Hi all, hopefully all your questions have been answered thanks to weisoq's and Nova's informative posts. I'll reiterate again that Nova is the new HR admin, and if you're not getting paid what you think you should be, take it up with him first.

As sidhujag mentioned we basically don't have an active dev on the client; he was the last one to work on the code, and the coin price has been too low to attract any devs to work on it. If the price continues to rise that will likely change.

My abilities as leader are essentially limited to what I can do with the ongoing file. This is the list of admin pay. Accounting itself is still done by Unthinkingbit, who still maintains the charity github.

I have begun work on the division proposal code, and when it's ready I'll let you all have a good look at it before a final round of feedback and implementation. Because I don't have access to account.py itself, I will create a script that modifies ongoing with the shares necessary to make the proposal work. If you have any questions about that, I'm happy to answer them.

Ranlo (Raptorek): I've added you back to ongoing, as unthinkingbit passed your message on to me. You hopefully realize by now what happened to your payments.

Just a note, Develcuy messaged me and told me he didn't receive an email, but was still interested. I reinstated his role in ongoing and he will update his roles in HR.
23  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: April 13, 2015, 03:29:52 PM
Do we add ourselves to the other areas we administer? There's 3 total for me but only 1 is on the list.

Add everything you do, and we'll work it out.

Hey Hi,

I replied to Nova but he didn' t replied to me.

On top of that my coinzen account was recently deleted for unknown reason so I'm asking here why since I have no reply in private.

I was always here as an admin and I'm willing to continue.

Regards,

Flam.

Hi Flam, no worries, I'll add you back to ongoing. Add yourself to http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=devcoin_human_resources as an earning administrator/factotum. Not sure why your coinzen account would have been deleted. Either Nova or tenthirtyone will be able to assist with that.
24  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: April 13, 2015, 12:14:16 AM
Admins Remaining

The following people have replied to Nova regarding interest in continuing.

CryptoAddicto
Alyssa85
Papacrusher
emfox
Dinkleberg
K1773R
Fuzzybear
ranlo
Xeriandros
tenthirtyone
Markm

Of course, Nova and I are a part of that list too. Unthinkingbit is still supplying the accounting files, so will also remain on the list. Everyone who responded, please check http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=devcoin_human_resources and edit the first field with more information about your Role/s. Assume that you are the only one that knows what you're supposed to be doing, and that the community needs this information to work properly. Novacadian or I will figure out what to split it into, but we need your input. If you're interested in resurrecting Devcoins, remember that it will only succeed if you do your part.

Smeagol replied, and has asked to be replaced as bounty factotum and business administrator.

Anyone who is not on the list has been removed from the human resources page, as well as the ongoing file, with the assumption that they are no longer interested. Their roles have been replaced with an <empty role> tag, for future reference. Anyone can apply for any of these roles at any time, and may send Novacadian a message if they are interested in taking one on. The ongoing file shares (including the cuts below) have dropped from 105 to 39 for round 46.

Nodes

I'm not sure of the status of full devcoin nodes. I was running one on Blisterpool but I had to shut that down. I am setting up another server and I will add a full devcoin client to that, and update the ip address in the human resources list when that's done. Anyone else who's either running a node, or can run one, please make a post here. I know it isn't much, but the nodes are subsidized 1 share for the time being. We had about 6 or so on the list, but noone has put any ip addresses on. We will subsidize up to 6 again, as long as the IP addresses are there, and if you've set one up, let us know and you can go on that subsidized list (up to 6).

Devtome

There is an emerging situation with devtome that we should talk about. Jasinlee was in charge of it but seems to have disappeared. About six months ago when there were rumours going around about him, I spoke to him and managed to get access to the hosting service for devtome. It still appears to be running normally, except we seem to have lost a lot of functionality. Currently, only existing writers can write, and no new writers can join, nor can passwords be reset. I can get a full backup of the site if we want to move it, but transferring the domain may be difficult without jasinlee responding. Is there anyone here who is willing to host and administer devtome, if we can manage to get it off its current hosting service? For us to move forward, we need devtome working properly again, and it needs the time and hosting investment from someone who wants to see us succeed.

