1861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another Bitcoin purchase for the dip. on: December 18, 2022, 07:58:16 PM
Congrats on buying the dip, op! I think it's totally fine to invest gradually rather than do a major this all at once, as this way you can choose convenient moments when you have money you can spare on investment and see how the market is doing. I hope you're storing your coins safely in a non-custodial wallet and are prepared to hodl for perhaps a year or two if not more for decent profit.
1862  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 9 yrs ago today a legendary word was born !! on: December 18, 2022, 07:41:01 PM
I don't know if it was initially used on purpose or not, as writing hodling accidentally is also quite likely (I often do it by accident and then decide to just keep it there). In any case, it became a word of its own with its special context and meaning. Thanks, op, for noticing that it's the anniversary. Hodling is still a good strategy, especially if a person knows that they are a bad trader. And the author of the original 2013 post is right that if the price is low, it's a good time to buy and hodl. As we're still in the times of the bear market, perhaps this reminder will motivate some to grab this opportunity.
1863  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's FIFA World Cup 22 Prediction Pool Discussion thread on: December 18, 2022, 07:03:49 PM
Hey guys, congrats to the winner and winners of the prediction competition, as well as to supporters of Argentina. I've just watched the finals together with friends, and what a game it was! First half it looked like France wasn't even trying, but then there was a small period of time with France scoring twice in a matter of minutes! My prediction was 3-2 Argentina, and it came quite close to being true until France managed to get to a draw, and then penalties started. I'm happy for Argentina, just their third win of the World Cup. They really deserved it, Messi's still got it, but France played very decently, too.
1864  Economy / Economics / Re: FTX CEO says company engaged in 'old fashioned embezzlement' under SBF on: December 17, 2022, 04:57:46 PM
If there was embezzlement, I hope relevant people (including but not limited to Sam Bankman-Fried) will be held responsible. For me, though, the most important thing is for victims to get their money back, at least most of it if getting all of it is impossible. The second priority is proper legislation that would make such sudden bankruptcies impossible (in case it wasn't a direct violation of already existing legislation, of course, and unfortunately I suspect it might not have been): oversight of the work of exchanges that would allow monitoring how things are going with their funds, preferably in some form of public accountability.
1865  Economy / Economics / Re: A breakthrough in thermonuclear fusion technology! End of the era of hydrocarbon on: December 17, 2022, 04:35:31 PM
Nuclear energy in general is the best midterm solution to environmental issues for many countries. If a country can meet its need for electricity by using solar/wind/geothermal sources, that's fantastic, but in many climates it's not possible. Nuclear energy is more stable, it can help increase energy production, and it's still much better than burning coal or using gas.
Nuclear fusion is supposed to be much more efficient, and it would be great to finally crack it. Hopefully, this initial experiment will lead to further research and practical implementations. It should take years to ensure it's safe, but I think we'll get there.
1866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A day with an ally. on: December 17, 2022, 03:53:35 PM
I'm happy you met an old friend and discussed Bitcoin together, but it seems to me from the text that your friend is in a rough financial situation. When that's the case, investing money into something, even in Bitcoin, poses a big risk and breaks the rule of not investing what one can't afford to lose. $50 isn't a big sum, so that's probably alright, but I think it's important to repeat the main rules and risks to people who are new to cryptos, especially if they are in a fragile situation and are desperate. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, maybe it's just the original post not representing the full picture.

1868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All Hal Finney's Tweets on: December 17, 2022, 12:58:06 PM
So far, it seems some people are doubting that it was indeed Finney's widow, but the matter of whether the account was compromised or not is probably irrelevant when it comes to deletions of accounts where nobody logged in for years and didn't tweet anything. Hopefully, this simple act will save Finney's account. I also hope that Musk will take into account the sensitive issue of memory about dead people and of preserving history on online platforms for future generations. Deleting it just doesn't seem right to me, but a lot of what Musk does doesn't seem right to me.
1869  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 99% of People Will Lose Crypto in Self Custody on: December 16, 2022, 07:36:54 PM
I've never had a problem using a non-custodial wallet and actually feel more anxious using a centralized platform like an exchange because they have way more features than a wallet, as well as can have requirements like KYC, hidden fees, etc.. And I really don't think I'm unique enough to belong in the 1% who can figure things out and not lose access to my money. I have more faith in humanity. Is it just Binance CEO's opinion or is there any research to support the idea that, statistically, the chance of losing access to one's coins is this high and over which period of time?
1870  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Education programs should cover Bitcoin and Blockchain technology. on: December 16, 2022, 07:26:24 PM
In some countries, it's already a part of education (in France, for example). In many, it probably depends on a particular teacher and whether a teacher would want to introduce some topics, as well as on the school. But I agree it's not widespread, but something that should be widespread. Adding crypto courses at the level of university isn't enough because many people don't go to universities, and the courses are usually aimed only at students who study IT or something related. Adding at least some topics into Economics and/or IT school courses could boost the knowledge about Bitcoin of the younger populations. I don't think it should be advertised, as we're talking about minors here. I think it should be talked about, focusing on the facts about different ways money can work and on Bitcoin as a relatively new form of money with its features.
1871  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is that guy still rummaging the dump? on: December 16, 2022, 06:42:38 PM
Landfills are just generally a bad thing, something humans must be swiftly moving away from. They are harmful to the environment themselves, but is there research on additional damage that digging into them can do, on which scale and why? It seems the city council denied the request of digging there to look for the drive, despite a commitment to donate $70 million in case of successful recovery (referring here to the story which Dave1 referred to), but I can't find information on how digging in one area of a landfill can be harmful to the environment on its own.
1872  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What's behind Donald Trump's issuing NFTs ? on: December 16, 2022, 06:22:06 PM
I just wanted to make a thread on this matter.
Just yesterday, Donald Trump announced the launch of his own NFT cards, $99 each. They could be bought with Ethereum, not just fiat. There's a very weird video of Trump presenting this product, being so full of himself but also looking kind of like an old version of Homelander from the Boys, yet somehow not realizing that it isn't a good thing. According to the website, the cards are already sold out. In terms of sources, there's the official website but also legit media articles like this one.
Given Trump's problematic reputation, this might not be good publicity for NFTs and Ethereum, so I'm kind of happy Bitcoin was no part of this campaign.

