1881  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What's in the game, after all? on: February 03, 2020, 02:12:47 PM
I have already provided a valid "walkthrough" for dice by using a tailored version of the martingale strategy. Indeed, it won't help you win insane profits, but something is still better than nothing. For fuck's sake, it fits in quite well with the definition of a walkthrough as a guide assisting players in some game
I am a new wanderer to these parts and "A walkthrough of the martingale strategy" is something I'd be interested in. It'll be great if you can share a link.

If this discussion is comparing PC/ Console gaming experience and the movie experience with the Gambling experience, isn't that a losing bet? Purely for entertainment, gaming is way better. Gambling games have a much lower outcome time though. Like, I could be stuck playing DoTA for over 40 minutes while I could lose/ win a lot of bets in that time. Though every kill in the game is also an outcome in itself yet the effort that goes in setting up a gank and rolling a dice is incomparable.
My opinion on the original question is that it is hard for me to understand the charm of purely luck based gambling. Betting on the other hand seems slightly more interesting because there you do have a certain set of information to use for deciding what you will bet on.
1882  Economy / Reputation / Re: ~Vispilio: A Cryptic Command to my Janissaries of the General Forum!! on: February 03, 2020, 05:09:51 AM
I am sincerely puzzled.  Would somebody please help me figure out just what Vispilio was trollishly ranting about in my self-moderated Nietzsche thread, which explicitly bans “Vispilio and his cronies” as a local rule?
The evidence here is sufficient for anyone to know what exactly Visipilo is thinking. On being called out for his unworthy behavior in relation to Yobit, the defense they came up with is "The Chipmixer Gang (??) wants to keep our guy away from getting in because he is a great prospect". Self-declaratioins of being the "most well known" local member are only digging the hole deeper. Someone who thinks that everything in the forum revolves or should revolve around Chipmixer and financial motivations would pretty much have been explicitly unsuitable for DT earlier.

This is a final attempt to counter you in your own writing style, of which, i think he made a commendable effort. It only ends up looking like a perfect example of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery.
1883  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: February 02, 2020, 02:18:26 PM
-snip

That's an overkill for a simple Lightning Network node. By default, one have 24 hours to bring back one's node online before forced channel closure (old channel state might be broadcast to the network).
I followed the discussion for a few pages but couldn't find the question that came to my mind on seeing this. My ISP has these issues where the connection could be gone for more than 24 hrs. (In reality, the ADSL lines are lying exposed on the ground and the hand-twisted connection frequently gets sheared by passing cars, marauding kids and I'm not even joking). If i run an LN node and open a channel by putting some Sats and making a funding transaction, does the onus now lies on me to ensure that it is always online (or online atleast once in 24 hours)??

If for some reason, i happen to just leave house or the neighbor's kid decide to pull on the lines, would that mean forced channel closure leading me to pay on-chain fee unnecessarily?
Sorry if i have not googled for this. I'd like to read more about the challenges and roadmap of LN.
1884  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ln_strike- a good sign for the Layer 2 Bitcoin Network. From fiat to btc in a sec on: February 02, 2020, 01:54:32 PM

So Zap - a popular Lightning Network wallet platform came with announcement of their project called Strike.
What you do with Strike is you use your Credit or Debit cards (fiat) to send BTC in the Lightning network in matter of seconds.
This is another good step ahead for adopting BTC for day life off-chain payments.

Quote
Today, we are announcing Strike, an application that allows you to make Lightning payments with your bank account or debit card. Using Strike requires the following: a debit card or bank account. That’s it; no wallet, no node, no channels, no swaps, no liquidity management, no anything. It’s an application, sitting on top of our infrastructure piece Olympus, designed to usher in an era of Bitcoin that we believe has the best shot of achieving our mainstream hopes and desires.
From the problem that Jack solved using this app, it proves useful from a pro-BTC merchant's point of view than the customer's. A pro-BTC customer would probably already have an LN wallet with funds on it to make an LN payment. The app becomes useful if the merchant has an LN setup like his parent's shop while the customers don't care how they pay. The shop asks them to install the app and then use it for payments.

