Portugal runs for four days straight on renewable energy alone

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/may/18/portugal-runs-for-four-days-straight-on-renewable-energy-alone

<< Portugal kept its lights on with renewable energy alone for four consecutive days last week in a clean energy milestone revealed by data analysis of national energy network figures. Electricity consumption in the Iberian country was fully covered by solar, wind and hydro power in an extraordinary 107-hour run that lasted from 6.45am on Saturday 7 May until 5.45pm the following Wednesday, the analysis says.

News of the zero emissions landmark comes just days after Germany announced that clean energy had powered almost all its electricity needs on Sunday 15 May, with power prices turning negative at several times in the day – effectively paying consumers to use it. Oliver Joy, a spokesman for the Wind Europe trade association said: "We are seeing trends like this spread across Europe - last year with Denmark and now in Portugal. The Iberian peninsula is a great resource for renewables and wind energy, not just for the region but for the whole of Europe."

James Watson, the CEO of SolarPower Europe said: "This is a significant achievement for a European country, but what seems extraordinary today will be commonplace in Europe in just a few years. The energy transition process is gathering momentum and records such as this will continue to be set and broken across Europe."

As recently as 2013, Portugal generated half its electricity from combustible fuels, with 27% coming from nuclear, 13% from hydro, 7.5% from wind and 3% from solar, according to Eurostat figures. By last year the figure had flipped, with wind providing 22% of electricity and all renewable sources together providing 48%, according to the Portuguese renewable energy association. >>

this is very exciting news for sure.. countiries must stop using fossil fuels, nuclear energy to generate energy immediately. they must use renewable enegry resources to get energy..using these resources is really important our planet's future.

Zika is a danger and it must be contained locally. Kudos to the Brazilian president for taking measures to contain it.

I am quite surprised. Dilma Rousseff has completely failed in preventing the spread of this deadly virus. She completely ignored the crisis in the beginning, when it was still possible to contain the outbreak. She woke up from her deep slumber only after hundreds of thousands of people were infected. Now it has even spread to the neighboring countries.

there are no words left to speak . you are definitely right. brazil is late for taking strict precautions over this zika virus problem but it has a little chance to get over this serious problem i guess.

1886  Other / Politics & Society / Re: NYC to Fine Businesses That Don’t Use Correct Gender Pronouns on: May 19, 2016, 06:14:35 AM

Failing to refer to transgenders as "ze" or "hir" a violation of human rights

Businesses in New York City face fines under a new law that makes it a violation of someone’s human rights not to use their preferred “gender pronoun”.

According to the New York City Commission on Human Rights, employees, landlords and businesses who refuse to refer to transgender people as terms such as “ze” and “hir” will be in violation of the New York City Human Rights Law.

Violations include, “Intentional or repeated refusal to use an individual’s preferred name, pronoun or title. For example, repeatedly calling a transgender woman “him” or “Mr.” after she has made clear which pronouns and title she uses.”

“Covered entities may avoid violations of the NYCHRL by creating a policy of asking everyone what their preferred gender pronoun is so that no individual is singled out for such questions and by updating their systems to allow all individuals to self-identify their names and genders. They should not limit the options for identification to male and female only,” states the “legal enforcement guidance” on gender identity.

The notion of a business asking every customer who walks through the door if they want to be identified as “he,” “she,” “ze,” “hir,” or any other of the 71 Facebook “gender options” is of course completely absurd.

“So people can basically force us — on pain of massive legal liability — to say what they want us to say, whether or not we want to endorse the political message associated with that term, and whether or not we think it’s a lie,” writes UCLA Law Prof. Eugene Volokh.

Volokh also makes the point that some people identify as “gender fluid” and so their preferred pronoun could change on a daily basis. Some people also identify as “otherkin”. Are businesses also going to be fined for failing to refer to customers as certain species of animal?

The guideline also states that if a business discovers that its employees or patrons are “refus[ing] to use a transgender employee’s preferred” pronoun, they should be ejected or fired to comply with the law.

The draconian enforcement of gender pronouns is yet another way in which fringe identity politics movements (just 0.03 percent of Americans consider themselves to be transgender) are being hijacked to create onerous burdens on free speech.