1874  Economy / Economics / Re: Forget a return to office: We’re living in the age of side hustles on: December 15, 2022, 05:30:03 PM
To me, the article seems to correctly grasp the nature of the shifting market. Indeed, people often have jobs but do other things on the side or mix different freelance jobs t earn a living. While it can mean that there isn't enough money people are getting now from one job, which is something that must be fixed, it also gives more flexibility and less dependence on a particular employer, and thus more power. There are, of course, other sides to it, such as the precarious state of not having a long-term contract, not being sure you'll get as much income next month as this month, and potential issues if you need to get a loan or want a mortgage.
Crypto freelance can be a part of it and something to become more relevant with the shifting market, but I don't think it takes a significant share of all freelance jobs for now. It is something that can experience growth, perhaps.
1875  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: SBF, arrested! on: December 15, 2022, 04:59:58 PM
To be honest, I am pleasantly surprised. I know that the system of Justice is alright in the US, but it still has its major downsides (like the Trump-appointed conservative juries of the highest court), and I thought a capitalist state like the USA would protect its riches, especially if they did their paperwork in time. Apparently, I was wrong, and there is some justice after all. I don't care if he gets prison time (and I don't generally believe in prisons as a proper way of making society better), but I really hope that the victims will be reimbursed upon liquidation of FTX assets and, if that isn't enough, from Bankman's own big pocket.
1876  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is the smart choice not the entire crypto industry on: December 15, 2022, 04:40:10 PM
I agree with the op that while Bitcoin is relatively low-risk and has high prospects, it's dangerous to use the word 'crypto' instead of Bitcoin when talking about long-term investments or mass adoption because the vast majority of altcoins are very risky and have a low chance of becoming anything more than failed projects or Bitcoin clones. Hodling Bitcoin and perhaps Ethereum is one thing, but hodling some random altcoins is another, and there's no reason for them to recover when the bull market comes or to become more widely used in the future.
1877  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We No Longer Pay People Directly on: December 15, 2022, 04:03:00 PM

The less we use cash, the more we pay people through a corporation. The last remaining use of cash and direct payments is Tipping.
Everything else we must pay through a corporation. We cannot pay another human unless there is a corporation involved. As cash disappears this becomes a final fact -- a corporation involved in every financial transaction you pursue. In each transaction, the corporation is taking their percentage but also controls and monitors your transaction.

Bitcoin

I like the convenience of high level of digitalization. It's easy to use Google Pay or a PayPass chip on a debit card, not needing to think about the country you're in and having a proper currency with you when you are travelling. Fiat can have its own problems when ATM withdrawals are limited or there simply aren't enough ATMs to meet the demand, and if you're going to another country, exchanges to get fiat can collect ridiculous fees, as well as require an ID after some threshold. That being said, sometimes the cashless motive goes way too far. For example, in London, you can pay a bit more than 2 pounds for underground if you pay contactless, but a whopping 6 pounds and something if you pay with cash! I'm surprised it's even legal, given that cash represents the same currency, so how can the price differ so much!
Bitcoin is a great solution, one which doesn't require intermediaries. But that's not the case in practice, when acceptance of Bitcoin is still very low in many places, so you can't just use Bitcoin directly.
1878  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Physical Bitcoin Shop in Port Harcourt (Nigeria) on: December 15, 2022, 03:41:45 PM
It's a lovely story, happy birthday! I'm happy you've found a place and got some BTC. I agree with Findingnemo that Electrum wallet sounds like a good choice for storing the funds. So far, they are on a crypto exchange, right? While Binance is highly reputable, no exchange is invincible: they can still go bankrupt at some point, get hacked, suffer from a big inside job leak, require even more identification documents, etc. So, withdrawing from an exchange and moving the funds to a non-custodial wallet is desirable.
1879  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A class about Bitcoin is being taught at the university.I am an teacher on there on: December 14, 2022, 07:51:09 PM
Congrats, op, on getting a job as a university lecturer. It's wonderful that your suggestion was taken into account, and there's now an optional course on Bitcoin for students now. The turnout is also great, which I hope will motivate the university to make the course a proper part of the curriculum (either as a course to take for credit or as topics integrated into a normative course students take).
I don't normally doubt what people are saying about themselves and the educational work they do about Bitcoin, but I must say that the concerns raised by others sound pretty valid to me.
1880  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can Elon musk listen to bitcoiners not to delete Hal Finney's account on: December 14, 2022, 07:30:43 PM
I completely support the plea not to delete Finney's account, as it is of historical significance. The first tweet about Bitcoin, as well as Hal's legacy, are important and should stay. If Elon doesn't want deceased to have their accounts kept on the platform, he should come up with a sensible alternative, something like Twitter archives, as this matter goes beyond Hal Finney. Many people die, and some leave a legacy that should not be forgotten. Twitter deleting history, not preserving the past, is an unfair thing to do.
