For the price, they better be fantastic cables lol. Really these are more aimed at enterprise-class operations where uptime and longevity are key. With mining, we are pushing the limits of the hardware and often breaking it in the process. However, it would be nice if Cablesaurus added longer cables. I suppose you could plug one cable into the other though.

$100 for a 12" cable? I'm seeing that right, right?
23  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Has anyone tried 9mart's pcie extender cables? on: June 30, 2011, 06:21:33 PM
what about this?

Ships from Hong Kong with an ETA of 19 days. Cablesaurus got me my package in less than a business week. This is a good deal if you know what you are doing with bitcoin mining almost a month from now. wait...

25  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Designing Bitcoin Case from the Ground Up on: June 30, 2011, 08:29:52 AM
We did a few rough sketches about a month back (If I had my scale I could have done much better). I'll see if I can get them from him and double check the measurements, but I'm pretty sure It will fit in a 4U. The main thing in the way is the heatsink for the cpu. We didn't have a sempron since we used two motherboards we already had, but we estimated with another stock heatsink and it fit. If this is a problem, you can find a cheap low-profile sink on newegg. Other than that, the cards only need to be just taller than the peripheral outputs on the back of the motherboard.

For two power supplies, just put one on the left and one on the right in the back of the case. We didn't really look into dual power supplies because the card we use (can afford) was the 5830 and each one uses about 200W each (OC'd) so we would buy a 1000W PSU for 4 of these or a ~1500W for 6. We looked into a motherboard that could support 6 cards, but this was a substantial price jump, $170 vs $80. so we just panned on doing 4 cards in a case. Gives them plenty of room to breathe anyway. If you were to use more than 3 dual gpu card, 5970 or 6990, then you would be forced to use two PSU's. At that point you would need a separate breaker for each 1500W PSU!

I'll have more details when I get the old plans. PM me if you want to talk more/let me help/have me consult. I'd love to since we never got to build it ourselves Smiley
26  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Did eBay BIN 58** and 6990 cards all just disappear? on: June 30, 2011, 12:33:33 AM
ehh, I'd only recommend it now if you can snipe a decent mining card off Newegg and have an open slot for it/upgrading and selling the old card. Even then, you better have another use for it.

eBay is acting up right now. If you do other searches, you will see that it doesn't pull up anything. Sucks for the people who's auction is ending right now...

Edit: working again.

If you were to power your laptop alone with solar power, you are going to need about 150W of solar panels. This will adequately charge the battery while the sun is putting out it's ideal power and cover efficiency loss. The panels plus their charge controllers alone will run you hundreds. (eBay is borked right now so I'll add better price estimate later) You need a deep cycle battery of decent size for this. Do NOT get a car or starter battery. You will ruin those in a short amount of time. Amp hours are your friend here and cranking amps aren't needed for this. The battery + inverter will be another $100. I got a 400W inverter off Newegg on a sale for $20. Expect $10 per 100W normally though. Pure sine wave is an added cost, but you don't need it for what you are doing.

Making your own power is cool and all, but you have to realize that when it comes to solar panels, there is no such thing as low cost. If you are trying to save money, look somewhere else. You will end up paying more for these parts to produce the electricity than you will in electricity from the utility. I pay $2.00 a day for my rigs, but am making $15 a day. My electricity rate is $0.101 per kwh. What's your's?

Also, please, use proper grammar and spell check when writing large blocks of text. People will be kinder.

A friend of a friend of mine can bend sheet metal so my mining friend and I came up with a design. The case would be a standard sized 19" 4U rackmount case. It could fit 4 high ends cards comfortably or 6 cheaper, lower powered ones. The cards would be situated above the motherboard at a height just above the stock sempron heatsink. For cooling, the back should be able to fit 3 120mm fans with the power supply oriented vertically or 6-7 80mm fans depending on the PSU. of course, this fan takes care of all your problems: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835706015

We never ended up making it since the availability of good cheap cards ran out *cough5830cough*
31  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: heat recycling on: June 29, 2011, 10:18:34 PM
A good idea, but those are designed to run at 100C+. That would destroy your card unfortunately. I've had a fun idea for some time where I would water cool my computer and use my water heater as a large reservoir. Every time the dishwasher/shower/washing machine ran it would replenish the cold water. The two systems would be separated with a heat exchange of course.