Why would a customer prefer the app over making a Debit card payment on a swipe machine/ PoS? Apps like Strike simplify the mechanics to use BTC provided the motivation to use is already there.
1885  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ETH-based descentralized casinos on: February 01, 2020, 01:54:32 PM
What am i missing here? What exactly is "Decentralized" gambling. You are already using an anonymous, permissionless currency. What can a casino want as a service provider that decentralization helps?
Zero benefit to the gambler as well. Also, by very definition, a casino has to be a centralized entity. So this is a good idea to discuss but no, not going to happen.
1886  Other / Meta / Re: The Rules of Spam, Bitcointalk.org Edition on: February 01, 2020, 05:54:33 AM
I am glad that you are back for whatever short period it is going to be. It is good to have someone with your depth of knowledge who has the best interest of forum and bitcoin in mind. Your posts take effort and time to wrap our collective heads around but make the time spent here much more worthwhile. This topic was started in 2018 and gives so much clarity to all the recent drama around Yobit, TS and the arguments with Suchmoon about how to define trust here at the forum.

I would like to comment on a few of the rules and maybe the discussion can lead to clarity for me and others.

Rule #1: Spammers lie.

  • Russel’s Admonition: Always assume that there is a measurable chance that the entity you are dealing with is a spammer.
  • Lexical Contradiction: Spammers will redefine any term in order to disguise their abuse of Internet resources.
    • Sharp’s Corollary: Spammers attempt to re-define “spamming” as that which they do not do.
    • Finnell’s Corollary: Spammers define “remove” as “validate.”
    • Nullian Corollary: Spammers redefine “crypto” as “free money grab”, “opportunity for the poor” as “destoying the socioeconomic utility of mass communications”, and “dev team” as “spammers with an ETH token or unmaintained Bitcoin clone, a webpage, and the all-important ANN thread”.
This is a bit unclear to me. So I'll comment on what i understand from it.
Spammers define "remove" as "validate":
When the honest user finds something spammy and wants it to be "removed", the spammer takes it as an opportunity to say things like "Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater, Lets validate this in a way that gives it an appearance of being okay"
Doesn't this pretty much sum up what happened with Yobit changing their X10 Signature and Yahoo enabling that instead of taking a different stance or letting them go?

The Nullian corollary:
Spammers redfine crytpo as ==> Free money for everyone (Airdrops, ICOs)
==>Opportunity for poor (Venezuela, Save the babies)
I am lost at "destroying the socioeconomic utility of mass communication". Where does this fit in?
I too felt at one point that crypto really could enable an alternate economy with easier access to capital and for everybody..Yet, the "Help the poor" argument was exploited so shrewdly by Roger and his ilk that it is impossible to accept it as sincere. I think that "Bitcoin is for everybody" is the most convincing pro-maximalism argument I have read.

Quote
There is only one Bitcoin.  It’s for everybody.  And it is even beneficial to your interests if Bitcoin also used by people you don’t care about—or by people whom you dislike—or even by people whom you hate.  Indeed, it is beneficial to you if your enemy is invested in Bitcoin:  That means he cannot attack your financial freedom without also attacking his own money....

...Bitcoin may not make some impossible Utopian “world peace”; but at least, it will make everybody agree on something:  Bitcoin!

This is something I feel needs to be dealt better. I raised the issue back here and you said:

I think that’s an unfair mischaracterization.

I am probably one of the most “politically incorrect” people on this forum.  If somebody acts like a dumb pajeet, I will call him one; and it is not for the sake of political correctness or “liberal” virtue-signalling...
Granted that people call each other names when they are pissed. In a global interent community, it is much easier to play the victim with the racism card. When we use racial generalizations, there are enough instances to see that such divisions only strengthens the "democratic spammers". As a temporary measure, I propose that we should try using only "non-race specific" slurs while tackling spammers.. Roll Eyes

(Personally i feel if you are not a spammer looking only for money drips out here, you wouldn't much care about racial slurs. Its only yesterday i learnt that "Pajeet" is very India specific...LOL..)

Nullian Law of Social Opportunity Cost of Spam:  In addition to its direct damage to the usefulness of communications, spam has the hidden cost of absorbing the productive time of spamfighters.

This is a logical corollary to Rule #0, but of sufficient import to be its own top-level rule.

My instant motivation for pulling up the venerable nanae Rules of Spam was the moment when I realized I’d spent most of my past day’s forum time quietly fighting spam behind the scenes.  This led me to reflect somberly (and not for the first time) on people who do far more to fight spam than I do.  What positive contributions would they make, what productive work would they do, what creativity would they work, if their time and energy were not spent keeping the forum usable for everybody?

Since the dawn of time, such has been the unending dilemma of all those who wage war on the ugly:  Create beauty amidst a cesspool, or fight for an environment wherein beautiful things may exist?

