I wish this thread could be locked and made sticky for noobs, but probably it would fail on political correctness front here.
Well thanks for making it un-stickyable!  Wink
1862  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Why do you want to change Bitcoin? on: May 30, 2011, 12:09:43 AM
No, seriously, why?

This is one of the most elegant system I've ever saw. The more I learn about its inner working, the more I'm in awe.
Yet, I see threads like "Bitcoin will not work, we need to do Bitcoin 2.0."

Those aren't little tweaks, like the future transaction fees, but radical overall changes. Why? How much of Bitcoin do you really know? (Hint: if you know it for less than a week, no, you do not know it!)
This thing is complicated! Have you thought of what would happen if a country get disconnected? How the difficulty would manage to lessen the damage? Have you thought about why you should make a backup of your wallet.dat, but not use multiple instances of it? Why someone with 50% of the network hashing power would still be limited in his ability to steal? Why you can receive money even if you're not connected?

This system is truly a masterpiece.

Have you ever looked at the Internet Protocol (IP) and said "Hmmm, this thing need to be fixed."
How about USB? Have you ever noted that the typical USB socket is almost symmetrical (so I will always put my USB drive the wrong way)?

Why do you want to change Bitcoin so bad?
1863  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Restoring a backup perfectly, what happens with my spend coins? on: May 29, 2011, 11:05:20 PM
As matt.collier said, you don't want to use the same wallet at multiple location.

The reason is that Bitcoin will generate random new addresses when you make transactions. So even if you started with the same wallet, they will become different with time. You should really avoid that!

Posted my pledge on TeamLiquid, in the Bitcoin thread.

Almost same characteristics as gold.
In addition:
-You can have backup. (Good luck finding a lost gold coin)
-It's waaaaaay more easy to make a transaction with anyone on the planet

This thing will change the world!  Tongue
1866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to spread Bitcoin? By "forced" donation - Starcraft 2 on: May 28, 2011, 03:00:19 AM
The goal is to make the Bitcoin usage public. If you send by an email, they could simply say "Thank you", without showing Bitcoin to anyone.
1867  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How to spread Bitcoin? By "forced" donation - Starcraft 2 on: May 28, 2011, 02:46:31 AM
I strongly believe Bitcoin will enter society layer by layer, the firsts being the crypto-maniacs, the geeks, the gamers... to the lasts, probably being the ol' farmer and the kind grandma (who always ask you-know-who when she has a computer problem).

I might be wrong, but I also have the impression most Bitcoiner are aware of the difference between fiat currency and gold/silver. This, my friends, was the easy layer. If you ever tried to explain this difference, you know most individuals simply don't care. Chances are that they won't care more for Bitcoin.

So, how can we show Bitcoin to the world, one layer at the time?

I believe the next layer is the gamers.
They use computers everyday and know enough to cope with all this techy stuff. I know some have been lured to the mining side, but clearly they're a minority. Some forums even have been deleting Bitcoin threads.

One sweet spot would be the Starcraft 2 community. E-sports really are on the rise, with hundreds of thousands in prize pools (for example, over 100K for the NASL). Champions are streaming their practice games and regularly have 10k viewers.

Now to the point: I propose we pledge to give some donations to game casters, with a certain condition; they must place a Bitcoin donation button on their sites. It's THIS button we would use (meaning it should work).
"We want to give you *many BTC*, but you need to accept Bitcoin."

Full disclosure: I don't play Starcraft 2, but I watch the casted games. Those casters are amazingly fun.

I WILL donate 10 BTC to Day9 if he puts a Bitcoin donate button on his stream or blip.tv page by the end of July.

Wait, what happens when the 100 blocks is reached? The network is split for good?

Another perfect one!

Kept his word even when BTC went up 10%.
1871  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Official Bitcoin Unicode Character? on: May 25, 2011, 02:03:03 AM
I support Ƀ.

β is already used enough in math. (We should avoid any Greek letter in fact)

Ƀ isn't seen so often and consequently an association between the symbol and Bitcoin can easily be made.

Oups, I did it again!

Thanks for the transaction!
1873  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will bitcoin actually take off? Is it possible really? on: May 24, 2011, 03:25:48 AM
You could use paypal as a protection (if they ever accept BTC).
1874  Economy / Economics / Re: Demurrage, transaction fees, storage fees & comparison to commodity money. on: May 24, 2011, 02:50:59 AM
Ultimately you are paying for the security of the present transaction.

Even if a million BTC were to sleep in an account for a hundred years, it is only when they are spent that the security is important (and paid for).

If I keep 10 BTC for 10 years, but one day before I spend them the blockchain is tempered with (in a way as to render the network worthless), I don't see why I should have paid the miners all this time.

I repeat: the security is only useful when you use your BTC. I would even add that the current transaction need the transaction history to validate itself.
Everything in-between transactions is irrelevant.

Please don't destroy a key characteristic of Bitcoin (and ANY money); for now it is durable - as durable as the network. Doing so would undermine the entire project.
1875  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / The longest blockchain is the truth? on: May 23, 2011, 06:50:30 PM
If I understand correctly, when the client is faced with two different blockchain, the longest will prevail.

If it's the case, wouldn't be possible to generate a longer blockchain (starting from scratch, or almost) by simply using an easier difficulty than the network?

The new blockchain would then be seen as the truth and the real one simply discarded.

I must be missing something. Could someone please enlighten me?

Did it again. Simple and fast.

Will be back  Tongue