Should the transfer work out successfully, and we get it running as it should be again, we will revisit the idea of revenue generation. At the moment it is using a bitcoin based advertising agency, and the income is paltry. We will have a discussion about changing it to make it adwords compliable, before implementing anything, and maybe even revisit the idea of updating the css to something more pleasant.

Ad Campaign

Cryptoaddicto has told me that he's ready to launch a huge ad campaign, and is very enthusiastic about it. We need to give him something to write about! For him to be able to continue we need to get devtome working as intended again. I've cut the campaign funding for now, as it has a large reserve, and will reinstate it when we're up and running again.

Faucet

Faucet has about 20m dvc (http://devcoinblockexplorer.info/address/1EpJKJbpeoXnYGtoB8F6re78FMAtvNRWMf), cutting funding from 8 shares to 1 for now until it needs more.

looks like your wallet is corrupted. As sidhujag says try to export your private keys and re-import them into a fresh setup.

export keys: dumpprivkey [your public key here]
import keys: importprivkey <bitcoinprivkey> [label]

Hey everyone. Does anyone know why i cant send any coins from my wallet? Every time i try to do so, windows says that the programm has shut down in an unsual way and it just shuts itself down.... whats the crack?  Undecided
Which wallet version?

1.0.16 windows 32..... chain updates excellent and shows balance right and all transactions from 2 years back....

Anyone? Why does the wallet shut itself down when i try to move coins?

Hmm...we need more information.

In your devcoin folder you will see two files, db.log and debug.log. Open them up and paste the last 50-100 lines or so.

Hi Everyone,

Things are progressing, and after a bumpy start, it's time to do some cleanup before we can move forward.

First things first, I'd like to announce that I have appointed Novacadian as the new HR (Human Resources) Administrator.

The duties for the HR admin are as follows:

I've updated the HR page to now include 4 columns for duties. This is a work in progress, and we can adjust it for better information flow, but for now it'll do. Novacadian will do his best to flesh this page out accurately, which means he will be contacting everyone on the list to see who is still interested in being a devcoin administrator, and more specifically, what their duties entail. If people do not respond in a timely manner (a week after this post and/or a week after nova contacts them, whichever is later), it will be assumed they are no longer interested. Feel free to either reply here or in a pm to novacadian regarding your intent, and more details about your duties.

He will then give me recommendations on who should be removed from the admin list.

Secondly, we have to discuss admin payments and the general malaise of the community. Devtome has had a good run, but didn't quite work out as economically as UTB had predicted. We can't change the existing payment structure, but there are other solutions we will explore.

UTB had a rule that administration would at most take 15% of the pool, but for the time being, I'm removing that limit based on the fact that devcoin market capital has been eroded to almost nothing. What's left will be used to restructure what we have, so we can build a team to get this coin moving again. Nothing has changed in its mission, and if you believe in the mission, you're still very much welcome to be a part of it.

UTB has also requested that we keep the division proposal out of the account files on github, which means we will implement it via the ongoing file that I control. It won't be able calculate the ratios perfectly, because it will be based on estimations, but it will be much better than what we have now. Once we've reorganized our structure, we will have regular meetings on irc for planning purposes. One of the difficulties in the handover was that no one really knew what anyone else was doing except for UTB, and I don't think that's the most efficient way of doing things, as knowledge is too centralized. By getting more people involved, we can break down many barriers and make things smoother.

My proposal for admin pay is that each admin task in the HR table can have up to four duties, each worth 1 share per round. Each duty is specific and must be unique from the others, but related to the title. As an example, the duties I listed for the HR admin above can be considered four separate jobs, so novacadian would receive 4 shares for that duty under the new payment scheme.

If this is generally acceptable to everyone, we will implement it this round, and will last at least until the division implementation, where we revisit it and either continue or fall back to the original model. If you have anything to say about it, now's the time.

I have posted this on both official threads to maximize viewing.
29  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: January 28, 2015, 12:16:51 AM
As marketing admin, I am here and ready to do a good Devcoin press release as soon as the project has some good news Wink Even with the low price of DVC right now we can afford a good press release.

