1981  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: my first post on: September 17, 2021, 12:24:09 PM
Greetings to all the members of bitcointalk, am a new member here but a cryptocurrency lover and an investor for over a year now.
I have read all the rules guiding the forum and spent days getting myself familiar with how things work here, your advice and opinions on how to be a responsible member of bitcointalk are all am seeking.

Just act normal while being here and posting here.

If you're not after anything like ranks then you'll do fine just by posting and engaging with discussion. Also try to make use of search functions here and on search engines if you can before asking questions but if you can't find the answer there quickly, then open a topic.
1982  Other / Meta / Re: Delete/Merit button on: September 17, 2021, 11:54:03 AM
My observation is very simple yet I don't know why it actually escaped the eagle eyes of moderators and administrators or it had been discussed here before. The bottom right side of that uploaded picture shows "Reply", "Quote" and "Notify" buttons and I'm wondering why "Delete" and "Merit" buttons aren't included too

This has been mentioned before and I think it was a design decision by Theymos (didn't comment on that thread).

It's probably to make life a bit harder for people who want to sell merits as it'd be easier to find older posts to start meriting if it was done differently from that.
1983  Economy / Economics / Re: Now UK is facing inflation so choose the best for you.. on: September 16, 2021, 11:14:25 AM
Moreover the government has ramped up the taxes and cut the social benefits also.Who is gonna face all these situations in bad way? The middle class who have trusted the banking system and government but they failed to manage such situations. This is just a step towards devaluation of your fiat and you will be worth zero near future.

I assumed the working classes would see the greatest impact. The middle classes will likely already own a lot of assets/production power that are inflation resistant.

Inflation going up, in the case of the ons statistics, only means:
1. More people are spending
2. The cost of living is rising
3. A mixture of the two.

It's normally 3 that causes an increase but it seems like it's normal to see something like this after a recession and it has happened before (notably the 70s).
1984  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: 10x leverage above are simple ways the avarage are losing to the rich on: September 15, 2021, 10:11:43 AM
Yeah I think 125x leverage is definitely far too much for not gambling but what is people are going to exchanges to gamble? Most of the options market sounds like it could've been devised out of a few people gambling on stocks and seeing where they could get.

100x leverage has definitely become. Smaller. I remember the price being $2900 and having a liquidation price at 100x of $2886, that was way worse!

I'd also say 10-20x leverage might be comfortable for very immediate price movements too that someone's expecting and I've used both of those fine in the past with a high enough win rate - but if you're just wanting a high win rate and getting stressed about it you're not going to get one.
1985  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: will electrum wallet be backward compatible in near future ? on: September 15, 2021, 10:07:23 AM

or should i store copy of electrum's source code along with my seed phrase, for future use ? you know for worst case scenarios ?
so i could compile it then and could access my coins.

You're probably better off using that method as a just in case.

There'll probably always be copies of electrum out there but if you already have one yourself, you'll know you've always got it then and you can extract stuff from electrum to get access to the funds (like private keys and Master private keys).
1986  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: [scalpers] Don't just join a moving train on: September 15, 2021, 07:56:52 AM

Just imagine joining a train when it's has gotten to it's final destination. Certainly it would have to take you back to it's original stating point before it got to where you meet it. Most scalpers I know don't trade the obvious the just follow the candle volatility. From my observation I discovered scalpers avoid stop loss because the are scared of been stopped out of a trade too early only for the trade to end up going in their direction.

Scalping is one kind of trading that requires your smartness to know when to take the available profit and close your trade

Avoiding setting a stop loss is definitely a problem with that strategy as well as assuming it's good enough on its own. The thing with avoiding setting a stop loss has been criticised in other threads about copy-trading and it's easy to see when a copied-trader over leverages as the fund drastically reduces.

If you're mixing the "set order in direction of movement" with some technical analysis then you'll do a lot better than if you weren't (as long as you set comfortable take profits).
1987  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Beginner question] Vanity from Xpub on: September 14, 2021, 09:25:47 PM
I don't think it's been done yet but I think it might be quite slow to function and that's why it hasn't been done and published at least.
1988  Economy / Reputation / Re: BADecker is one of the most dedicated and successful trolls on the forum on: September 14, 2021, 05:00:51 PM
After seeing him around on Off Topic, and P&S, reading his posts and looking at his older posts, I have come to the conclusion that BADecker is one of the biggest trolls on this forum. It sealed my conclusion as well after a private conversation with him.

Im not personally attacking them, Im just saying that they are a gigantic troll.

You don't know how much I was hoping this post would be authored by him.

It's just dedication to reading up and going against what the popular opinion is but I think it kinda helps the p&s board be a bit different.
1989  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Using Ledger on Electrum - "the sign path is unusual" on: September 14, 2021, 01:13:27 PM
Where are you sending the funds too? If it's a wallet you control then it might be possible that it's asking you to confirm sending "change" but if you're unsure then I'd try sending it all to the other address/wallet and back to see if that works.
1990  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If you can sell Bitcoin on Exchange with good rate, why selling to resellers on: September 14, 2021, 01:56:43 AM
I have noticed people selling there bitcoin to resellers who will buy low and sell high making  few profits from what they bought from others. They do make frequent Bitcoin transactions selling to people that are urgently in need of it with bigger profits especially when the transaction is large. Exchanges had made Bitcoin transactions easier through peer to peer trading with an obvious rate which will be more profits to sellers when they sell through exchanges than when they sell to resellers who later sell to the public.

