They should change the pow to something else. Like lyra2z+spread / x32r chained.

I think the hashrate will be cut to 25% of todays rate right after the fork. Should be profitable to mine with the sp-mod on NVIDIA as well.

It's getting harder and harder to boost the performance. More work is needed than before. Alexis did the easy pickings with his legacy opensource code, and gave up when he didn't manage to beat the speed of the sp-mod's.
My modded kernels's have generated millions of dollars worth of cryptos. Who doesn't want faster hashrate or less power usage? You don't want to share the profit with everybody else right?

I am working on a fast polytimos miner. I currently reached 39MHASH with 80% tdp on the 1080ti.

by looking at what other ppl are getting with ccminer 2.2.5 I think this is pretty good and profitable result.

I have added +2.5% in the bitcore algo. The x16r is almost done. I get around 15% bether return than the enemy miner. 24h testing.

With low profit on the 1080ti, reduce the tdp to 50% and keep mining

With a change of the pow it might not be enough to change the firmware, you need to make another chip. (expensive)

Then you will have a new altcoin like ethereum classic, and the old monero will still live on. The only way to do this properly is to hardfork the chain, and force the wallet upgrades.

The monero network hashrate has increased alot with new private pools. To be able to hardfork they need at least 50% of the  mining wallets to upgrade.

The monero team is taking decentrialization and privacy very serious, Ready to D-Dos at the forking day?