I am not sure whether now is the best time or if I should just do a "bigger" one with more maximum effect when Devcoin is relaunched. It seems everything is in transition, and it might not be the best time for a big advertising campaign right now, especially if it is true that new writers cannot be added to Devtome etc at the moment, but I am ready to do it when the community agrees.

Yeah pause and save for the moment. Advertising a broken system isn't going to help us in the long run.

Just a sidenote, the domain on which I host the business_bounty_xx.csv files recently expired.  As there have been no new bounties, I have not made any files, but if it is required I can start hosting them on another domain.  (Not sure if business_bounty is still needed with the new division changes)

rehost it if you can, sid, and pm UTB with the new domain/link. He'll have to change it on the accounting files.

Good.
Hunterbunter, what do you think about that?

I think it's all great discussion, and it's encouraging to see.

This coin is far from dead, and the price is going to do what the price is going to do for the time being. I'm still happy that people are seeing this as a good buying opportunity, as I do myself. It implies that people still believe in its mission, as I do too.

I've had some rl responsibilities hinder my ability to push forward the devcoin proposal since I took over in September, so the reason it is delayed is largely my fault. On the bright side, looking through the proposal now, there's still nothing that I would change about it, so I'm still confident that it will improve things long term (this is what I'm talking about, if you don't know: http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=devcoin_division_proposal).

There were some kinks in the change of leadership when I took over; a lot of admins just disappeared with the falling price, new devtome writers weren't being added by Unthinkingbit, and whole bunch of other stuff I don't have any control over was not being done - my role as "leader" felt very much like a namesake more than anything actually meaningful, and it really felt like I'd been handed a sinking ship just so it had someone to go down with it...without a manual. Maybe that's still the case, however this isn't like a stock where a company can go bankrupt and shut down (like penny stocks), the cryptocurrency is meritable in and of itself, and can be revamped as many times as we need to. As many have mentioned before, a lot of people here don't even earn devcoins because they need the money, they earn them because of its noble mission.

As for the proposed changes themselves, UTB is still in control of accounting, and doesn't want the account files changed (account.py), so instead we're going to have to implement the proposal via the ongoing bounty file, which I do control. The way the files run, however, means it's not going to perfectly divide all the divisions as expected. At the moment, what you see on something like http://dvccountdown.blisteringdevelopers.com is an imperfect estimate of the final shares, and when the account files are run, things like ratings, admin bonuses, marketing and all that are calculated by UTB and stored on his github. Once they are on there, it is "official", and final. I do my own calculations daily, but the only one that matters is the final one, which sometimes varies from mine slightly, probably because of timing. He then pushes those files to the various file custodians to be spread by the client. To implement the division proposal perfectly, it would have to be done before pushing to clients, which UTB doesn't want to do, from our last conversation. Doing it in the ongoing file means I have to predict what the final values are going to be, create normalizations on these, then the account script adds these to the final account.csv when UTB runs it. While I can make a very good guess, it's not going to be perfect. If the community still supports implementing the proposal this way, then that's what I'll do. I haven't calculated the error, but I estimate it to be around 5%, against the perfect version.

There are several other issues we face, going forward.

The first, is our exchange presence. Vircurex in particular is a problem, because it's run by the same people who run crypto-stocks, and while both were quite busy for a while, I've been hearing nothing but bad things about them for the last twelve months. Vircurex was hacked some time ago, and the owners promised to pay everyone back from the profits of trading, which was slowly working for a time. Then a few months ago, another issue they had meant they had to freeze funds, causing people to basically flee the exchange, which destroyed their trading volume. It still seems to be running ok now, but the volume is ultra light, meaning that both confidence in them is at an all time low, and there is extremely little incentive for the owners to build or invest anything more into it. The risk of putting funds on there long term is too high for my tastes. We are also listed on Cryptsy, which doesn't seem to be suffering the same fate, but being on only one and a half exchanges is disconcerting. We simply need more exchanges, which we aren't going to get until we're more interesting to speculators.

