19121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Real names on: May 19, 2011, 06:50:21 PM
After reading Gavins thread on public relations, I wanted to find an easy way to make Bitcoin come across as a more professional, trustworthy project. I don't need to explain why that's an important image to establish.

So I changed my forum display name from [mike] to my real name, which was easily available from the BitCoinJ project anyway. Quite a few important players in the Bitcoin community aren't actually anonymous even though they use nicks on this forum. When people evaluate Bitcoins potential, one question they ask is, who are these people? Is anyone seriously standing behind this project? Just using our real names when posting is a simple step that will re-assure people who are deciding whether it's worth their time. So I encourage you to do the same - it's easy to do by going into the profile tab and clicking "Account Settings".

Here's a quick reference guide to some of the communities top contributors, based on publicly available information:

  • gavinandresen - obvious, no need to introduce the project maintainer
  • MagicalTux - Mark Karpeles, owner of MtGox and Kalyhost
  • vladimir - Vladimir Marchenko, seller of mining contracts
  • xf2_org - Jeff Garzik, who used to do kernel development at Red Hat
  • Hal - Hal Finney, one of the creators of PGP
  • mndrix - Michael Hendrix, creator of the (sadly defunct) CoinPal and CoinCard services

There are a few others I know based on private information. If you're OK with appearing here (or not appearing here) let me know.

BTW I know plenty of people posting in these forums prefer to be totally anonymous, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Mike,

i think this is a great idea but it would be even more helpful if ppl listed their credentials as well.  a name by itself does nothing for me beyond the nickname.  however, credentials, education, etc would really make me more confident that the place is being run by adults who know what they're doing rather than by a bunch of young geeks/ hacksters.

I use Dwolla frequently, since PayPal froze my account too.  See my OTC rating below.

DWOLLA DWOLLA DWOLLA!   Grin

ps: Chase Quickpay is also nice (and free!) if you don't like waiting for the Dwolla verification and ACH funding delays.

what is Chase Quickpay?  how does it work and whats the cost?

why is it that everyone who is ignorant about btc has to ask you "is it dangerous"?  b/c thats always so front and center in your interviews, i think u need to take the opposite angle and say NO, its not dangerous.  its the way for the majority of citizens across the world to gain back their independence from the financial manipulators.  its not the USD per say that we're against; its the banksters who twist the system to their advantage.

i think the way u have to approach your interviews is to ask the fundamental question, why is this happening?  what is the problem?  the answer is simple and is clearly represented by the graph of the value of the USD declining almost 100% in the last century since the advent of the Federal Reserve.  i like to explain it to ppl by drawing a graph of the US monetary supply; essentially an upward parabola and contrast it with a graph of btc generation which is a leveling off.  the stark contrast immediately registers with the avg persons understanding.

... If you want security, I would recommend that you use a wire transfer and buy/sell on Mt Gox.

I had a really great first experience at Bitmarket.EU, where one wires to the seller, rather than the exchange.

IMHO, MtGox is great for professional traders, trading teams, dark-pool dwellers and other market manipulators. Other than that, i think it's time to stop recommending the MtGox monopoly to the average user.

It's one of the entities making the fairytale about "the completely decentralized" Bitcoin a complete and absolute myth...  Cheesy

Ubitex is an anonymous peer to peer exchange.

19126  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone know what happened to knightmb and his 371,000 BTC? on: May 18, 2011, 09:27:51 PM
Either way, both parties seem to be acknowledging that bitcoins is, indeed, real.  At least there is a positive in all of this. :-P

Oh, it's even better than that.  The party that acknowledged the reality of Bitcoins seems to have made out like a bandit.  While the party that had every opportunity to do so, and didn't, ends up looking like fools.

