21  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Several questions about GPU mining - R9 280x on: December 30, 2013, 11:51:53 AM
I use that board with 7970's. It shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you use flexible cable risers with a a separate 12v molex. You don't want to draw power through the motherboard if you will be running more than 2 cards. Consumer grade boards are not made to deliver 75 watts per card through the pcie interface. FOr a genric 300 watt card you should get approximately 225 watts in from the pcie plugs and the other 75 watts from the 12v line on the flexible riser.

With regard to decreasing speeds and slot type, it doesn't matter. 1x pcie is all that's needed for mining with any gpu. You can plug a 1x -> 16x cable riser into any pcie slot and it will function fine.

firmware: These days, it's not too risky unless you lose power. However, you always run the risk of bricking a card and may have to rma it. SO have a good reason to flash. DOn't just do it because you think the newest firmware is the best.

I tried one of the add2psu modules with 2x 1600 watt psu's. It was a no go for me. One psu registered an error led when it was connected. The add2psu device isn't compatible with alot of higher end psu's that have advanced fault protection features. Best advice I can give you is to avoid that gimmicky stuff.

Thanks for the answers. I have a few followup questions.

1. Is there any difference between 280x cards from different brands? Can I expect the same performance / reliability / stability from 280x cards by different companies?

2. Can I use multiple 280x from different brands in one rig? If yes, will they need to be configured separately, for all of them to reach max potential?

3. Which brand's 1600W PSU do you use? Also, how do people use 5 or even 6 GPUs in their rigs with a single power supply?

4. What difference can I expect if I decide to go with Windows 7 instead of Linux, as the OS in my rig? I really want to stick to Linux, but most brands have Windows based tools to under-volt / over-clock cards without having to mess with the BIOS.
22  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Several questions about GPU mining - R9 280x on: December 30, 2013, 10:29:24 AM
Hey everyone. I'm about to build my first mining rig this week, and have several hardware related questions.

1. Is anyone currently using multiple MSI R9 280x cards with ASRock 970 Extreme 4 motherboard? I've read that they should be compatible, but I've also read some reports about people having issues with compatibility.

2. Most motherboards which have multiple PCI-e slots, provide decreasing speeds like 1 slot- x16, 1 slot- x8, 1 slot- x4 etc. Does this impact mining performance? I have yet to come across any motherboard which provides x16 speed on all slots.

3. How safe is flashing a GPU's BIOS? Apparently, its required for under-volting cards when working on linux, but I'm concerned about the possibility of killing the cards.

4. Has anyone ever used Add2PSU (http://www.add2psu.com/) to connect multiple PSUs in one rig? Are these things safe to use? A 1200W PSU is very expensive, and may not support 4 to 5 cards, however, connecting two 860W PSUs can definitely solve the problem.

Sure. No problem. Let me know if you change your mind. As I mentioned previously, Barrack is more complex than it seems. I don't think you'll be able to get it developed in 1 BTC. I'm willing to negotiate on the price if we can discuss on the list of features you want.
25  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Solo mining scrypt coins on: December 29, 2013, 08:52:33 AM
1) Yes - the higher the difficulty the more energy (ie hashing) must be spent trying to solve the block
2) New coins will usually not have a pool ready since they will be... new.  Not too many people know how to properly set up a pool and would dedicate resources to it without it having any merit.  Solo mining is the only option then.  If there's a pool setup for a coin, it's probably better to pool mine that coin.
3) If some new alt comes out you can try solo mining it on day 1.  Ultimately you're chasing a gimmick 99% of the time (by history).

Thanks for the answers. Suppose I read about a coin which isn't new, yet the difficulty is very low. Pools do exist for this coin, which have collected anywhere between 30 MH/s to 500 MH/s. In such a case, would there be any situation in which solo mining is better than pool mining?
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: GPU mining for alt coins with R9 280x cards on: December 29, 2013, 08:12:00 AM
I've read that the power consumption can go by over 40W per card, by under-volting them. On a rig that is to run 24/7, that will translate into significant power savings.

However, my biggest concern is whether or not I'll be able to safely run 4 280x cards on a 1200W PSU. In some places, I've read that a 280x at full power will not take more than 250W, but in other places, I've read that they can consume as much as 400W each. :-/
27  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Solo mining scrypt coins on: December 29, 2013, 07:54:42 AM
I have a couple of questions related to solo mining scrypt based coins.

1. Does the chances of discovering a block depend upon your hashing power?

2. When a coin is relatively new, the difficulty is quite low. At this point, is it better to solo mine that coin, or just join a pool?

3. I don't have huge hashing power at my disposal. Just one 1.4 MH/s mining rig. However, when a new coin comes up that I'm interested in, and when the number of people mining it is low, is it feasible to mine it solo?
28  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / GPU mining for alt coins with R9 280x cards on: December 29, 2013, 07:34:50 AM
Hey everyone,

I'm currently building a GPU mining rig with two MSI R9 280x cards, and was wondering if anyone here knows how to under-volt them?

I'll be running them on a linux system, so I can't use the utilities provided by MSI.

I will eventually add two more cards to this rig, so I need to reduce the power-draw per card. I'm putting a 1200W PSU on this rig.

Looking forward to your replies.

Cheers!
29  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 1250w PSU good enough for 4x280x on: December 29, 2013, 07:28:26 AM
From my testing each 280x uses 250w at max load (mining) so you should be fine.