“I want more and more to perceive the necessary characters in things as the beautiful:  —I shall thus be one of those who beautify things.  Amor fati: let that henceforth be my love!  I do not want to wage war with the ugly.  I do not want to accuse, I do not want even to accuse the accusers.  Lookingaside, let that be my sole negation!  And all in all, to sum up: I wish to be at any time hereafter only a yea-sayer!”Friedrich Nietzsche

Pretty much self-explanatory and quotable.
1887  Economy / Reputation / Re: yahoo62278 and Yobit on: January 31, 2020, 07:53:30 AM
When I seen the new sigs and seen a good amounts of comments regarding them, I contacted Yobit and told them changes needed to be made.

They changed the sigs (which is when I started wearing the signature code) and everything looked to be fine. I would not have been ok with the investbox staying

So.. They tried pulling a quick one on the forum to advertise what is generally accepted to be a "scam".. At the very least in my opinion a predatory investment scheme to scoop up the money from idiots..

This was obviously a big problem as even you yourself contacted them to change it.. It sparked outrage in the community did it not?

So they change it to something pointing less directly to their "scam", you put it on and wear it proudly, and then "everything looked to be fine"..

All was right in the world once again.. Yobit was no longer a disrespectful spam financier or scammer/predator as soon as they changed their 100% unacceptable signature..
Everything is fine..

I mean.. You make so much money here, and are such a respected member here, one would think that you may have some loyalty and devotion to this forum, but then you personally advertise for a company that does all it can to pay for as much spam as they can get away with here to advertise as close to their best scam as they can get away with,
The logic is quite simple. Yahoo has been an active, successful manager. There was a time when he was the only one managing campaigns and his judgement has almost always been based on the commercial aspect. Keeping track of money is almost always easier than maintaining a stand when it comes to things like honor, loyalty, work-ethic etc etc which Lauda, Nullius etc are trying to shove down everyone's throats...

Yahoo's claims about becoming the Yobit manager so the campaign got cleaned up may hold some weight but he was not doing it for free. I wore the signature myself initially as it was pay per post. I hadn't worn a signature for a long time as i did not fulfill the background needed mostly. I removed it a week or two later. When the X10 thing happened, that is when Yahoo could have taken a stand instead of enabling/ managing them. It comes down to the question that should the seemingly well known/ respected members be held to a higher standard?

Personally i think Yahoo is a decent manager and he spends a lot of time managing these campaigns and it maybe a big operation for him. It'd be all fine if he was treated just that way. A good money manager. All this pretense about him being a respectable member and having done a lot for the forum should be dropped. (amplified by all the people fawning over him to get into his campaigns, which is something he should probably try to discourage). This is just another one of the instances when people doing business at the forum have shown that it is money that matters to them over the ambiguities of taking a stand or being the bigger person. An instance i myself know about is when he almost tried to wrangle an upstart by catching a "bug" he already knew about.

Nobody is above the lure of money/ power. Everybody has a price. It just depends on the level you are at. DT was probably meant to be a sort of group of conscience-keepers but with the current system it is always going to be about letting people make their own decisions and let it play out. I would prefer if it maintained some semblance of ethics and was free from the effects of commerce. We can dream, right?
1888  Economy / Reputation / Re: Trust System Abuse By Nullius on: January 30, 2020, 04:49:38 PM
This has all become so absurd. The whole trust picture has become debatable because in the last iteration , Theymos truly "democratized" trust. (probably after changing his own opinion about how "decentralization" is not the answer to everything). That was when we witnessed the mass uprising with all the "oppressed" people red-tagged by Lauda et al coming to realize their strength in numbers.

Suchmoon has clearly stated that he will give trust ratings based only on trade history. Nullius wants trust system to imply trustworthiness in terms of overall judgement and principled behavior. If humans were perfect and we all had the same levels of self-respect, everybody on the forum would be making independent judgement on trust (Whether trade based or opinion based) and it would all come down to a stable equilibrium sans any drama.

What happens in reality is that the world gets divided into camps. There are the ones sticking to their self-held principles/ judgement trying to be the "lonely wolves". They get targeted by the "swarm" of people whose opinions are generally determined and swayed by their common interests on the forum (bounties/ referrals/ earning). Theymos once said that he considers it one of the success stories for the forum that it enables people in developing countries to make money.

The fault with this "principled" side lies that they are too clever for their own good. They are passionate about their quest to clean up and target the scammers. They find people abusing the system and all that righteous fury spills out as colorful, sarcastic language that cuts deep. "Pajeet, Third world bottom feeder, all your cousins and uncles" are the oft-repeated generalizations. When you use that language you risk biasing each and everyone of those people against you.

