21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC on: January 24, 2014, 09:54:01 PM
lol new problem: cgminer won't start. doesn't matter which settings or which cgminer version... think I will use that card for gaming rather than mining <.<'

You need to reinstall your drivers(again, I'm sure).

I am still wrestling with my 4x 290 Tri-x OCs.

have removed drivers, and installed new. nothing changes, cgminer won't start and gpu load is always 0%.

Do a full power drain; Shut down the system, unplug the PSU and hold the power button in to discharge the board. If it still won't start when you turn it back on it can be a few things.

Either you need to reinstall the drivers(look up how to fully remove the existing software before reinstalling).
You are lacking enough system RAM for the thread concurrency(try setting it to an intensity of 13 and TC of 8192 just to see if it starts. If it does start, you need more ram to run full power)
Or worst-case, you might have something corrupted in your BIOS or GPU firmware(unlikely, but possible).

Ollie, what's your hardware setup? Do you have a monitor plugged into the card you're trying to mine with?

My first suggestion would be to do a full power drain. Shut down the PC, turn off the PSU, unplug it and hold the power button in for a few seconds to discharge your system. Plug it back in, turn on the PSU and boot the system. It should work. (My system has had that problem after hardware errors or dead cards from overclocking too much.)

If it doesn't, you want to eliminate as many factors as possible. If you have it on a riser, plug it directly into the MoBo for testing.

You also want to check your power settings and make sure that you don't have your card set to idle when it's not in use.
Some cards will go into idle mode when they're not "in use" and will only get about 10% of the hash power that they should be getting normally.
(However, this is probably not your issue.)

The RAM was the solution to(one of) my problems. But I am running in a Windows environment, not Linux.

25  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 5 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC setup! on: January 24, 2014, 07:55:06 PM
I just picked up 4 of these cards myself.

You will probably need a very high-end PSU to run them(1600W minimum) or have a dual PSU setup since they're overclocked.

They run hot. I would not recommend putting more than 2 on a MoBo without risers.

I recommend powered risers. I had a lot of hardware errors with unpowered risers.

Try uninstalling then re-installing the catalyst driver, unchecking all other weird programs it tries to install (including the catalyst control center), only selecting the VGA driver if possible.  Then run gpu-z to see your clocks, or afterburner to try overclocking.

Hey bob. What are the actual *required* option in the AMD catalyst package installation for mining? I was look at it last night because I'm running into some problems and it occurred to me that there seems to be a lot of fluff that comes along with the drivers and OpenCL software for Windows.

I am running 4x R9 290s and I had to upgrade from 4GB to 16GB to get it to run at all.

The thread concurrency for the 290s  and 290x is usually over 30000 so you need a lot of RAM for the initial startup. Once it starts, RAM doesn't matter any more.

A way to test this is to set your thread concurrency really low to see if it starts properly. Maybe something around 8192 to start. If everything starts up that way but not when you set it to the default concurrency(30592 for mine), you need more RAM.

Thanks. I picked up 8GB over lunch and will add it this evening to see just how much I need. I'm hoping 8GB is enough, but will scale to 12 then 16 until I get it working. I heard somewhere that I cannot find now, 2GB/card usually works. Looks like I just have an evening full of playing with a rig ahead of me.

I would say that you probably would want to have your RAM resources equal to at least half of your GPU resources for startup. If you want to be really safe, I would have it as 1 to 1.

I think the 290s are 4GB cards so you'd want 20GB total to run everything with lots of leg room. You could try a 2x8 and 2x4 for a total of 24GB.

My rig right now is at the 1gig RAM:1Gig GPU speed and since upgrading I have had no problems running the max concurrency.
28  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Problem with ASUS R9 290 on: January 24, 2014, 07:08:50 PM
The intensity setting can effect how many shares you submit through pool mining depending on the difficulty of the coin.

Those pool stats are calculated based on your share rate, not your actual hashes per second.

Whats your ratio of accepted, rejected and hardware errors in cgminer?

Try this thread if your computer isn't recognizing a new GPU.

Edit: Sorry just saw that you said you shouldn't need a shorting pin for this Mobo. It could be a problem with the card. Try switching the old one out for the new one and see if it's recognized. If your computer sees the new card and mines on it just fine, you might have to try the jumper or you could have a problem with the PCIE slot on the MoBo or the riser.

Just curious, but how much ram did you need?

I'm try to get a rig of 5 cards up and running. I initially bought 4 GB and have more on the way. Wondering if 8/16/32 is required for 5 cards. Right now I have 2 up and running with low intensity just to have something hashing. Hoping 8GB for 5 cards will be enough, but anyone's input would be appreciated.

