shop owner.
Also, what about laws governing currency exchanges?
Would the new BATM owner not be regulated by these laws?
Would they have to buy a BATM and a currency exchange license?

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see these things in every other bar or restaurant.
But it seems this project may be starting off on the wrong foot.
198  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The First Bitcoin ATM Has Arrived on: February 26, 2013, 10:07:30 PM
I found this article through BitcoinX the other day.
I was wondering what the incentive for a retailer would be to BUY one of these instead of getting paid to let someone put it in their store.

im shocked at dwolla, does no one outside of btc use it?

I'm pretty sure I've googled bitcoin way more times than anyone would google dwolla no matter how much they love it, there is just so much more to learn and read about bitcoin than dwolla.

Good point. You can learn everything you need to know about Dwolla in a day. Bitcoin, not-so-much.
200  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Anyone use raspberry pi with armory? NT on: February 26, 2013, 08:10:09 PM
Ok just read the whole stuff and that sounds great.
i have an old laptop lying around, ill install that with linux and truecrypt and run the offline armory wallet from there.

so for as far as i understand it, the online wallet only contains the public keys?
and if my online version ever gets whacked i just make a new copy of the offline wallet and im good to go?

sounds good!

Sounds like you're definitely headed in the right direction. THIS is the chronicle of my endeavor to create an offline wallet with Armory.
It's a tutorial that I'm working on for friends and family that are not so techie.

If you decide to read it, feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.
