Damn. Sorry for your loss
I haven't looked into nut allergies before. What causes those? Are they genetic, or some chemical/embryonic development fluke?
Peanuts are kinda like nature's version of "Russian virus infested warez sites". Peanuts contain a vast spectrum of highly concentrated, long living and aggressive allergens. Which is what makes them so dangerous.
Now for a long time the going theory was that one's specific prevalence to become sensitized to peanuts and develop the allergy was entirely hereditary. However for the last 30 years we have been seeing a meteoric rise in peanut allergy cases specifically in the West. A rise that is not explainable by genetic characteristics alone. There must be another factor influencing this affecting especially the very young.
Two culprits have been identified as the most likely candidates:
- The increased use of inexpensive, badly refined peanut oil in baby skin cremes, lotions and wound salves
- The increased use of peanut butter and oil in prepared foodstuffs for children, often hidden as "plant-based fat/oil"
