I think the wallet only displays hashes when mining WITH the CPU-miner of the wallet.

I do all the steps and the cgminer says that "Pool 0 slow/down or URL or credentials invalid". Try the config from zachamo and try the URL he posted for cgminer (after the switch -o, http://localhost:22566/). Are you sure the username and password in the config and the commandline for cgminer match? Have you restarted your wallet after changing the config?

I think Bitcoin will rise steadily 2014. People needed the money for Christmas and new year so that's the cause of the crash in my opinion. Unless another big news will come for bitcoin (like the US bans the use of it or something like that) it is not going to crash and be worthless.