The swarm on the other hand consists mainly of the followers and a few leaders. These leaders generally have a separate sense of "sharing the goods" which doesn't always matches with the work-ethics of our lonely wolves. The drama in Turkish section is a typical example of this where people actually considered it natural to include their family and exchange trust ratings/ merits to "progress" in the forum. This seems childish to the lone wolf at best and unethical at worst. To the swarm, its just how things work. Through a system of references and propping up one another. The problem with the swarm is when its leaders try to use "democracy" to settle scores. They easily utilize the pain caused by the aforementioned sarcastic insults to target these people.

This has been going on for a long time and I suppose nullius missed a lot of that drama. The trust system has to kindda evolve into a state where the Swarm leaders and lonely wolves can agree to a certain set of ethics. Suchmoon has been through most of that drama and has found refuge into simplifying the system. "Trust is only for trade, easy-peasy". It can only be good that both him and Nullius are being forced into a discussion so we can once again have something more than simple commercial interests drive this forum.

as they mysteriously appeared after very long periods of inactivity with a change in language, demeanor, and suddenly hold all the same opinions of the people listed above.
Nullius may have been inactive for sometime but I have read enough on the forum to know that this allegation of "change in language, demeanor" is pretty juvenile. Nothing has changed with Nullius. He is still the same old difficult and fun to read person that he always was.

PS: I forgot to add, "Win Big with the Lucky Cat"...LOL..Smiley
1889  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [AMA] The Life of a Professional Gambler on: January 30, 2020, 03:07:13 PM
Your second question is a bit unspecific, so I am having trouble to understand what you would like to hear. I already wrote a lot about intentions, how it all started, about the fun/money relation and all those things. Maybe scroll a bit through this thread and see if that answers your question. If not, just come back Wink

This thread has a lot of anecdotal information and you make many references to the world of gambling that a new person would find not identify. I get that someone will need to actually be immersed into it to get all the references. My question was aimed at getting a bird's eye view of what the "Gambling world" is like. How would you describe it to someone in a way that they can decide if it is for them or not, the triumphs and the tribulations?

I understand that it is a pretty open ended question and someone could probably write a book on that. Your experience is mostly in sports betting and you are doing a great job in eliciting interest. I think the line that best summarizes it for a newbie to the world are in just your last reply:

In betting you will always have to compete with the best of the best. There are no markets for newbies or not so skilled people. You compete with all the sharks right from the get go.
1890  Economy / Economics / Re: $900K worth of counterfeit U.S. currency seized on: January 30, 2020, 02:56:51 PM
Producing counterfeit currency is almost always state sponsored financial terrorism. The theories to explain this are far from conspiracy theories. This 900K is probably just a drop compared to the whole operation. India has been at the receiving end of Fake currency published in Pakistan for several years now. There are regular seizures and this was one of the reason that a large tranche of high value notes were removed from circulation in India.

While most people consider that exercise a failure, Govt has maintained that it lead to a drop in the Kashmir unrest because the financing got stopped as the old currency notes were left invalid. Then there is the long term effect of causing inflation but that would mean significant larger amounts.

These smaller amounts are generally meant to finance the small operations in terror related activities. It is understandable between India and Pakistan but why would China do something like that to the USA is a little difficult to understand. Undermining US position as the superpower by financing covert operations?
1891  Local / Off-Topic (India) / Re: Ecommerce in India: Amazon vs Walmart on: January 30, 2020, 02:22:19 PM
What surprised me was when you mentioned TATA launched their CLIQ service in 2016 but you only heard about them last year.

Tata Cliq sucks. I sent a friend of a mine a bit of women ethnics from the website as her birthday gift. The bloody delivery guy never delivered the package and these people showed me a wrong signature as the proof of receipt and washed their hands off of it.
Literally stole my money lol..I sent them a lot of colorful mails exhorting them about the great Tatas and how they had dragged their names into dirt!!

Heisenberg already gave a reply which leaves little more to add except my opinion on Flipkart vs Amazon. Flipkart wouldn't have survived Amazon's amazing customer service and Jeff Bezos' ferocity. They do have some hope now that they have been taken over by Amazon's fellow western friends. What doesn't change is the fact that Indians per se will continue to be one of the biggest markets for them. There was a time when India had to be conquered by the English so they could sell good made by us to ourselves. Now they only need to buy companies.
1892  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin changed my life! on: January 30, 2020, 05:19:32 AM
Before earning in crypto, i do everything to get money of course only legal way, i still remember when i do "fruit salad seller" in indonesia called "rujak buah" , my family especially my sister always underestimate me, because i can't buy my own ponsel, i use my sister phone nokia N73 ( it was very fcking cool in his era ) then i do job as admin in company, and start learning cryptocurrency.

crypto change my life, i get extra income, i build my own mining rig too with 6000 watt electric and earning arround $1000 permonth, but now i'm broke, i lost arround $10000 in mining Sad  , all my vga death and no price.

