21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: (ANN)(PRERELEASE) - parabolas - launching with pools, faucets-YOU can contribute on: August 30, 2013, 05:22:22 PM
Shoot me a PM when you think Parabolas are ready for an exchange. I can pull some strings Wink

Thanks!  Will do.

reserved

As I am new to the forum, one question:
Why are other people reserving?  (Not just OP and Matthew)

Thanks!
23  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: (ANN)(PRERELEASE) - parabolas - launching with pools, faucets-YOU can contribute on: August 29, 2013, 02:46:28 AM
I have personally purchased a VPS to be used as a node. $4.05, paid in BTC. Over half the amount of BTC that I have mined.  Undecided

Matthew:out

Thank you!  Hopefully the coin will compensate you and get back your BTC! (open source devs never get paid, maybe this could be like DVC)

As for coding, would it be good to create a github repo and have forum members submit pull requests?
24  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: (ANN)(PRERELEASE) - parabolas - launching with pools, faucets-YOU can contribute on: August 26, 2013, 02:07:03 AM
Go for CPU only and ask for help as you will need it.

Thanks!  Matthew has proposed the new algos, will they be CPU only?

Also, I would like to make it sort of devcoins-like, where the developers get a certain percentage (like 1%), rather than premine, for extra services after launch.  (E.g. Is it possible for every 99th block to have double the amount of coins, but 1/2 goes to the devs for bounties and 1/2 goes to the miner)

Once more, I would like to thank everyone for their support!

.4btc and you have your source and windows qts in about an hour or two. Pos, pow whatever you want.

CPU only?  I think it can easily be done with some tweaks to the quark code or something.

Also what about Mac binaries?  I only work on linux.

when will it be published?

Launch date is not yet set in stone but you can expect it at least in the next month or so.  This thread will get updated so stay tuned!
27  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: (ANN)(PRERELEASE) - parabolas - launching with pools, faucets-YOU can contribute on: August 23, 2013, 04:09:48 AM
How about a bit more on the specs?

Semi-scarce, block reward will probably be a random amount between 2 and 6, but there will be a bonus "square" block.  (Parabolas). e.g. Instead of 2 you would get 4, instead of 6, 36, etc.

We will try to implement a primecoin-like proof of work scheme (hashing parabolas with complex solutions, etc), or it will just be a sha256 or scrypt coin.

If you have something to bring to the table just PM!

Introduction
This is a prerelease thread for parabolas.   This cryptocurrency will launch with a pool, website, faucet, block explorer, and hopefully a store and exchange so that there are multiple services on launch.  When the coin has a use, it will be more valuable than just a coin to be day traded.

Block rewards:
95% goes to miners (every 94th block is a x6 block, with miners getting the regular reward and devs getting the rest)
Why is there a dev fund?
This coin will have NO premine, so the devs will not be able to make a quick profit.  Instead, we will get a gradual payoff as the coin matures.

30  Other / Meta / Re: If buying accounts is allowed, why doesn't the forum sell them? on: August 22, 2013, 04:05:41 AM
The forum could only realistically sell newbie accounts, with the restrictions already removed, and at a price to discourage spammers.  But I believe most people looking to buy accounts want reputable accounts, and I don't think it'd bide well if the forum started to seize accounts to sell them Tongue
Create account. Set creation date to late '11, insert 15 crap posts inside dead threads nobody will resurrect.

Some template posts from late 2011:

  • Do you think bitcoin will ever hit $30 again?
  • What is the best CPU for mining?
  • I just invested all my bitcoins in Bitcoin Savings and Trust, I am going to be rich!

I'm new to this but I gotta LOL at that.
31  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Innovation in altcoins on: August 22, 2013, 04:00:49 AM
Does innovation really matter in a coin?  What I want to see is just a coin that launches with lots of services and that can maintain itself (its network) for a long time securely.

Why use is an innovative coin without services?

It is always great to see more services and activities focused around Bitcoin and crypto-currencies in general.  I glanced over the website and it looks appealing.  Good luck with your project!

Yes, good luck!

Math!  I'm x^2. How do you do? Grin

Lol Smiley

I dont get it. I said I was new to the site hence the 2 posts, but not new to mining for coins...... Am I missing something???

Yes, on this site post count is everything. Some people don't realize that there's a world outside of BTC talk.

Plus one!

Still available!

How do you determine the worth of an account?
35  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Linux or windows 7 on: August 06, 2013, 02:33:23 AM
One of the nice things about Linux is that you can give use to your old computers. This weekend I put CrunchBang Linux (uses very low resources) on my old HP 6736 for mining with USB Erupters (not using any GPUs). It has a 667MHz Celeron, 256MB RAM, and USB 1.0 (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph06109&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=60421). I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done that on Windows, and the cost was free. To save watts, I disconnected power to the CD and floppy drives and the setup uses only 42 watts when running, and would be even less if I had used a USB flash drive instead of the HD to host the OS. (For really low watts, you could go with a Raspberry Pi).

With everything running, including cgminer 3.1.1, I don't go over 135MB RAM and CPU use is negligible. The accepted shares, HW errors, and other measurements are in line with what I see in my other setups, so the age of the computer isn't affecting anything.

So, if you have Erupters and an old computer laying around, and you don't want to buy a RPi, put the old computer to use. Your only cost would be a powered hub (if using multiple Erupters).

This is a bit off topic, but are erupters a good investment these days?

Is there a place where we can see when each two-week activity period starts and ends?
thanks

Just lie back, relax and let it happen.

Ok.

By the way, did you change your username?
I remember another user who had the same userpic and text.  Just curious. Smiley
