This thread looks totally absurd as the market is falling each day at the moment..!

I think the 1.2k apex was driven by a "gold rush" like event with BTC breaking in the front page of Google News. It then followed a bubble/land slide effect and has now stabilized at 4-5 hundred levels. Stability is good, it's very good in fact and Bitcoin has bravely held many hurdles (Mt Gox, China, Russia, etc). Yes, it will oscillate more then the dollar but consider it is still a new technology and the world has still to adapt to it. Traditional currencies oscillate also, consider USD exchange rates during Bernanke talks or Bureau of Economic Analysis announcements.

A stable $400 level is better than a highly inflated $1200. And although it might not seem like it now, BTC will rise again. It has nowhere else to go but up.

Happy Mining!

For what it's worth, 4 x R9 280x should add an extra consumption of roughly 900W. Normally motherboards are not designed to carry that much current directly, hence the auxiliary power cables for the GPUs. Make sure these auxiliary power cables get enough juice (from the power supply) to power the boards otherwise there will be extra demand in the motherboard. Some motherboards (like most processors) have a thermal shutdown point. Good ventilation can help in this case. Hope it helps.

Now, I don't know you guys very well because I'm new here. But Dank had an experience and he felt like sharing. Plus defying gravity is quite a subject. Coming from a scientific background I can tell you with confidence there are still a lot of things to be discover (or to be made public) about gravity. To get straight to the point of mind over matter, there are a bunch of random generators (true random generators) that are being monitored. This is done under the Global Consciousness Project initiated by Institute of Noetic Sciences with Dr. Dean Radin as one of the lead scientists there. To put it short, these true random generators (based on quantum mechanics as opposed to software that mimics true randomness) should not deviate too much out of their norm. But it has been discovered that they do during major world events which (again) they shouldn't. Why do they do that, nobody knows. But it sure raises more questions than answers. And if mind (collective) has an influence over quantum events then why not gravity.

Did Dank levitate? was it C20H25N3O? perhaps an inner ear problem? There are many possibilities, but he sure has a point with his dream (not sure about the donation part - just the other part).

And for the skeptics, it is possible the chair you are sitting on will turn into something else in the next moment. Nothing in physics can stop all the atoms in your chair from reaching their half-life all at the same time in the near future. The chances for this to happen are so small that it's just too hard to articulate how incredibly small they are. But the thing is, even if the chances are small nobody can decide when this can happen. Statistically, with no precedence, your chair could turn into a pile of something else equally in the next second, hour, millennium, 1 trillion years. After it happens once we can say with certainty it won't happen again very shortly but until then you never know Smiley

Nice rig and congrats on all the DIY work.

Litecoin is a very good choice. For multiple coins multipool is tried and tested. And for auto profit switching why not try easypool.me.

I don't think scrypt ASICs will be the game changer sha256 ASICs were.

I didn't at first, I thought they were only going to be like FPGAs coming into bitcoin, but when KNC announced at 100 MH then bumped it to 250, then I knew GPUs were on a time limit...

Good point. Who knows, we'll see. I don't think this will necessarily spell the end for GPU mining though. Not with all the other algorithms and multitude of coins out there.

The graphical processing units on laptops are usually less powerful compared to their desktop cousins. Same goes for CPU. You can get for example a laptop with a Intel Core i7-3667U CPU but a desktop Intel Core i7-3770 will run twice as fast. The difference is even bigger for the GPU. For example Radeon HD 7870M (I think this stands for "Mobile" version) will consume less current and run slower than Radeon HD 7870 (which is 3 times faster).

It's possible to mine on a laptop but you'll have the problem of overheating and performance will be poor. It's a bit late to mine sha256 without ASICs.

I don't think scrypt ASICs will be the game changer sha256 ASICs were.

Happy mining!

There is 12,577,500 bitcoin in circulation right now.

So with roughly that much bitcoin multiplied to $1,000,000 USD would would make the total value of all the bitcoin $12,577,500,000,000.

Thats twelve trillion ,five hundred seventy seven billion ,five hundred million.

There was approximately $1.27 trillion in circulation as of March 26, 2014, of which $1.22 trillion was in Federal Reserve notes.

"source - http://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/currency_12773.htm"

I'm not sure total USD in circulation is a good valuation point for Bitcoin. First there is an international aspect, BTC is not restricted to USA. Second the $1.27 trillion represents dollars in circulation. But one dollar can be exchanged twice, thrice or multiple times. A much better indicator I think is gross domestic product (or gross national product) because this represents the total market value of goods produced domestically (at a national level respectively) per year.