That is also some exciting story in itself. A lot of people over invested during the mining boom with GPU mining. 6000 Watt would mean almost 40 GPUs. That in itself might be a >10K USD investment including the cost of processor, MB etc to complete the rig. With the current prices, it is not possible to sustain such a GPU operation except for speculation.
Same is the case with BTC mining. It has become out of reach for home miners without significant investment. This is the time when you are compelled to envy all the people who got into this during the PC era. Yet, those people were there because they were technically sound at this and made their millions because of what they knew.

So its not the money but the knowledge/ information that is valuable. Money is just the convenient by-product.
1893  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [AMA] The Life of a Professional Gambler on: January 29, 2020, 04:21:02 PM
Great thread to read as my first one coming into the Gambling section. Being a professional gambler yourself, I am sure you have dipped hands into almost everything from dice games, poker to slots, maybe in both the online as well as real-world casino format. So here is my question.

How would you describe to someone about the world of gambling including its value as entertainment as well as a source of income, like in your case.

PS: You described the sports betting and your strategy towards it in one of the answers. It seems a big part of it is actually watching a lot of sports. So, Watching sports and then earning money off of it, you have done quite well..

Long before Amish Tripathi released his triology, I watched this fun the video "Amish Paradise" around 2004-05.
Then went on to read about the Amish community in USA that live by the old ways and still refuse the conveniences of technology. I liked the concept enough and they have been a loved prefix ever since. Plus they rhymed nicely.

What exactly are they trying to do?

I logged in after a long time and see this Altcoin announcement about some Dark Pool where they supposedly have a solution for all the 200 different exchanges already working out there. Talk about re-inventing the wheel. They also claim some Latvian startup achievement for which i did not find a link.
Any fellow indians lurking here, did you join their telegram etc? It is such a pain to actually look for anything meaningful in Alts. They all inevitably end up screwing themselves.
1899  Local / India / Re: Brainstorming various ideas for Reshaping the Indian Board on: January 09, 2020, 05:28:37 AM
--snip--
As far as this forum is concerned it is highly a decentralized one with freedom of speech being considered as a foremost option. If someone in the name of moderator trying to minimize this then they don't seem to be a suitable candidate for that position. I have been browsing through some of the very older posts on this local board and majority of the Legendary-Hero members were trying to create a seniority kind of attitude over here and there were only 3-4 of them having the qualities of being a fellow knowledgeable poster and at the same time for being a moderator. None of those have expressed interest in being a moderator but were always better in thoughts than the so called veterans. Some of them are

1. Muhammed Zakir - If someone from 2014-2017 era lurking here still in the forum, they should be knowing about them. One of the most knowledgeable posters hailing from India and has always been really very helpful for other posters.

2. krishnapramod - Really helpful in exposing spammers, plagiarists and had a strong knowledge on the usage of forum.

3. amishmanish - We don't need to describe about this guys's contribution to the forum. But lately they have been highly inactive and I am not really sure will they be able to actively participate in this forum.

4. eaLiTy - Top reporter, silent reader and been present here for a quite long time from 2016

5. webtricks - Recently I have an eye on this user and they seem to be emerging as net positive on the forum and Indian board on the whole.

The first 3 were highly inactive and doesn't seem to be returning as active users anytime soon. While the latter 2 would be suitable candidates but it's completely based on reporter history, trustworthiness and their view on how neutral they are.

One who is self-promoting themselves for MOD role shouldn't always be given a priority and I have always seen the kind of self-promotion from so called veterans. And more importantly if someone tries to impose power in the name of moderator they don't fit for the role.

Great post Heisenberg. I agree to the self-promotion bit. I think a moderator should be able to provide a nurturing space for initiatives without making it about self-promotion. He needs to be cool headed and should be able to see through his own biases and conflicts of interest. He shouldn't be very concerned about the "riches" part of it, which unfortuantely, is something that cannot be said for too many people. I think this is pretty normal too and not really exclusive of the Indian crowd. You won't find many exclusive philathrophists in the forum in general too despite the virtue signalling and shaming of newbies. There is definitely the clash of work ethics and frankly, we suck at it in the eastern hemisphere. (Professional Indians being our saving grace..lol)

Thanks for endorsing me and I think you are the best guy for the job right now if @Theymos ever turns his Sauron eye to this. I am happy to be the conscience keeper if you guys need me..Smiley I am more interested to get a bit more connected in real life when the chance comes. Lets see after that.