It depends on what it is as people are after different things.
Some might be after a longer term fixed price, the exchange calculates rates by seconds while meeting up with someone can give you a rate that lasts a day or two if they've already bought the bitcoin.
There's also an anonymity standpoint to buying and selling bitcoin from individuals too. I think there's also a more personal touch with that method as well as they might provide better support as a small company/individual could respond and control issues a lot faster than an exchange.
1991  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm back into Bitcoin! on: September 13, 2021, 11:21:32 PM
Today I woke up to this: 2.49 BTC sitting in the balance field. Man, I knew Bitcoin wasn't worth 20$ anymore! Let me tell you, this made my day, probably, my week or even this entire year!
That seems quite lucky. If you've still got some browser history or know of an email address you might have used, it might be an interesting idea to search your inbox to see if you can uncover any other funds - I've found some in the past in random places that I have come back to years later.

Is there anything I need to do now that I'm holding a pretty big amount of Bitcoin? I've read that hardware wallets are the safest, should I buy one? Is there anything I need to know?

Yeah hardware wallets are probably one of the best options at the moment but I'd also try to familiarise yourself with how everything works and how the hardware wallet works. Only buy them from the official websites too (no third party seller sites - they're still fairly cheap to ship internationally anyway).

I'd recommend trying not to visit random sites too, or to get a second laptop you can use just for crypto. It's possible messages can still be passed to a hardware wallet that might make you sign your coins across if you're not concentrating (the display on the hardware wallet normally says the amounts of funds and the address they're being sent to).
1992  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is this a safe Vanity address generator? on: September 13, 2021, 03:01:13 PM
Vanitygen should be safe, I downloaded it from the links on here (most recently was a few days ago actually): https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Vanitygen ← I think this is one of the sites the forum owns.

But the version I downloaded was 0.20-win.
1993  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Does a trader needs to a full time trader to be successful? on: September 12, 2021, 06:49:10 PM
I think most people trade fairly part time. If you think about it, most people trade 5m charts to 1d charts and a new pattern can take at least an hour to form so if trading just one or two instruments, you don't need to take much time at all to work out whether to trade before moving away from the charts.

Of course, people who do fast paced trading or who like to cover a lot of the market will be more active trading and might start doing it full time - but I'm not even sure it's helpful/healthy to trade full time (especially as a beginner).
1994  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My System for Security/Protection of Hardware Wallets and Valuables on: September 12, 2021, 06:36:26 PM
If lockable v not lockable are different prices, I'd just go for one that isn't locked.

I'm not sure a lock provides much security these days and it might just make the box look worth stealing (and also you've got to keep hold of the keys or be able to/know someone who can pick it).

The fire and flood proofing are definitely a good idea to have though - although hardware wallets may be flood proof/salvageable.
1995  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Brokers accepting bitcoin on: September 12, 2021, 06:33:31 PM
What country are you in? There's a lot of recommendations around and you could probably have a look at reviews to see which is best for you.

I'd recommend coinbase.com at the moment (I think they serve the most countries) but there are other sites you can use that might be better depending on how you want to fund or withdraw from the exchange.
1996  Other / Meta / Re: Did you notice that forum have fewer trolls in 2021? on: September 12, 2021, 06:30:45 PM
A lot of things have reduced since the introduction of the merit system/over the past few years and it's quite interesting.

There were definitely a lot more threads created (especially spammy ones) back in the last bull run.

These figures are likely a knock on effect of the merit system and potential a larger/older community (some things are more moderated now than they used to be and a slight change in moderation policy has quite a big change for forum content). It does seem like content is improving though too as I say this, although it might be losing variety in the main boards.
1997  Other / Meta / Re: Backlashes fuel to growth on: September 10, 2021, 04:18:20 PM
If this was a topic on your reputation, the forum is often quite forgiving with trusts after a while afaik - but Stop promoting scams if you can get accepted into other campaigns.

This could be a lesson to others on searching the reputation of a project before you agree to work with them. People have been given red trust for a project that turned scam part way though but that's unlikely and it's often quite easy to see how many unsolved scam accusations there are for companies too and how responsive their support is - if they have a presence on a forum you'd expect them to hire a relations manager or be that person if problems are rarely responded to.
1998  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: sharing address on Electrum on Tails (without persistence) on: September 10, 2021, 02:31:53 PM
You can get a qr code on tails. I'm not sure the best way of loading up the wallet though other than typing in the mnemonic (you might want to make a 24 word one because 12 word ones are quite memorable after you've typed them in a couple times).

Electrum does have it's own qr feature near the request tab and then another one if you click on address details in the addresses tab (but you might have to enable the addresses tab first).

It'll depend on what tails is capable of doing though if you want to run the whole thing offline and SEND funds too - such as if it has a driver for a webcam you want to use.
1999  Economy / Economics / Re: Two basic things that can give you an advantage on: September 09, 2021, 07:20:24 PM
Remaining calm is always the best thing you can do. The past has told us that most people who haven't sold their coins have made decent profits by just holding onto them.

I'd definitely by bitcoin at a drop, not sure about the top 10 though as they might suffer harder than btc and a few of them (usdc and doge) might be bad for long term holding.
2000  Other / Meta / Re: Where can I find signature campaigns ? on: September 09, 2021, 06:33:23 PM
There's a complete list of them here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=615953.0

I think there are only 3 available for your rank though.
