21  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-29 European Parliament: Bitcoin, Gold and Silver: Once and Future Money on: June 02, 2013, 07:42:36 AM
He argues that it is quite likely that all major banks will refuse to facilitate Bitcoin for fear or repercussions by the government. He has a point but seems to underestimate just how decentralized Bitcoin can be and how hard it can be to extinguish, as the woman at 53 minutes in argues.
22  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mt. Gox account hacked on: May 29, 2013, 07:25:44 AM
Mine was hacked Saturday, also from China but a different IP.
I'm wondering how this happened, MtGox was always accessed using a secure computer and I had not logged in to the account for weeks. I've not taken any interest in any alt-coins or similar programs that might have held a trojan.
23  Other / Beginners & Help / Estimating the waiting time for a confirmation at the wallet level on: May 25, 2013, 07:50:23 PM
I see a large number of posts having to do with confusion or regret at the inability of their transactions to confirm due to a very small fee applied. Would it not be possible for a wallet to estimate the time needed to confirm a transaction of a given amount and fee from looking back at the waiting time for similar transactions over the past few weeks? Or is the volume just not there to make a reliable estimate?
24  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: why not make the base unit mBTC instead of BTC on: May 25, 2013, 11:14:18 AM
It has been speculated that bitcoins will eventually be referred to using the lower denomination units, but it just hasn't come to that yet. Adopting a new base unit would be the responsibility of the wallet developers and the community as a whole.
I would also point out that the monetary unit should evoke more of a sense of its value than the quantity, no one really proclaims that they only received a "mere 0.5" of a gold bar. But I personally dont know of anyone that keeps track of their wealth in gold bars so again were back to moving to a lower denominated unit for convenience.
25  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 Mining Guide / HOWTO on: May 21, 2011, 06:49:01 PM
Ubuntu Natty(11.04) 64 Bit
Nvidia GTX 260 with the proprietary 270.41.06 drivers installed.

poclbm just spits out "Problems communicating with bitcoin RPC"

Any ideas?
26  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: GUIMiner fails to connect. Infinite loop? on: May 21, 2011, 05:31:09 AM
Same problem here.
Attempting to connect to slush's pool without success, just stays at starting for a bit and then connecting.

CPU Usage for the process stays at about 25%.

Console:
Listener for "Default" shutting down
Running command: poclbm.exe --user=***** --pass=***** -o mining.bitcoin.cz -p 8332 -d0 --verbose
Listener for "Default" started

OpenCL is also not detected, although a GTX260 is installed with the latest drivers.
