21  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: June 10, 2011, 08:00:21 PM
sorry but i dont really have any idea what any of that means... im coming from a mac background a week of mining with windows and i dont want that anymore so trying linuxcoin out

does this have anything to do with the install on the USB memory stick?

also what is the root password on this install?  i tried to save a file to a partition on the drive but it would not let me because i did not have access.

the password for SSH in the first post here didnt work

also how do change the date and time?
22  Bitcoin / Mining / linux GUI miners? on: June 10, 2011, 07:56:10 PM
is there any GUI miner for linux?

i am trying to get linuxcoin to work and i keep getting this error when i try to start a miner from the command line.

Exception in thread Thread-2:

the rest of it seems to be working great, i just cant get the miners to start.

23  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 2x 6870 - what are your settings? on: June 10, 2011, 07:49:37 PM

I was getting the same before I cleaned up the KVM disaster and added the crossfire bridge cables.

what OS and miner are you running.  and what manufacture are the GPU's ?

XFX HD 5870 x2 no crossfire
Windows 7 x64
phoenix miner with phatk kernel with params -k phatk DEVICE=1 BFI_INT VECTORS AGGRESSION=11 FASTLOOP=false WORKSIZE=256
AMD GPU clock tweak tool manually tweaking to 939Mhz clock, 343Mhz Memory, stock voltage.
Seeing 420MH/s at 65 degreesC atm... might push the clock speed higher...

W

are you using 5870's or 6870's?

i dont think 6870's can hit 4xx Mh no matter what you do

i am using a USB stick, this is the first time i have tried linux and cant figure out how to get the miners started, everythin gelse seems to be working great, it has to be the fastest and easiest install of an OS ever, i just cat get the miners running

is there a GUI to get miners started for linux?  seems insane i have to type in all my account, server, flags, etc.. for each miner every time i want to get this started.  what takes me 10 min of typing in archaic strings of text takes me 1 second in windows  to start up an app.

(i do not want to run windows anymore so i am trying to learn this stuff)

thanks

nice graphic

that should be posted on the hardware comparison wiki page.

yes
27  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Downclocking 6970 Memory! on: June 09, 2011, 10:55:51 PM

Still won't bring the clock down enough. Also MSI afterburner doesn't have any power options for me so when I use it the Mhash rate goes way down to 311 instead of 406.

I did this with my 6870 cards and set them to 300 in MSI afterburner but as soon as i start mining the graphs on the right (if you scroll down you will see the memory clock graph) it spikes to 1050 (stock clock).  as soon as i shut off the miners it drops to 300

anyone know how i can get the card to run at 300 while at full load?
28  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why does everyone want the 5830s? on: June 09, 2011, 10:46:11 PM
also consider the power cost of the cards, heat generated and fan noise.  the 5830 supposedly can pull 200+ watts each  the 6870 cards can easily hit 280Mh without underclocking mem, cost about 180 bucks and use about 160w (with stock memory/core clocks).  if you space them apart a bit they only run at 70º when overclocked to 975 and the fans at 60%

if you only have a few cards in a machine it wont make much of a difference but if you have 4+ cards on a motherboard it starts to add up (more wattage every day, more expensive power supplies, more heat, more fan noise/ more power to the fans, etc)

29  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Did a Linux live CD ever happen? I'd buy that for a Bitcoin. on: June 09, 2011, 10:10:42 PM
dont put your wallet on the same machine as you mine on.  generally people are pushing the limits of these machines already storing the wallet on a machine that could easily catch fire, break down from heat, blow a power supply is not that smart even if you do back up regularly.

also better be sure you have the USB stick properly set up or any file you save wont be there when you restart the machine

32  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BTC Guild - 0% Fees, Long polling, SSL, JSON API, and more [~750 gH/sec] on: June 09, 2011, 12:00:10 AM
It's not wasting a day of mining you geniuses. If its wasting a day of mining then solo mining is an even bigger waste. So if I went and solo mined right now and managed to hit a block, what a waste that would be.

Google the word "variance" you incredibly smart people

its a waste when there are other pools that have had no such bad luck like btcguild has in the past 24 hours.. look a the last 15 blocks, they have gone WAY up since the server switch.

im not bailing out just wondering if they are somehow connected.
33  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BTC Guild - 0% Fees, Long polling, SSL, JSON API, and more [~750 gH/sec] on: June 08, 2011, 11:31:12 PM
closing in on a 5 hour 3 million + share round.

this seems rather strange since it happened just after the 2 server upgrade.

but yes you have basically wasted half a day of mining.

went from 4-500gh last week to 7-800gh today and the times it takes to find a block have quadrupled.  this really does not make any sense

I am at about 2500 shares (20 stale) and an estimated payout of .041
34  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BTC Guild - 0% Fees, Long polling, SSL, JSON API, and more [~750 gH/sec] on: June 08, 2011, 09:08:59 PM
does the really long rounds for the past 12 hours or so have anything to do with the server switch?  im not making anything on btcguild compared to the past week, even with the random connection issues that we had over the past  few days that seem to be solved since the upgrade.

I would like to stick around but not really sure what is going on or if its a string of bad luck...  the pool has about 250+Gh more than the average for the past week or so and i would think that blocks would be found 1/3 faster than before.

35  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: June 07, 2011, 06:29:50 AM
what do i put in for a kernel when it asks?

i am trying to start a phoenix session with a 6870 card and these flags
VECTORS BFI_INT BIT_ALIGN FASTLOOP=false AGGRESSION=12

i have only used the mac versions and windows GUI versions of bitcoin mining so i dont really know any of this stuff
i tried typing in phatk but that doesnt seem to do anything.

the window flashes for a second then takes me back to menu
36  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: psu for 3 6870 cards on: June 06, 2011, 09:02:14 PM
i have read everything up to 254 watts at full load.

this says 254watts
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/xfx_radeon_hd_6870_review

this says 247watts
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/10/22/ati-radeon-hd-6870-review/9

this says 163watts
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_6870/27.html

hence the confusion

any harm in plugging them all in and trying it out?

37  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: psu for 3 6870 cards on: June 06, 2011, 08:48:15 PM
that calculator tells me that i need a 363 watt power supply with a dual card setup

i would be scared to turn that machine on
38  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: psu for 3 6870 cards on: June 06, 2011, 08:07:37 PM
thanks what kind of processor did you have on that machine?  any idea on the efficiency of the 580w PSU?

from searching around it looks like these cards might pull 250 watts at full load but i am not sure about that.

the rest of the components i have are about as low wattage as i could find i think.  I am probably going to ditch the hard drive and use a USB thumb drive

39  Bitcoin / Mining / psu for 3 6870 cards on: June 06, 2011, 06:59:43 PM
i want to get these graphics cards out of my main machine into a mining rig and put this together will an 850w PSU be ok?

i have these already
3x  6870 xfx GPU

this is what i was going to buy
ASRock 870 EXTREME3
OCZ ZX Series 850W Fully-Modular 80PLUS Gold
2x     Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066
AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz
Seagate Barracuda 500GB

putting it all in a ghetto aluminum rack, ordered 2 pci extenders so i can space the cards apart and keep them cool

what kind of PSU would i need if i were to add a 4th card in the same range as the 6870's that i have already?