Last year we reported on an opinion piece by Columbia University’s John McWhorter, carried by CNN, which called for people who flout rules of gender pronoun political correctness to be publicly shamed in order to compel “society-wide acceptance” of the term “ze” in favor of “he” or “she”.

We are now at the point where people are being increasingly treated like thought criminals who deserve state oppression and punishment for simply believing that there are only two biological genders.

i do not understand why cant we use ''her'' for a  transgender woman or ''his'' a transgender man? there is no need to create new pronouns to adreess lgbt people .. they just change their gender . they dont create a new gender for sure.

1889  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Advocating a War in Iraq, and Offering an Apology for What Came After on: May 17, 2016, 05:30:18 AM
To document the crimes of Saddam Hussein, Kanan Makiya studied thousands of documents smuggled out of Iraq, and years later his findings helped the United States make the case for war. He became famous as the foremost Arab intellectual to support the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and on the day Baghdad fell to American forces, he was in the Oval Office watching the news with President George W. Bush.

For years afterward, as Iraq fell apart, Mr. Makiya’s pen went silent while he struggled to make sense of what happened and his own role in the catastrophe.

As a Middle East scholar at Brandeis University, Mr. Makiya is a man of facts and history. Ultimately, though, he decided the best way to express what he felt became of Iraq was to write fiction. Only with a novel, he says, could he access “the larger meanings and deeper truths about what went wrong post-2003.”

The result is his recently published novel, “The Rope,” the title a reference to the hanging of Mr. Hussein. The book, in fictionalizing many of the familiar traumas and struggles of Iraq over the last decade, is at its broadest an indictment of the country’s Shiite leaders. These are the former exiles who were Mr. Makiya’s friends from their days working in opposition to Mr. Hussein, and who came to rule Iraq after the invasion and still largely do today, having driven the country to the edge of collapse with their scheming and corruption.

when it comes to invasion lands, america is really bad at doing that. millions of innocent people died or forced to leave their homes to move anywhere else. in iraq, there have been too much tragical results but people who responsible for this disaster cannot clear their names.

Most of the people believe Jamala was the not best among the finalist and the jury too had other favorites.
Not only the voice, her song was a political one.
Is the song contest another political propaganda of the US?

eurovision competition is absolutely related to politics. I dont think that they choose the best song of europe on the contrary, they choose politically perfect song.
international competitions are never independent from politics. no matter how you are talented or successful at do someting, you must be politically strong to win a game or competition for sure.

Hidden Microphones Exposed As Part of Government Surveillance Program In The Bay Area

Quote
OAKLAND (CBS SF) — Hidden microphones that are part of a clandestine government surveillance program that has been operating around the Bay Area has been exposed.

Imagine standing at a bus stop, talking to your friend and having your conversation recorded without you knowing.  It happens all the time, and the FBI doesn’t even need a warrant to do it.

Federal agents are planting microphones to secretly record conversations.

Jeff Harp, a KPIX 5 security analyst and former FBI special agent said, “They put microphones under rocks, they put microphones in trees, they plant microphones in equipment. I mean, there’s microphones that are planted in places that people don’t think about, because that’s the intent!”

FBI agents hid microphones inside light fixtures and at a bus stop outside the Oakland Courthouse without a warrant to record conversations, between March 2010 and January 2011.

Federal authorities are trying to prove real estate investors in San Mateo and Alameda counties are guilty of bid rigging and fraud and used these recordings as evidence.
Harp said, “An agent can’t just go out and grab a recording device and plant it somewhere without authorization from a supervisor or special agent in charge.”

The lawyer for one of the accused real estate investors who will ask the judge to throw out the recordings, told KPIX 5 News that, “Speaking in a public place does not mean that the individual has no reasonable expectation of privacy…private communication in a public place qualifies as a protected ‘oral communication’… and therefore may not be intercepted without judicial authorization.”

Harp says that if you’re going to conduct criminal activity, do it in the privacy of your own home. He says that was the original intention of the Fourth Amendment, but it’s up to the judge to interpret it.