And for the optimists, since BTC is international why not take the foreign exchange market as a reference point. According to Bank for International Settlements, trading in foreign exchange markets averaged $5.3 trillion per day in April 2013. Again that's per day! Can you imagine what would happen if only a fraction of these transactions would be done in BTC?

b) It is not widely accepted as a means of payment. This could be due to extremely volatile prices or the fact that there are no Major Bitcoin payment processing systems available yet.

Good point, BTC has high volatility compared to regulated currencies BUT as a money transfer option it's just better hands down. Nothing stops merchants from accepting bitcoins and exchanging them the same day for USD or on the spot. This will definitely put a new spin on things. The thing is Bitcoin is so new and people don't have anything else to compare it too. What is Bitcoin? Is it a currency, commodity, transfer option, stock... nobody really know and they just say cryptocurrency when asked.

I believe Bitcoin has many uses and one of them is money transfer. Bottom line, Paypal transaction fee 3.4% + 35 cents, merchant account credit card processing 2.9%-5.5% + 30 cents, Bitcoin priceless Cheesy (variable depending on amount and exchange but generally much cheaper)

Well, let's try to make a guess. According to the Worldwatch Institute and Earth Policy Institute the gross world product (GWP = combined GNP/GDP) was about $73 trillion in 2013. To put this in perspective back in 1950 the GWP was about $7 trillion . So let's say, for the sake of argument that by 2050 the gross world product will at least double (which is more than a safe argument) and become at least $146 trillion. The projected BTC supply for 2050 is roughly 20.9 million. Also for the sake of argument let's presume that by 2050, 15% of all transaction are done in bitcoins. 15% of $146 trillion is roughly $21.9 trillion and divided by 20.9 million BTC you get about 1,047,846 USD per 1 BTC.

But forget about 2050, let's talk about tomorrow. IF by tomorrow 3% of all transactions (and Bitcoin has the potential to achieve much more) are done with bitcoins this leaved us with 3/100*73 trillion ~ $2,1 trillion. Divide that by 10.5 million BTC and you get 1 BTC = $219,000

Unless my math is wrong $1,200 could be just the tip of the iceberg Smiley

I think it might hit 1 million USD one day because it just has too many advantages as a mean of exchanging money. Having said that, I don't necessarily think it will replace ALL "conventional" currencies. It will probably achieve a balance at some point.

Behind the big media conglomerates (Comcast,The Walt Disney Company,21st Century Fox/News Corporation,Time Warner,Viacom,CBS Corporation) that basically decide what's "good" and "evil" for you, lies a big, huge, humongous pile of "bank money". So naturally when you are a bank selling something invented in antiquity and the 21st century comes knocking at your door with bitcoins, of course you are going to react. And the media has reacted plentifully at every sidestep of cryptocurrencies stopping short of declaring Bitcoin from hell. Although if I'm not mistaken, there are a couple of articles out there declaring them "evil". But at the end of the day it's just like gal lamps vs electricity at the beginning of the 20th century. Newspapers shouted left and right back then but nothing they said could stop electrons flowing through a wire. Similarly at the end of the day Bitcoin is a better way of transferring money and there's nothing they can do about it.

On a side note I'm all for technology and I think we should get as much of it as possible out in the open and face the challenges of this new century instead of running away from it.

Happy mining!

Welcome Bourja, Bitcoin uses SHA-256 (a cryptographic hash functions) and in the beginning it was profitable to mine using your computer's CPU and GPU. With time mining difficulty increased and specialized mining boards came out called ASICs (application-specific integrated circuit) designed specifically to solve SHA256 hashes and do nothing else. Since ASICs are much much faster compared to GPUs, mining bitcoins without specialized software has become a bit "obsolete" (although possible).

It is very likely that everything is OK with your system but it would just take a very very very long time to mine a BTC block on a standard computer (using just your CPU/GPU).

There are of course alternative cryptocurrencies that are based on scrypt rather than SHA256 which are more 'GPU friendly' if you will. The most popular scrypt coin is probably Litecoin. You could mine Litecoin with a good GPU using a Litecoin dedicated pool. Another option would be mine at a multipool. A multipool is a pool that has multiple currencies. Some payout in bitcoins like Easypool.me.

Happy mining!