The second, is that we never managed to generate a block on the live chain, so couldn't confidently say our new client worked properly. This had repercussions down the line because people think the client hasn't changed in over a year, when it has had a lot of work done. The changes work in the test-net, but we have to convince the bigger merge mining pools to try them live and confirm all is well. One thing we could do is simply declare the new client official, and assume it works. It's not good practice to do this, but we may not have any other option without investing serious capital into mining hardware. I tried to do it with blisterpool, but p2pool just didn't pay out frequently enough to keep people interested...even when I was paying a 20% bonus in devcoins! I have had other ideas to get people to lend us their hash, but haven't had the time to actually do any of it. My time will become more available after January, which is when I can more seriously attempt the division changes again.

Devtome writers haven't been added for some time. UTB is still in charge of adding them, and I believe there is a substantial amount of work that goes into vetting new writers, which he seems to not have had the time to do. He is still around and is still doing the files, so the only thing writers can do about this is hound him until he does it, unfortunately.

Lastly, I wasn't exactly given a handbook on things when Unthinkingbit handed over the reigns, and essentially admins as they were have complete control over their assigned duties. This lack of organization is extremely difficult to problem solve, so one of the things I will address soon is who is actually still here doing their jobs. As someone mentioned, accountability has been poor, and that has to change if we have any hope of recovering. On that note, we will probably go through a mass culling of administrators in the next few rounds. Anyone who is still willing to work on devcoins (and has been), irrespective of the price are of course immune to the cull, but I suspect many haven't been bothering to do their duties as promised. I know the pay exists and is supposed to have some meaning, but to draw on the movies for a moment, I would rather have 300 Spartans than 3000 potters, sculptors and blacksmiths.

So I run blisterpool.com (simple p2pool node + layer of bonuses), and this asshole decides to try to extort 2btc from me. My node has been under a ddos attack for about 2-3 hours now.

I get an email to all my addresses, and then finally a message on here a few minutes ago. Copy/pasta of message:

Hello

Your mining server is extremely vulnerable to ddos attacks

I want to offer you info how to properly setup your protection, so that you can't be ddosed, at least not with so little power.
My price is 2 Bitcoin only.

Right now I'm running small (very small) attack which will not crash your server, but you should notice it in logs. Just check it.

If I increase the attack size, I could completely crash, it would drop all connections and damage would be big...
Don't worry, I will not do it. Smiley

I want to offer you  info on how I did it and what you have to do to prevent it. If interested pay me 2 BTC to 17aLGgw8AwJdqiBtMMG1QtQJgNQQkiyEsp

Thank you.

Hunter, I'm not 100% on this, but you may have fixed Shellshock, but still be vulnerable to Aftershock...

(note the aftershock fix was integrated before I first posted this)

The bash fix for CVE-2014-6271 (Shellshock) was incomplete and command injection is possible even after the patch has been applied. The issue is being tracked as CVE-2014-7169 (Aftershock).

Ongoing discussion here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8361574

If fixed after running
Code:
env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c "echo this is a test"
you should see
Code:
bash: warning: x: ignoring function definition attempt
bash: error importing function definition for `x'
this is a test
if still vulnerable you should see
Code:
vulnerable
this is a test

Aftershock has its own test:

Code:
env var='() {(a)=>\' bash -c "echo date"; cat echo; rm -f echo

If fixed you will see:

Code:
bash: var: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `='
bash: var: line 1: `'
bash: error importing function definition for `var'
date
cat: echo: No such file or directory

If vulnerable you will see:

Code:
bash: var: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `='
bash: var: line 1: `'
bash: error importing function definition for `var'
Fri Sep 26 09:20:00 UTC 2014

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info. It looks like my first two servers are fixed with aftershock. The third one is still vulnerable. It's a VPS while the other two are full dedicated...I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Might have a bad source or something that hasn't updated yet. bleh!
37  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [3500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: September 28, 2014, 10:35:47 PM

Shellshock, Aftershock & P2Pool

If you have not heard, a new vulnerability called Shellshock — also called the "Bash Bug" — is affecting both Linux computers and Macs, and it has the potential to let attackers take control of your computer or server.

Many P2Pool nodes run on Linux and Mac, to test your node open up a shell and run:

Code:
env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c "echo this is a test"

If you see:

Quote
vulnerable
this is a test

You are vulnerable and should update bash immediately.

Linux users should run:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bash

Apple has promised a security fix for Mac users soon.

