21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Any word on amd vega hash rates? on: May 26, 2018, 02:54:48 PM
I can confirm to anyone interested that running wattman in newer adrenaline drivers and setting -20% power along with manually setting clocks for the higher two p-states does not save as much power and heat as using the old power tables from the guide.  Loading the power tables, using the same clock settings in ODT, saves me at least 50w and cuts down on heat output for my xfx vega 64.

Those of you mining with cast-xmr are you using xmr-stak for cpu mining or is xm-rig a better option there?  I've been thinking of trying cast since everyone seems to swear by it as far as hash rates go it is supposed to be faster than xmr-stak.

I removed and reinstalled w/DDU 18.4.1 adrenaline and am trying to optimize Wattman. Power consumption with a single XFX Vega64 LC card and a Ryzen 1700 is around 310w. Is this good and if not how can I improve? RAM is set to 1100mhz 905mv. GPU is set to 1212/1407mhz and 905/925mv. Power limit set to -20%.  Radiator fan is spun to around 2500rpm which keeps core temp in the mid 40s.  HBM is around 5-10c warmer.

I am using XMR-STAK and have been unable to get higher than 1960 h/s. Both indexes are set to 1824 intensity with comp mode false. Every time I play with these hash seems to get worse not better and I see driver crashes show up in event viewer when closing XMR out,

Am I at the limit then? TIA

Using adrenaline drivers I followed the guide and was slowly tuning clock speeds on my six gpu red devil 56 rig.  Suddenly seemingly out of the blue the system was unstable and started to bootloop on me and just generally became a giant pita.

Rolling back the power tables to 75% and clocks back down to 850mhz helped a lot.  Still I am not able to make it much past 24 hours before the display driver bombs out.  Using the same 1936 intensity in the guide.

I'm desperate now and have pulled memory back to 800mhz and loaded the stock tables.  I don't know what else to do about this.  Has anyone had something like this happen?  It is really beginning to make me angry.   Angry

I have no explanation for the sudden change in stability.  It is almost as if one or more of the cards can't handle power tables any more.  I have even re-installed my OS and made sure to keep windows 10 from updating to 1803.

The guide was written a while back and was for the blockchain drivers.  Could the power tables in the guide not work as well with the adrenaline drivers?

A $2000 race car engine?  What is that a junkyard LS1?  Grin

ASIC don't exactly have a reputation for being quiet.  I guess we'll see.

What is wrong with more efficient hardware unless you have not made your money back on GPUs?
I'd be wasting your time at this point.  I've tried to explain it once already.  Perhaps someone else can do a better job than me.  Perhaps you have already heard it all - and feel your position is solid.

My small six GPU rig has definitely NOT paid for itself however I didn't spend so much money on it that ROI is a big issue for me.  I did this mainly for fun - because I enjoy GPU mining.

I don't have a statement, asking you how long you've been mining with GPU's will reveal all I need to know.
Since late last year.

Asking seriously.
Rather than ask a leading personal question why don't you just make your statement so as to not waste your time or mine?  Thanks.

What about bitcoin?  Who mines it?  And with what hardware made by whom?  Connect the dots.

And sitting in a room with 3000w of GPUs vs a 300w ASIC get out of here with that baloney.  The sad thing is as loud as the ASICs typically are the GPU rig would probably be quieter.  And your not going to want either one of them running hot.

If this is evolution it's akin to a retarded fish frog growing a fourth leg after having buttsechs with a squirrel.

I read his original statements.  Yes they never said they would fight to the death forever until the end of time to stop this swearing on their mother's grave.  The original statement is plain to me.  They are pretty much giving up without barely a whimper now.  They are clearly not keeping with the spirit of that original statement.  Regardless - the situation we have now is what it is.

I don't see it as a positive turn of events - perhaps you do.  I don't see much advantage to this.  Now we will have skyrocketing difficulty where the only way you can continue to be involved is to buy one of the new machines along with everyone else.  Causing difficulty to continue to climb and your margins to shrink again.  In the end once things settle you're back close to where you started only you went to all the trouble and expense of switching your entire setup.  And now concentrated all that hash into fewer devices, more costly devices, and devices controlled by a single entity.  An entity that at this point we are lucky in that the only thing we are (reasonably) sure of is mining privately before releasing to the public.

ASIC mining sucks.  Putting a GPU rig together is a fun thing.  An ASIC not so much.  The hobby aspect of this thing for me anyway evaporates once we get to that point.  For people who are serious investors maybe not so much.  To each his own I suppose.