Edit: Running ASUS R9 290 cards if it matters.

GSkill Ripjaw 4GB ram

EDIT: You should also find out what your default thread concurrency is for your cards, it can vary from card to card. The way to check this is to delete all your .bin files from your cgminer folder and start up cgminer with no thread concurrency number set(just delete the field from your config file or set to 0). Once cgminer starts running, stop the process and look at the newly created .bin file. It will have a number in it's name that gives you the default max thread concurrency for your card. If you set it higher than that, prepare to get hardware errors and rejected shares.

I went through the same mission with that motherboard.  After weeks of hairpulling I came across the solution.  You need to do this to the two slots marked PCIEX8.

Hope I was able to help Smiley

I haven't had any problems with my GPUs being detected. They're always there in the device manager. I think this solution is for when a MoBo isn't seeing a GPU at all, isn't it?
32  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Problem with 1X to 16X riser cables - looking for advice. on: January 24, 2014, 04:41:57 PM
Thanks guys. I'll look into that.

For the time being I have reduced my rigs to only 4 cards each. I may just buckle down and run a third rig to use all the cards I have available right now. All I would need is another MOBO and CPU, I have everything else. It would probably be simpler/more stable that way anyway but a little more up front cost.

Since I posted this message I have had problem after problem with these rigs. I've had 2 days of downtime now and this is getting ridiculous.

I can't seem to get anything to be stable. My rig with 4x Sapphire R9 270x USED to be rock solid, now GPU 3 goes SICK after only a couple minutes. I'm running CG watcher so it restarts the mining process then after about 4 restarts it will die completely, attempt to restart the rig and then everything hangs.

My rig with the 4x Sapphire R9 290s is even worse. I have tried every compatible driver from AMD and I have been unable to get anything to be stable. I would list the problems but I don't have that much time. My biggest concern right now is that my BIOS has reported as corrupted 3 times now and rebuilt itself.

Do you think there's a problem with the AMD drivers and the version of CGminer I'm using? I know that my drivers are newer than my miner so maybe something was changed that cgminer can't handle?

Where can I get older drivers for the R9 290s?
33  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Problem with 1X to 16X riser cables - looking for advice. on: January 23, 2014, 06:55:42 PM
I've tried installing different drivers. According to the AMD site, Catalyst 13.12 is the "current" for both the HD 7970 and R9 290.

When I attempted to install older versions I was unable to mine on the R9 290s because either the driver version was incorrect or there was an installation problem.

I tried versions 13.9, 13.11 and 13.12 and couldn't get any of them to really work properly. I'm not sure that going back to 12.XX is an option because I don't know what is/isn't compatible with the 290s.

If windows is reading the card correctly in the device manager(Radeon HD 7970 instead of the generic "VGA Adapter" it reads before drivers are installed) I presume that means it's not necessarily a driver issue.

Is it possible that there's a problem with the 1x to 16x risers on this configuration?

As above, windows 7 64 Bit clean.

Hey all, I recently expanded my mining rigs to add another 4 cards to my setup. I was previously running 2 rigs with a total of 7 cards(4 and 3) and purchased 4 of the Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OCs.

My MOBO is the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 which is supposed to have no problem with 5 or 6 cards installed. I have the 4 290s on 16x to 16x risers and 2 7970s on 1x to 16x risers. I am installing ADM Catalyst 13.12 which seems to be the only version that works with the Tri-X OC and I have tried CGMiner ver. 3.5 and 3.7.2, same result. I am running Windows 7 x64.

My computer boots just fine, the drivers are the same for these and everything reads but I get an error on the 1x to 16x cards. (Error 43) in the device manager so I can't mine with them.

I have a 1300 Watt PSU and the 1x to 16x risers are powered. I can't figure out why these cards are being disabled by windows when the PC boots in.

I am expanding my system RAM this evening to 16 Gig because I know that it's lacking but I have a feeling that expanding the RAM isn't going to solve this problem. Anyone have any ideas?

If you are mining this coin you are WASTING YOUR HASHES.

See previous comments that did the actual math on this coin and you'll see that it will be OVER SIXTY YEARS before this coin is mined enough by the public to equal the premine amount.

Use your heads people.

39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Selling 40k QQC on: January 20, 2014, 12:17:57 AM
I have 40,000 QQC for sale for 1 BTC for all of them. My price is firm.
I am aware that this is below current sale value(which is currently rising) at Coined Up but I don't want to crash the price with a sale this size so I prefer to do it privately.

I am a trusted trader on these boards and I am willing to do the trade in intervals or through an escrow.

Please send a PM if you are interested, thanks!