Were you undervolting your cards, or were they running at stock configuration?

Some pci raisers might be needed there to get some space between the cards otherwise it will run on the hot end even with a fan.

Other than that it looks good. You thought about pools or coins yet??

Yeah. I should be able to get enough spacing between the cards with up to 2 cards (1st and 3rd PCIe slots). I'll order the raisers when I plan to add more. Do you agree, or would you recommend the raisers even with 2 cards? In any case, I won't need them now since it will be a month at least, till I get my second card. So I have some time to order them. I'll have to get them from China. I don't think they are available locally.

I've decided that I'll spend the first month manually switching pools based on readings from coinwars and other such listing websites. This should give me some experience, as well as a brief idea about the earning potential. I'll distribute my mining between some low difficulty coins like Doge, World, Meme, etc., then trade on an exchange against LTC or BTC. Doge seems to be going strong for now, so I might even hold on to some of them.

I'll give middlecoin and some of the other auto-switching pools a shot, and compare the performance against the first month results.

By this time, ideally, I should be in a position to upgrade my system again and rework my strategy.

What do you think?
32  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What kind of rig should I use for mining? on: December 28, 2013, 10:57:47 AM
Thanks for fast and best reply
I will try to assemble accordingly
as your best information howmany time could it take for ROI Ie. Todays price of Bitcoin is 700$

You should not use this rig to mine BTC directly. That would take a long time (decades, I think), with the rising difficulty.

You should be mining scrypt based coins like LTC or others.

Take a look at any of the following links. Enter 2100 kHashes/sec in the scrypt textboxes, and they will give you an upper estimate of your earnings.

http://coinwarz.com

http://dustcoin.com

http://wheretomine.com/

http://coinchoose.com/

The value of these alt coins can be very volatile, so you may want to get familiar with these tables, and switching between coins when it increases your profitability. If you don't want to handle that manually, you can look into an auto-switching pool like http://middlecoin.com

After the raid, what happens to the user's coins?
The government takes it all??

I don't know what happened to the website owner's personal coins, but the company had already stopped all orders a few days before the raid, and all pending orders had been executed. So none of the website users lost any money.

I don't think anyone has actually been arrested. The exchange office was raided in a surprise move, so as to determine the true nature of the company's operation. It may very well be that nothing comes out of this.

Although, there has been no activity on any of the company's social channels. One would expect something like this to garner some social media attention, but either it hasn't, or its all being removed. Its also possible that the company turned out to be a real scam.

Quote
At present, we believe that this is a violation of foreign exchange regulations of the country. If we are able to establish money laundering aspect then he can be arrested

In any case, the above line clearly states that the website owner has not been arrested.

Now looking really into the second one , it is urgent!

Hello.

I'm a freelance web and mobile application developer. I'm interested in discussing the project further with you. Barrack is a very extensive website, with many intricacies. I'll need 2 months to develop the website and 1 month to test it. I'll charge you roughly 10 BTC. If you need the website faster than that, I'll have to charge you more. I'm not sure how urgently you want it. Lets discuss your requirements further over PM.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers!

OK. Here's my advice. If you are sure that you will get more GPUs later then you need to prepare a PC that can handle several GPUs. I found that a PC with 4 x Radeon 280X to be a decent performer. Each of these cards makes between 700 and 800Kh/s but most of the time between 710 and 750Kh/s. So what you should go for is :

1. Motherboard with as many PCI-E slots as you can find for a decent price. Those PCI-E slots could be of any type from 1x to 16x, because you will have to use PCI-E extender cables anyway for multi-GPU configuration.
2. Cheapest CPU you can find
3. Not much RAM, 4GBs is enough (probably less is also OK)
4. Any HDD
5. Video cards - Radeon 280x, 7950, 7970. Make sure you buy a model with unlocked voltage, so that you can undervolt them. An example of what brand you should not buy is - Gigabyte. While XFX, Sapphire, ASUS are OK.
6. PSU - this is critical. I found that with a good 1KW PSU you can run 4x Radeon 280x but ONLY if you undervolt them (well this also depends on the brand of the cards, and also on each card itself). By default XFX Radeon 280X consumes about 280W (again this depends on the brand and the default GPU voltage), but with just a slight undervolt from 1.2 to 1.15V power consumption falls to 230W. So a good 1 KW PSU like Cooler Master V1000 or Fractal Design Platinum 1000 can power 4 of these cards. You should get a device for measuring the power consumption. That is for ensuring that you are not over-loading the PSU.

If you find the information useful you can donate me some DOGE.

Thanks for your input. Here is the rig configuration that I'm planning:

1. MoBo: ASRock 970 Extreme 4 (I can easily add 4 GPUs to this)
2. AMD Sempron 145 (The cheapest processor I could find in the market)
3. 4 GB 1600 MHz RAM
4. 16 GB USB flash drive (I'll be using Linux)
5. GPU: The R9 280x offering by MSI
6. PSU: Corsair AX 1200W
7. A couple of fans for air circulation
8. Sine wave inverter - for power surge protection and power backup

Total cost: roughly $1275

I've been following this as a guide: http://www.cryptobadger.com/build-your-own-litecoin-mining-rig/

Thanks for the information about under-volting. I'd read about it in the guide I mentioned above, but I didn't realize that it would have this much of an impact on the total power usage.

I'd send you some Doge if I had any, but I'm just starting off in the crypto-currency world. Perhaps when I have mined "much coin" :-)