Guess this strikes off talking to myself at the bus stop to boost my self esteem. Cry

1894  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Scientists Hold Secret Meeting to Consider Creating a Synthetic Human Genome on: May 15, 2016, 05:10:17 AM

George Church, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School and one of the organizers of the proposed project, said the characterization was a misunderstanding, and that in reality the project was aimed more generally at improving the ability to synthesize long strands of DNA, which could be applied to various types of animals, plants and microbes.

“They’re painting a picture which I don’t think represents the project,” Dr. Church said in an interview.

He said the meeting was closed to the press, and people were asked not to tweet because the project organizers, in an attempt to be transparent, had submitted a paper to a scientific journal. They were therefore not supposed to discuss the idea publicly before publication. He and other organizers said ethical aspects have been amply discussed since the beginning.

The project was initially called HGP2: The Human Genome Synthesis Project, with HGP referring to the Human Genome Project. An invitation to the meeting at Harvard said that the primary goal “would be to synthesize a complete human genome in a cell line within a period of ten years.”

But by the time the meeting was held, the name had been changed to “HGP-Write: Testing Large Synthetic Genomes in Cells.”

The project does not yet have funding, Dr. Church said, though various companies and foundations would be invited to contribute and some have indicated interest. The federal government will also be asked. A spokeswoman for the National Institutes of Health declined to comment, saying the project was in too early a stage.

Besides Dr. Church, the organizers include Jef Boeke, director of the institute for systems genetics at NYU Langone Medical Center, and Andrew Hessel, a self-described futurist who works at the Bay Area software company Autodesk and who first proposed such a project in 2012.

Scientists and companies can now change the DNA in cells, for example by adding foreign genes or changing the letters in the existing genes. This technique is routinely used to make drugs, such as insulin for diabetes, inside genetically modified cells, as well as to make genetically modified crops. And scientists are now debating the ethics of new technology that might allow genetic changes to be made in embryos.

But synthesizing a gene, or an entire genome, would provide the opportunity to make even more extensive changes in DNA.

For instance, companies are now using organisms like yeast to make complex chemicals, like flavorings and fragrances. That requires adding not just one gene to the yeast, like to make insulin, but numerous genes in order to create an entire chemical production process within the cell. With that much tinkering needed, it can be easier to synthesize the DNA from scratch.

Right now, synthesizing DNA is difficult and error-prone. Existing techniques can reliably make strands that are only about 200 base-pairs long, with the base pairs being the chemical units in DNA. A single gene can be hundreds or thousands of base pairs long. To synthesize one of those, multiple 200-unit segments have to be spliced together.

But the cost and capabilities are rapidly improving. Dr. Endy of Stanford, who is a co-founder of a DNA synthesis company called Gen9, said the cost of synthesizing genes has plummeted from $4 per base pair in 2003 to 3 cents now. But even at that rate, the cost for three billion letters would be $90 million. He said if costs continued to decline at the same pace, that figure could reach $100,000 in 20 years.

. Craig Venter, the maverick genetic scientist, synthesized a bacterial genome consisting of about a million base pairs. The synthetic genome was inserted into a cell and took control of that cell. While his first synthetic genome was mainly a copy of an existing genome, Dr. Venter and colleagues this year synthesized a more original bacterial genome, about 500,000 base pairs long.

Dr. Boeke is leading an international consortium that is synthesizing the genome of yeast, which consists of about 12 million base pairs. The scientists are making changes, such as deleting stretches of DNA that do not have any function, in an attempt to make a more streamlined and stable genome.

But the human genome is more than 200 times as large as that of yeast and it is not clear if such a synthesis would be feasible.

Jeremy Minshull, chief executive of DNA 2.0, a DNA synthesis company, questioned if the effort would be worth it.

“Our ability to understand what to build is so far behind what we can build,’’ said Dr. Minshull, who was invited to the meeting at Harvard but did not attend. “I just don’t think that being able to make more and more and more and cheaper and cheaper and cheaper is going to get us the understanding we need.’’

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/14/science/synthetic-human-genome.html

this research could be both bad and good for humanity. scientists can create a super human or an evil creature at the same time. they must think ethics for sure.