The problem is newegg doesn't restock at 12:01 pst. They update their stock randomly. I purchased 2 5830's yesterday at 7 pm est and it was only in stock for 10 mins. A week or two ago I got two and they were in stock from 1 to 2 pm est. My point being you'll basically have to spend the whole July 4th holiday spent near a computer to guarantee you purchase one lol.[/quote]

I didn't realize they put it out at a random time. Well that sucks.

Yeesh and the $119 version is now $129!

I saw that too. Newegg must have looked at ebay lol.

Should build a screen scraper that e-mails you when they are in. Then sell subscriptions  Tongue

I see potential here...
34  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Newegg 5830 on: June 29, 2011, 06:53:46 PM
Naw, I'm not waiting on one. I'll see if I can snag one and turn around and sell it on ebay Wink Come 12:01 AM PST, Newegg will be sold out. again.
35  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Newegg 5830 on: June 29, 2011, 06:31:39 PM
Newegg has a ETA for more Sapphire 5830 stock on July 4th. Just an FYI.

$110

Have fun.
36  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: Which OS do you use? on: June 29, 2011, 12:39:36 AM
I primarily use Ubuntu on my netbook and have win7 for when I want to watch Netflix. Before my desktop died (ran the cpu and gpu miner at the same time and blew my small 460 Watt PSU which took my motherboard with it >.<) I mostly used win7 and occasionally ran ubuntu.
37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cracked Passwords List Leaked, were you cracked? on: June 28, 2011, 11:44:43 PM
Sweet! I'm not there! I used an 8-character long password with uppercase, lowercase, and numbers. Foolishly, I set other bitcoin-related passwords to the same one. As soon as I saw the news, I changed every site to a different 15-character long password with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Now I should apply this to RL...
38  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: FREE BITCOINS -- Environmentally conscious mining! on: June 28, 2011, 07:55:13 PM
For me, electricity takes up about 10% or more of our profits. One of my friend's dad in our collective mining operation (a whopping 1Ghash) is currently working on getting a wind turbine up and running. The original goal of the turbine was to power his beer chiller in his barn. It might eventually power our rigs. He recently added a gear ratio to get the generator up to the proper RPM. But unfortunately, the mounting was not strong enough and severely damaged all three of the blades. (when he was testing it, he was using blades a company lent his to try them out. $200 right there. ouch.)

He works at a local telecommunications company and when they upgraded their old telephone system, they let him take their 24v battery array off their hands - for free. Each of these batteries weigh in around 300 lbs and there are twelve of them. They have a 20-25 year lifespan and are only about 5 years old. I've tried to get him to understand that his battery bank is way larger than most people use for his setup.

*reading up on Rossi Catalyzer*
The idea looks good. Definitely much better than previous low-energy nuclear reactions. If they could demonstrate a device using this method that would power itself as well as other devices, then they could legitimize themselves a bit more. As far as the scope of the this thread is concerned, this technology is out of reach for home/DIY use. If they ever did make a reasonably priced, self-contained power and hot water generator, I'd buy it.
39  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: need help in identifyin a converter cable. on: June 23, 2011, 05:20:09 AM
I remember seeing that unit a while back. I'm pretty sure that is a proprietary power connector. I doubt you will find that in radio shack, but it's worth a try. Bring in the psu and show them what you are looking for. Your best bet though is to contact Epower and tell them you need a power connector.

I had considered that unit if I got more cards and kept the same power supply. IMO, the 20% 1 egg reviews is too high; I'm more comfortable in the less than 8% 1-egg review range. I just don't want to deal with a bad psu again.

Spray some water in it and wipe it down with a damp cloth.

I usually hose mine down. Its easier.
