21  Economy / Collectibles / Re: 2011 Casascius 1 BTC Holo Error on: February 26, 2014, 04:38:04 AM
Why do you ask 6-7 BTC for it when it says that it is 1 BTC? I am a bit confused.

Some Casascius coins are regarded collector's items. In particular, the 2011 Series 1 coins show a mispelling in the hologram (Casacius instead of CasaScius) and as a result production was stopped in favor of a Series 2 coin with the hologram spelled correctly.
22  Economy / Collectibles / 2011 Casascius 1 BTC Holo Error on: February 25, 2014, 08:09:31 PM
Lost a bunch of coins on MtGox recently. I know I deserved it. I know I should have seen it coming.
All this doesn't change the fact that I'm down and need to reel in some coins.

I'm willing to part with my baby, a 2011 S1 Holo Error. I was planning to mail it into ANACS but at this point it's probably better to sell.

Coin is in spetacular condition and ships inside coin holder. I accept usage of buyer's choice of escrow at his expenses. I have all documentation attesting its authenticity and am willing to answer any questions you may have via PM.

I'm looking to get 6-7 BTC (BTC price is lower than what it was months ago) but am willing to entertain offers. PM me if interested.

Ethereum would allow you to place transactions that work as contacts allowing people to place sell and buy orders directly on the "blockchain". A third party website could offer the service of indexing all such transactions in real time for users to take advantage of them but wouldn't technically be necessary.

30  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Is this MtGox's NTXID testing in action??? on: February 21, 2014, 07:20:41 PM
Thanks to DataVeteran's twitter page (https://twitter.com/Datavetaren), I've stumbled on the following link:

https://data.mtgox.com/api/0/bitcoin_tx.php

It shows a bunch of mtgox blockchain submissions. They all include the new transaction ID constructed by Sipa and Krapeles as disussed extensively on the GitHub thread (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/3656).

Copy/Pasting the NTXID field in blockchain.info gives a series of transactions happening over the course of the past couple days. If I understand correctly this is the testing they announced they would be doing.

Not all NTXID seem to work. This might imply that not all test transactions are going through properly and, thus, the system isn't fully ready for primetime action. If this were the case, the freeze on all withdrawals could be deemed appropriate.

https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/3656

As a result, as currency deflates, the ultra rich find themselves holding excess wealth whose utility is of small effective value.

How can you think that when there is evidence all around us of what "ultra rich" do? They control media and therefore public opinion, they control government and therefore public policy. When quality of life is no longer an issue, it becomes about power. There is no magic spell that makes this work differently in bitcoin. If ultra rich are induced to spend more, what do they spend it on?

I agree with you LX. The one difference here though is that the ultra rich cannot hoard by taking advantage of special federal reserve-type handouts. They start with an immense amount of wealth that, through deflation, grows in value over time. This implies that anything they spend will ultimately be more useful to the worker over time than to them. Unless they can manipulate the price of bitcoin en-masse to buy it back at a lower price, the worker will be getting paid with something that guarantees greater value over time.

Deflation pushes the ultra-rich utility curve to flatten out and, as a result, they should spend more. What will the spend more on? Obtaining power is a very good guess. The big difference is that this will most likely be political power as opposed to financial power since there won't be any currency to manipulate.

I guess the main point I'm trying to hone in on is the following:
A) How much power is effectively a result of the manipulation of a currency's value?
B) How much can bitcoin be actively manipulated by the bitcoin ultra rich in a hypothetical bitcoin economy?

The site should be run how doog says it should be run, no more and no less. If he wants to take an informal poll of investors to help guide his decision, that's fine, but the so-called "investors" are not in charge. And quite frankly, I'm glad they're not, judging by so many of the hairbrained schemes that come up on here.

Amen.

It is certainly true that Doog could simply say "If you don't like it, then leave." However my, possibly mistaken, impression has been that Doog cares deeply about the proper functioning of his site. This incudes investor concerns; where "investor" was a word chosen by Doog himself. I don't see any harm discussing with Doog ideas for improvements we deem necessary. In many cases, Doog has thought about many "investor" issues way ahead of investor concerns and has figured out the optimal way of handling them. This doesn't mean that Doog couldn't profit from the use of a public forum where his brain gets picked and he may the opportunity to speak up publically outside a trollbox.
39  Economy / Economics / Re: Inflation and Deflation of Price and Money Supply on: February 07, 2014, 05:18:26 AM
Interesting, so I agree the divisibility of the currency itself is not a problem. Even the bit-wise convenient satoshi*10^-3 is more than enough.
Do you think the need for massive deflation for bitcoin when successful adoption of the coin *occurs*, is being hampered by the current distribution of the money supply? Simply put, everybody on bitcointalk (owning some coins) now are the future miljonairs? The rich in bitcoin now, are going to buy their own countries?

Does it really seem feasible to expect such a sudden shift of wealth?

No, with deflation I would think the shift in wealth to be minimal. The utility curve of money for individuals flattens out for larger wealths. As an example, the difference in net wealth of 100 million vs. 10 billion has the potential to change the actual quality of life by an amount which is much less than the difference between 10k vs. 100k. As a result, as currency deflates, the ultra rich find themselves holding excess wealth whose utility is of small effective value.

In a deflationary economy, wouldn't the ultra rich be induced to spend more since their wealth is less useful" to their own quality of life over time?

My original post was ignored so I'll bump.

Would it be possible to implement a failsafe for the cold wallet. Something where the top 5-10 investors can put together a passphrase made out of their individual passwords and dump the cold wallet to the safety wallets of ALL the site's investors??

I saw your original post, didn't know how to respond, put it off, then forgot about it.  Sorry.

I've been asked for this kind of thing before.  The previous suggestion was to regularly issue timelocked transactions paying the top investors their balance.  There's some feature of Bitcoin where you can set a transaction to only be valid after some point in time.  When I run 'decoderawtransaction' on a transaction I see "locktime" : 0, which I'm guessing would be different for a timelocked transaction.

The problems with that scheme are:

1) Investor balances change every second.  I guess I'd have to make the transaction for some amount under the investor's balance.

2) I'd have to keep moving the cold wallet coins around before the date on the timelocked transaction to invalidate the transaction in the event that I'm not dead yet (or whatever).  I try not to be accessing the cold wallet too often.

I'm unclear of the details of zipmaster's proposed scheme.  How does it allow funds to be returned after I'm dead but not before?

you just need a multi-signature wallet and share the keys to trusted people( maybe a laywer etc.)  then if you are unavailable then the wallet is unlocked by consensus and the funds released to all the investors.  I am guessing you keep a backed up list of investors somewhere?

Or.... you could have a precompiled script that runs all necessary transactions returning the investor's bitcoins to the emergency addresses. Every time that you shuffle the cold wallet around this script could be automatically updated with all the correct investor amounts. Last but not least, it should be possible to activate the script via investor consensus somehow.
