21  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Ok. Now it is my opinion - Mtgox STEALING bitcoins on: June 27, 2011, 06:26:08 PM
So.. What I think is going on - mtgox lost quite a bit of coins due their error and now try to recouple these with stealing money from smallish and new accounts!

Be careful before you state your single opinion (keyword=think) as an "official" statement.  I'd revise your subject.
22  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: TradeHill issues: let's evaluate on: June 22, 2011, 07:48:57 PM
Automatic password recovery, while efficient, is a bit of a problem from a security perspective...
Automatic methods do exist:

https://trading.scottrade.com/Login/PasswordResetRequest.aspx?lang=en

https://us.etrade.com/e/t/user/resetpasswd

You do realize that both of those examples probably posses your full address, SSN, and DOB that they will then ask you to verify to confirm your identity.

I'm pretty sure you want to remain as anonymous as possible on these exchanges.  Because of that, this is an entirely different ballgame in terms of maintaining security with anonymity.  Hence why MtGox now requires people to to provide past trade information to regain access to their account.

Can't have it both ways.  IMHO, password recovery in this case should inconvenience the user.
23  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Attention: mining pool operators on: June 21, 2011, 06:39:41 PM

Yes, wanting to know what happens when you leave a mining pool and try to withdraw 0.00999999 BTC obviously make me a troll. If the pools don't allow you to withdraw all your BTC, then that could legally be classified as theft. Would you put up with a bank that refused to hand over every last penny from your account, or would you be calling for their heads? This situation is no different and could cause the pools some legal headaches if they don't sort it out.

Let's just ignore this though because I'm so obviously a troll.

So let me understand this.  You realized you can't withdraw everything and think that this is the pool operator's fault and demand they explain themselves here, to you, in a separate thread (and toss out the word stealing in an accusatory tone).

Anyone that has read this forum already knows why (try the search function); the older bitcoin clients.

You state that you are a developer, but you made the same mistake that management and users do, you're trying to correct something by patching and fixing the end result to serve your immediate need.  Perhaps if you started this thread with "How can we make sure that all of the miner clients support 8 decimal places to REMOVE the coding in place that limits to 2 decimal places" things might be a little different with constructive replies.

24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Organize class-action suit if our BTC and/or $$$ is gone after MtGox is back up on: June 19, 2011, 11:24:24 PM
Class action suits do nothing but make lawyers rich.  Perhaps we should wait and see what happens before starting any type of threats of legal action.  People tend to respond better before just saying the hell with it and letting lawyers pick through scraps.

26  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BTC Guild - Server Update on: June 16, 2011, 07:49:45 PM
This is wonderful, but the loads seem to be changing drastically every time I refresh my status.  I picked USeast when it was low, and I've watched it go from overloaded and back a few times.  We really can't be expected to keep changing our workers around.

The server load is not changing quickly.  It would require a swing of over 250 GH/sec to take a server from Low to Overloaded.  Last night, US East and NL were overloaded, because the generic 'btcguild.com' was pointing at both of them using round robin DNS.  Immediately after US Central came online, btcguild.com was changed to point to that server.

Since then, the only server to have a status of overloaded was US Central.  There is a 100 GH/sec window for each status, so it would take a huge migration of workers to move the server from Normal -> Overloaded without spending time in the 'High load' status.

This would be the exact behavior I observed last night then.  I guess I should have clarified that it was an hour or so between each refresh.  Based solely on the 4 or 5 screens I saw I assumed that everyone was doing a knee-jerk reaction and changing pools, then overloading the previously good one.

I see this was recently added:
You have recently submitted shares to an overloaded server. This is hurting your BTC generation, please point your workers at a different BTC Guild server.

This really isn't going to help the situation if people are changing their workers and we all pick the same lowest server.
28  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: = ClockTweak = win32 command line clock/voltage tweaking tool on: June 14, 2011, 07:56:24 PM
Hi, received the app and it works great.

EDIT: Summary of tests, all were able to underclock memory to 300mhz.
XFX HD5850 Win7 64bit,  -v range is 951 to 1100 in steps of 1
HIS HD5770 WinXP 32bit,  no voltage control, fan speed reports unknown
Sapphire HD5750 Win7 64bit, -v appears in to be steps of 1, did not test full range.

Would like two feature requests:

1) ability to control fan speed from command line.  This way I can script idle/mining/gaming and control temps a little better.
2) bare format (suppress program name and version) that shows date/time and all adapter details in one line, would like to be able to run this every 5 mins and dump to a text file for logging/monitoring

XFX HD5850, 2 monitors attached, Win7 64bit

29  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: new video card with old motherboard - compatible? on: June 14, 2011, 07:49:45 PM
Provided the interface is x16 you shouldn't have any issues.  I mine with a HD5850 on a Dell 4700 circa 2005.  I did have to replace the power supply but the mobo worked fine.

Beware that some mobos made around 2005-2006 were known to have a bad batch of capacitors and the increased heat load from the card may be enough to do them in.  I'd inspect all caps for bulging/splitting before starting up the rig.
30  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Dwolla? on: June 14, 2011, 07:38:10 PM
As a seller, the fact that ANY type of complaint from a buyer reverses the money transfer from you and "locks" it for up to 21 days during mediation is a crock of [insert favorite smelly object here].  It then places the burden of proof on the seller to defend themselves while their product is still in the hands of the buyer.

Also, they will pick sides on controversial account holders regardless if that person broke no laws (as other posters have stated for any reason at any time).

Also, their fees are near extortion levels.  Dwolla charges $0.25. Period.  If they're able to make money off that, imagine what paypal is doing with 2.9%.
31  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Thinking of re using some of my Old office computers for mining on: June 14, 2011, 07:14:58 PM
I was not able to power my HD 5850 with a 450 watt PS (Computer booted, but shutdown 10 seconds after I started mining).  I believe they recommend a 500 or 550watt minimum.  Bear in mind that most of the OEM power supplies may not be capable of delivering the rating on the side as well.  Also note that my 5850 required 2 (two) 6 pin PCIe power connectors.

32  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Done with deepbit, what pool should I use? on: June 14, 2011, 06:39:06 PM
Honestly, all the major pools are facing problems due to DDOS and unexpected growth.  Best advice is not to put all your resources into a single one.  Setup multiple miners to separate pools so if one does fail you aren't down to zero hashes.  I thought I was done with deepbit too until the next pool I chose (btcguild) went down a few days later.  Now I run both.
