Why 42... is that supposed to mean something?

42 is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

this is very bullish news for the bitcoin market.

25  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / TradeHill - PLEASE fix your ticker ASAP on: June 22, 2011, 07:54:39 PM
https://api.tradehill.com/APIv1/USD/Ticker

Haven't been able to access your ticker for over 9 hours now, it just times out.   Many bitcoin merchants rely on a stable exchange and price ticker to set their product prices in bitcoin.

can you PLEASE fix this ticker asap?  Maybe put the api on a seperate server or host so it won't be slammed so much and be down all the time
26  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill - Who we are on: June 21, 2011, 10:20:55 AM
I cannot access https://api.tradehill.com/APIv1/USD/Ticker for the last 20 mins
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will be on the Peter Schiff Show 2011-06-20 at 10AM EDT on: June 20, 2011, 08:09:45 AM
I'd guess he'll be anti-bitcoin.  For one, he sells precious metals and would rather his listeners buy the gold and silver he sells than bitcoins.  Secondly, he's been on a sort of scam hunt of late, calling out pump-and-dumpers like the National Inflation Association, and might be wanting to add bitcoin to his 'scam list'
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Huge selloff + Ordering not possible on MtGox on: June 19, 2011, 06:07:17 PM
the market is screaming for a better exchange, this is crazy
29  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: MtGox ticker issues on: June 19, 2011, 05:34:14 PM
ugh...

now the ticker seems to be 'stuck' on $17.51  for "last"  on https://mtgox.com/code/data/ticker.php

even though bitcoins are trading in the $12.xx on mtgox.   wtf
30  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: MtGox ticker issues on: June 19, 2011, 04:53:25 AM
I'm having issues with a php/curl script I've been using to grab the mtgox ticker.  It was working fine and now it fails, I believe it is a problem with the ssl certificate.

whats up with that?  is there a cert problem for anyone else that popped up as of Saturday?

32  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Play Poker for BTC on Pokerstars on: June 14, 2011, 09:36:06 AM
problem I see would be collusion, chip dumping, multi-accounting, etc.  In real money games this leads to locked accounts and confiscated bankrolls.  In a play money game, there is no authority watching for this type of activity.  Even if they locked someone's play money account they can just open a new one, they wouldn't lose any real money. In a play money game, it would be easy to someone to make 8 accounts and buy in to 8 of the 9 available seats in a sit-and-go and virtually guarantee himself to win the 9th guy's money.

anyone following silverfuturist and davincij15 might be familiar with youtuber RawDog.
This guy claims to be an IT professional but the bitcoin disinformation he is spreading is laughable.

'bitcoin mining is for idiots'
'bitcoin mining is hackers paying you to crack bank algorithms'
'there are infinite number of bitcoins'   etc

34  Economy / Economics / Re: BTC Approaching Current Price of Silver on: June 10, 2011, 06:58:17 AM
And if you can buy an oz of silver for 1btc, then that makes 1btc worth 1 oz of silver.

indeed, such arbitrary comparisons can be made, as was pointed out already, you might as well example the bitcoin to xbox ratio or the bitcoin to hyundai ratio

I am speaking quantitatively, the ratio is rather arbitrary and meaningless.  It would be different if
a) bitcoins could be measured in troy ounces
b) there were an equal number of troy ounces of silver in the world as total number of bitcoins
or perhaps c) the market cap of the two are equal
35  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Zen Cart Bitcoin Payment Module on: June 10, 2011, 01:57:25 AM
Yo
I'ma let you finish...

but what I would consider doing is setting USD as default. Pricing things in terms of USD, updating just the BTC currency rate table at cron.  Then in your template header, set the $_SESSION['currency'] to bitcoin so it is the default.  This way you don't have to continually modify your script every time you add a new product.

nice, thanks again.  soon as I get some bitcoin I owe you a tip
36  Economy / Economics / Re: BTC Approaching Current Price of Silver on: June 10, 2011, 12:01:10 AM
agreed, you are comparing arbitrary unit sizes.  you can't measure bitcoin in troy ounces so its not a fair comparison

You can't measure USD in troy ounces either yet people price silver in USD.

yes, you can compare 1 oz silver/USD

but you cant expect the comparison (1 oz silver/USD) : (1 bitcoin/USD)  to be meaningful
37  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Zen Cart Bitcoin Payment Module on: June 09, 2011, 11:00:40 PM
thanks for the code!   I think what I could do is use this to get the exchange rate, and then just divide it by my static USD price, and update the prices in bitcoin terms via mysql
38  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Zen Cart Bitcoin Payment Module on: June 09, 2011, 10:26:04 PM
I just realized that as I have it setup, with products in zen cart priced in bitcoin and bitcoin shown as the prices on the storefront, I wouldn't be able to set a static price in, say, US dollars - I'd still have to constantly adjust the prices in bitcoin with the exchange rate.

is it possible to set a fixed price for zen cart products in one currency, but not actually use that currency as the default?
39  Economy / Economics / Re: BTC Approaching Current Price of Silver on: June 09, 2011, 10:21:37 PM
I'm thinking we are talking unit price not market cap.
1 troy oz Silver to 1 BTC.

I could be wrong. but .......

But that's comparing chickens to apples. You HAVE TO compare market capital in order to make a reasonable comparison. There's only 21 million bitcoins max and there are many more silver ounces.

I mean, you could also compare BTC price to... I don't know, perhaps horses. 1 Horse = 2000$, when are we going to reach the 1 horse/btc rate?

agreed, you are comparing arbitrary unit sizes.  you can't measure bitcoin in troy ounces so its not a fair comparison
40  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Zen Cart Bitcoin Payment Module on: June 09, 2011, 07:17:07 AM
I really want to get a semi-automated exchange rate setup for my zen cart store, especially with this recent bitcoin price volatility I'd like to run it at least once an hour.

I found a Zen Cart currency updater module here.

Run by cron, it fetches this XML file from the European Central Bank to get the current exchange rates, and repopulates the zen cart mysql database with the latest exchange rates.

Problem is of course, bitcoin exchange rates aren't listed on by the Euro Central Bank.

I see mtgox has this feed - https://mtgox.com/code/data/ticker.php

here's the code of the zen cart currency updater module.  now if I can figure out how to modify it to uses the mtgox feed...

Code:
#!/usr/bin/php
<?php
