18442  Economy / Economics / Re: What would happen to Bitcoin if the World Echnomy went over to Bitcoins on: July 21, 2011, 05:42:29 AM
skeptics always claim that there won't be enough bitcoins or it won't "scale".  they also say we need a little bit of inflation to keep wages increasing.  BS.

the only ppl that benefit from inflation, mild, medium or large, is the financial industry who has first access to the free money and who controls the printing press.

i say we need a stable currency amount like bitcoin will be in 2030 or whenever its fully issued at 21M.  as the economy becomes more productive (we don't need inflation to innovate) general prices will come down which helps the people.  btc's purchasing power will increase and everything else will be cheaper.  this is a good thing and will occur gradually.  no one special interest group will get preferential treatment.

the economy won't be on steroids like it is now with unlimited credit issuance.  we won't be raping the environment and population growth will be more sustainable.

inflationists are usually financial players who just want to grab what they can now and dump the consequences onto everyone else including our children.

Gavin's interview by Russ Roberts is good.

also Gavin's interview by Omega Tau was also excellent altho more technical.

This early article on bitcoin by The Economist is one of the better ones:

good point.  i'd only send one! Wink

Don't get me wrong... I *LOVE* your idea.  It would be the first 1 oz. Solid Gold 'Bitcoin'...

Cheers,
Kermee

unless RSantana gets into the "clipping" business!
18447  Economy / Goods / Re: new real tangible physical bitcoin coin on: July 21, 2011, 02:22:12 AM
as i said earlier, i would like to be able to send in my Krugerands to be reshaped into Bitcoins and pay a fee to do it.

I'm sure I speak for RSantana when I say if I was in his position and someone wanted to send me several oz. of Gold coins, I would not feel comfortable handling them if issues arise.  We're talking about taking on the responsibility of several thousands of USD...

I'm sure it's not personal.

Cheers,
Kermee

Ok, this is not a bad idea. I can understand not wanting my website on your coin. How about this... what if there was no unique code and the url was very small on the back, OR possibly laser-etched on the coin edge. so you wouldn't even see the url if you were looking directly at the front or back of the coin?

Also, would you want the design of the obverse & reverse on the coin to be the same?

Even if the website was in invisible ink, it would still be there.  That gives the coin less of a "currency" feel and more of a website promotion feel.  Right now you're the only person (I know of) offering cool cheap bitcoin collectors coins.  Take advantage.  Even if they're brass now, you are in a position to corner the market, which after some profiting could lead to silver coins, then gold...

I say you should design a new back and sell them for double the price of the ones on your website.  Then include one of your website coins for free with every purchase of 2 or more.  You'll make more money, your website coins will get to more people, and you could just end up being the exclusive physicial bitcoin supplier once you work out all the kinks in your operation and gather more customers...

I'd definitely buy one made of pure silver without the website listed.  Just sell the brass (gold plated) ones to gather the funding needed to get a batch of silver ones made (then discontinue the brass ones and only use that for your website coins, which you will then give away free with the silver ones).  I'm excited for you.  This is a great opportunity.  I'm just an ideas guy, but would love to partner on this with you somehow if you were interested in building a team for this project.

Or just go ahead and toss me a free coin when you get rich.   Wink

i totally agree with this premise.  i would also like to be able to purchase ones made of gold.

i was one of the earlier buyers of one of these and i love it.  but i just cancelled an order for 4 b/c i realize i really don't like the URL promotion.

make these in silver and gold w/o promoting and you'll make alot more in profit.
18450  Economy / Goods / Re: new real tangible physical bitcoin coin on: July 20, 2011, 09:28:06 PM
I think i'd like the coin better if it didn't have the website stamped onto it.

yeah I feel the same.

It actually serves a cool purpose, but I agree.  I'd buy one if it weren't for that.  Perhaps the coin creator should make a 2nd type of coin without the website branding on it and sell it for more?  That way he could lower the price on his existing coins (they'll be subsidized by the higher priced ones) or give them away for free to promote his site (1 per order of the new coins?).  A non-numbered coin would also be cheaper to have made, so there would be a much higher profit margin, especially considering he could charge a large premium.  Giving 1 of his website branded coins for free with the order of new coins would also get people like myself (and probably the 2 people I quoted) to give his website a try with their free coin.  I'd imagine that would be a great help to getting this project off the ground.

RSantana,

i JUST put my order thru for 4 coins thru Paypal.  could you please leave off your website URL on my order?  everything else can remain the same.

BTCrow,

how would you handle a "bet" btwn 2 parties with a holding period of one year?
18452  Economy / Goods / Re: new real tangible physical bitcoin coin on: July 20, 2011, 08:18:28 PM
I wonder how much people would actually
buy these for if there were 100% pure gold.

It would be MORE then collectible.

i asked him if he would melt down one of my Krugerands into a Bitcoin and he said no.
18453  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proof BTC has a way to go - NOT considered a safe haven on: July 20, 2011, 08:15:47 PM
i see the lack of correlation to the USD market as positive development for BTC.  you name an asset class; stocks, bonds, real estate, commodities, and even gold/silver and they all have a negative correlation to the USD.  and this is to be expected since the more USD's Berspankme prints, the more they flow into speculative assets such as these.  this is called the "all one market" theory.

let us not forget that BTC has had a HUGE run since October and it needs a rest, aka consolidation.  as i pointed out in another thread the technical indicators are strengthening and starting to turn up.  the fact that it is not correlating or participating in this "all one market" theory says to me that it indeed does have the potential to become a major threat to the USD and fiat currencies in general.
18454  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proof BTC has a way to go - NOT considered a safe haven on: July 20, 2011, 01:14:13 PM

While gold and swiss Francs have climbed, just look at BTC. Still hovering around the 13-14 mark. It's definitely not a safe haven currency yet and the lack of movement means I'm putting off using it as one e.g. hedge against the euro.

Lack of movement! EVIL!

Too much movement! EVIL!

Not stable enough to be a currency!  EVIL!
Not volatile enough to be a currency!  EVIL!
Everywhere i see EVIL!

LOL!
18455  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proof BTC has a way to go - NOT considered a safe haven on: July 20, 2011, 01:11:57 PM
To be fair, BTC isn't really an investment used by investors. It's still a toy used by geeks, even our BTC speculators are just geeks with money to play with.

this is just not true.

go and look at all of the OP's personal posts.  he's a troll.

You gonna substantiate that or is this forum literally going to be a witchhunt of "WELL THIS GUY DOESN'T AGREE WITH ME I GUESS HE MUST BE A TROLL" while everyone else stands around the pyre with pitchforks and torches screaming "TROLL TROLL TROLL".

Becuase its this kinda shit that got these very forums taken off the bitcoin website, but whatever.

you know the BTC is starting to go back up?  you might get fired.