And that's exactly the way capitalism is supposed to work.  Risk brings reward.  All trades are not equal trades.  Information is not universal.  Stupidity is punished.  No one bails out the losers.

except in the USSA

I am on dwolla with this username.  It is my favorite exchange medium, because there is little fuss and they will ACH the funds on the cheap.  Smiley

i just spoke to dwolla and they don't have a "username" field.  how do u do this?
19129  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can we start a list of trusted Dwolla users? on: May 18, 2011, 01:00:01 PM

19133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hidden Resiliency of Network on: May 17, 2011, 10:01:57 PM
I would also be one of those non-mining users willing to mine at a loss for the good of the system, should it ever come under attack.

A plan isn't really necessary.  A 'watchdog' process needs to be developed to notify users should something strange start to occur.  For example, a watchdog process could warn the client owner of the possibility of a blockchain split in progress by watching for a relatively sudden drop in effective network hashing power.  This could be done by watching the interval between accepted blocks, and if the time between any two blocks more than doubles this average, flag a warning.  If the next one is over 180% of the noted prior average time, confidence in a problem increases.  If a third is over 150% of average time, a network split has almost certainly occurred, and users should be aware of a possible double spending attempt.

Likewise, a watchdog process could be set up to look for signs that the blockchain is under attack, such as several consecutive blockchain reorganizations occurring in a relatively short time frame.

couldn't this be automated with a generated alert to the Forum?
19134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we prevent money laundering and assasinations? on: May 17, 2011, 01:45:25 PM
to me all this fantasy talk about assasinations, money laundering, drugs, etc. are just wild ramblings of young btc'ers who let their minds run wild  and giddy over a new appreciating currency.  bottom line, u can be tracked if necessary.
19135  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Hidden Resiliency of Network on: May 17, 2011, 01:26:08 PM
there have been no shortages of theories of how an adversary to btc could attack the network.  most revolve around taking over 50% of the network to destroy the validity of the block chain.  i was thinking how i as an individual have stopped mining long ago b/c of my reduced ability to compete in generating coins with the pooled miners.  however, i do have 3 rather new and speedy CPU computers that can generate a not too insignificant hash rate but are off the btc network.  i also have developed a significant financial interest in btc and stock, not to mention a philosophical love of the concept.  if an attack by an outsider were to occur i for one would have no problem turning on my 3 computers to add to the resiliency of the network.  i'm wondering if anyone has worked out any models trying to estimate what the hidden resiliency of network from others like me might be?  i'm willing to bet that well over 60% of btc users might be in my category.  in fact, one of the administrators should try to outline a plan to mobilize as many btc users with dormant clients in event of an attack like this.  the way i see it, this could be a good way to snuff out and severely damage an adversary.

19137  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning: Bitcoin4Cash fraud! Won't ever do business with Madhatter again. on: May 17, 2011, 04:44:19 AM
I agree--a lot of this commentary is premature until Madhatter has a chance to respond.  My intent in posting was not to hand out judge, jury, and executioner roles to the forums; but rather to underscore that this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed properly in order for faith in Bitcoin4cash to be restored.
He did say he doesn't visit this forum very often, hopeful someone can drop him a line so he can provide some explanation.

he knows this thread exists believe me.
19138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning: Bitcoin4Cash fraud! Won't ever do business with Madhatter again. on: May 17, 2011, 04:43:41 AM
I'm in California and I did a locked in rate transaction with bitcoin4cash at $1.44. It took about 2 weeks for bitcoin4cash to receive my cash and I received all of my coins at $6+.

Are you saying he gave you the higher rate even though you locked way low at $1.44? If so, that would be heroic of him.

He honored the contract to give me the fixed amount of bitcoins I purchased at the locked in rate, so yes.

well, that just proves my point; he lost 6/1.44 or 417% on that one tx.  multiply those kinda losses x potentially dozens if not hundreds of lock ins and he's out of business.

PROBLEM RESOLVED!!! well, thank God for Theymos.  on his suggestion, i deleted the 2 block files and let the client redownload the block chain and it finally worked.  SO relieved!