Thanks for the heads up windpath!  Once you've installed the patched shell this is what you'll see:
Code:
env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c "echo this is a test"
bash: warning: x: ignoring function definition attempt
bash: error importing function definition for `x'
this is a test
That's on Ubuntu 14.04LTS fully updated as of the time of writing this post.  OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks is still vulnerable:
Code:
env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c "echo this is a test"
vulnerable
this is a test

I have 3 servers, 2 only says "This is a test" with no warnings...is that also normal?

The 3rd one says "vulnerable" and "this is a test". I've done an apt-get update/upgrade, and it claims its the newest version. Any idea why that wouldn't have worked on there? That one is Debian 6.0.10

Would it be alright if I spread the word to designers outside of the bitcoin community?

Yes of course!

They will need a devcoin address to get paid shares if they win though, but I guess that's the whole point.
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: September 22, 2014, 07:29:14 AM
Great, so based on the criteria in the post by serejandmyself below, there is a bounty of 6 shares (plus up to two 3-share consolation bounties) for designs/mockups submitted by 22nd October 2014 1200 UTC.

If no designs have been submitted by this date, or no designs satisfy all the judges, we'll increase the shares awarded and set a new deadline until this task is completed. The length of time judges need should be about a week to come to a decision after this date.

This bounty is for a design or mockup only, and the winner will have exclusive rights to work on the actual website using their design for one month, before it opens up to everyone using the same winning design. The 6 shares award is for the rights for the devcoin community to use that design in an updated devcoin.org.

The site itself merits a bounty of 24 shares, split between designers/developers as they see fit. The designer doesn't have to be able to code the site up themselves, just make it look good, and fit the criteria below. If the designer opts not to create the website itself, they can waive their right to exclusivity and we'll open it up to anyone using that design. I'm sure there are developers willing to aid in the task of wiring it all together lurking around, either way.

Submissions are welcome either as links to images or mockup sites with trash data. I would say at least two pages should be included for the design.

Any objections or something that should be changed or clarified?

Ok so here is the list considering all judges opinion :

Criteria list for the new DVC website :

The website must,

1)   Be modern and progressive

2)   Have cutting edge graphics and functions

3)   Should be interactive and user friendly as much as possible

4)   Be easy to read and be understandable to anyone (layout included)

5)   Load quickly enough

6)   State DVC mission, include FAQ about the basics of DVC, explain its purpose and history

7)    Consider DVC’s logo and colors in its design

8 )   Make it easy to understand links to various aspects of DVC (i.e. bounties, Devtome, forums etc.)

9)   Not be heavy on the eye and be designed with lay in mind due to the fact that some participants (investors and such) might not be overly technical.

Random Devcoin animation.

Newsam just messaged me on coinzen with an animation he made. It has 80's music, style and cinematography, and I really liked it (not sure if on purpose or due to tech on hand). Maybe it's just nostalgia...I miss the 80s...so much character. Anyway, I thought I would share:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B0VcyIzg6Q&feature=youtu.be

Cool! Is that your work?

Further to this, here's one of the articles he wrote on devtome (username samkary, has link in article), about devcoins in africa: http://devtome.com/doku.php?id=how_i_spent_my_devcoins_in_africa. As you all know we're not a charity, and he's earned his shares the same as everyone else, but it pleases me greatly that we can have this sort of impact on people's lives. It's a really inspirational story, and I encourage everyone to read it to see what your support of devcoins is actually doing in the far flung reaches of the world. As far as I can see he's still consistently contributing to devtome with a current 80 median rating..apparently I rated him 85 a few months ago too, so I think he's a good writer and an asset to devtome and the devcoin community.

When I was talking about devcoins being better as a transaction coin, this is pretty much a prime example of what I meant. It doesn't matter where in the world people come from; having a passion for writing, creating, and programming for the good of all, doesn't necessarily mean they will have local options to make the best use of their raw talents, enough to draw an income from. We're providing a platform for people with these talents but without opportunity, and those who would support them to meet, and I am humbled to be a part of something that could improve the lives of potentially so many people. I know I've only recently been given lead administrator role, but I want to sincerely thank all of you long term devcoin investors out there for having the vision and altruism to put humanity first in the way you have done here.