Good luck to us all.

I agree, decentralisation depends on which pool you choose and not if you use GPU, CPU, FPGA or ASIC. Ethermine has 28% of the ETH network, it's not due to ASICs.
https://etherscan.io/stat/miner?range=7&blocktype=blocks
I agree that is also another part of the picture.  It isn't good to concentrate a majority of hash in one location.  Nor is it good to have the vast majority if not all of your hash produced by a singular type of device that is produced in fewer quantity and by a single entity.

Hash spread into multiple locations/pools and produced by as many individual devices of different type and origin is optimal.

Decentralization---CPUs----GPUs----Asics----ETH PoS---Centralization
Ideally in order to achieve the most decentralization possible.  All of these devices/methods of securing the network would be useful to secure the network.  In a perfect world.

They already changed their minds and spun a 180 from statements made originally regarding their opinion on ASIC resistance.

This change of mind has upset some of their backers.  I agree that yet more upset could be the result of yet another 180 degree change of direction on the issue.  Though such things can be difficult to predict.

Assuming there is no fork and GPU miners are forced out.  ASIC is very profitable in the short term.  Then the same arms race that everyone is engaged in continues.  Difficulty goes through the roof and profitability drops through the floor.  A new ASIC comes out after they've mined with it for months in advance, they sell it to you, and the cycle continues.  Wash/rinse/repeat.  This type of cycle is not as extreme with GPUs since the performance differential between generations is not typically as significant.

Aside from the centralization debate.  For those of us who do this partly as a hobby GPUs are superior.  Putting rigs together and tinkering with them has been a lot of fun for me.  Resale value and low cost of entry for a hobbyist, novice, or small time miner are pluses.  An ASIC is not really much fun to me.

I have to respect the fact that a specialized device like the ASIC is usually going to be able to monopolize.  If it comes to pass that GPUs are unable to mine anything decent for whatever reason I'd be disappointed and probably quit mining at that point.  Further investment would be buying the currency only.

.2% of global power use. Buncha paranoid nonsense.

^^ Ed Zachary

So what do you do?  Just mine the creek until it's played out.  No other deposits to mine?  Then sell your shovel and pan.  Get out.  Either that or spend more money on heavy equipment (aka, ASIC or FPGA) and compete on the big boy level.
36  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: There here, and what now with Zcash ? on: May 04, 2018, 12:59:37 PM
Totally agree.  The more (shitty) projects that don't get away from ASIC dominance just pushes GPU hash onto fewer other projects.  The end result is skyrocketing difficulty - for everyone.

If eth and zec would fork we'd all be in much better shape.  The cunts refuse to do it.  So we're in a bad situation now.

People say to flash the BIOS to vega64.

What if your card has Hynix and the vega64 model in your product line has samsung?  Isn't that going to brick the card?
38  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Any word on amd vega hash rates? on: May 04, 2018, 02:56:32 AM
The small hash rate drop I saw is due to the Windows 10 update that dropped yesterday.

I loaded the new AMD driver and the only issue I noted was that OverdriveNTool doesn't spin the fan up on one of my two Vega64 when I command it.  Once I start the miner up - it spins up.  Not sure why it is acting that way now.  Hash rates are no difference vs. the previous driver.

I suspect while the situation with the newer Adrenaline drivers is much improved the blockchain drivers are still a little faster for mining.  With my Vega64 clocked 1408 core and 1100 memory I'm getting 1950 h/s.  With the blockchain drivers it would be 100 h/s more than that.  I don't want to deal with the issues those drivers have especially on a system like this where it isn't a dedicated miner.
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: AMD Rx Vega - CryptonightV7 - mining rig on: May 04, 2018, 02:52:56 AM
Whatever you do bear in mind most non reference Vega 56 will have Hynix memory which doesn't overclock like Samsung.  If you want to guarantee Samsung memory you'll either have to find reference Vega 56 (good luck) or spend more money on a Vega 64 model.
40  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Any word on amd vega hash rates? on: May 03, 2018, 06:20:49 PM
Since I haven't loaded the new driver yet.  I would tend to blame the Windows update on this client for causing that drop in hash.

I'm not sure if anyone has tried the new AMD driver - there has been zero talk of it here.  I'm tempted however am a little concerned about causing new issues such as breaking OverdriveNTool.
