21  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BTC Guild - 0% Fee Mining Pool (Long polling, JSON API) on: May 12, 2011, 05:51:57 PM
Thank you for all the support, especially the generous donators giving above and beyond the 2.5% amount I've set as the "invalid protection+instant payout" threshold.

When I started the pool, I did not expect to see anywhere near this level of generosity, which is why I decided to consider the pool 0% fee (nothing off the top), and just rounding the user rewards down at the 0.000X level.  The donations being received completely dwarf the rounding kept by the pool, which was already very insignificant [0.024%].  As a result, I will be changing the pool to round down to the 8th decimal, the limit of what BitCoin supports.

This change will be going live this evening, and be applied to all future blocks.

Wow, thank you! This will help many lower production users. Cheesy
22  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Best Case and Power Supply for 4 x ATI 5970 Setup? on: May 12, 2011, 04:38:06 PM
but you know that windows only support 4 and linux 8 gpus? so nothing more than 4x5970 won't work anyway

you should be able to put second psu in 5.25 bay of any big tower case with only minor modifications, 2 psu cases are quite rare, otherwise even something like antec hcp 1200 may not be enough if you plan any overclocking as it can only deliver 99A

Yeah, I'm planning on 8 x GPUs via Linux (unless I can't find a good way to fit that many into one rig). By more than 4 cards, I just mean that I will keep building out my farm if all goes well.

Oh cool, in the optical drive bay? Would I still be able to put a DVD-ROM in there as well?

I'm trying to go as cheap as possible, while still having enough power, space, and airflow to sustain 4 x ATI 5970 cards. Any suggestions?

use two psus, it will be much cheaper that way
you will need ~130A on 12V even with low end cpu

Yeah, I've been thinking about that... but then how would I fit both of them into the case? Or is there some better configuration for these cards? All I know is that I want 4+ cards running somewhere somehow.

And another? very lucky round!

Yeah, it looks like 3 different blocks were found in the span of about 2 minutes, hahaha. Shocked

(And a 4th block only 3 minutes after that.)

Actually, that 4th block was *another* one of ours! Too bad I didn't find any shares during the intervening 3 minutes... Sad

27  Bitcoin / Mining / Best Case and Power Supply for 4 x ATI 5970 Setup? on: May 12, 2011, 03:49:36 PM
Hi there!

I'm almost done planning out my first mining rig, but what case and power supply should I use? Huh

I'm trying to go as cheap as possible, while still having enough power, space, and airflow to sustain 4 x ATI 5970 cards. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance! Smiley

29  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: ATI Video Cards... Series 5 vs Series 6 on: May 09, 2011, 02:57:47 AM
That seems really high, considering the 6990s are $730 new at Newegg.

High? Yeah... ok. Tell me where you can find a brand-new 5970 for less than $650-$700. They are better miners, and they are becoming very scarce now. There are many sites, such as Amazon, that are actually charging $800+ due to their limited availability. But sure, let me go ahead and spend like $175 more to buy a 6990 from Newegg (the total price will be around $800 after taxes!).

Or maybe you didn't notice that this card is brand-new? Maybe a used card could be had for less or something, but I'm not gonna mess around with crap like that.

Thanks for all the input everyone! I just won a brand-new 5970 on eBay for $610 (or $625 including shipping). What do you think, good price? Smiley

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

this will answer all your questions.

I thank you, but I have already looked there. The problem is that there are multiple entries for each card. This makes it impossible to tell which cards are actually better. For instance, the 6990 and 5970 cards are all intertwined. Certainly, the top card is a 5970, but perhaps it's just overclocked more than the others...

Is there any kind of consensus as to which cards actually work out the best? Grin
32  Bitcoin / Mining / ATI Video Cards... Series 5 vs Series 6 on: May 08, 2011, 02:55:34 PM
Hi Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my video card for mining purposes, but I've been out of the hardware loop for a while. The most confusing thing is that it seems like the Series 6 video cards may not always be better due to the weird choices that AMD made...

Which is better, 6990 or 5970? What about 6970 vs 5870? Or 6950 vs 5850? Better yet, are these even the right comparisons to be making? Mainly, I would like to figure out two things: (1) the absolute best mining card, and (2) the absolute best card excluding the dual-core ~$700 cards (i.e., excluding 6990 and 5970).

I'm mainly interested to hear about which cards are better for mining, but I do game as well, so any info on that would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Muhahahahaz
