21  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / How do I run the Phoenix miner script directly in Windows 7 x64? on: July 23, 2011, 08:28:47 PM
I would like to run the Phoenix python script directly and test if there is any performance benefit to doing so.  After installing Python 3.2 for Windows 7 x64, I run the following commands in the source directory containing phoenix.py and always get the same error:

Code:
C:\users\me\downloads\phoenix-1.50\src>.\phoenix.py
  File "C:\users\me\downloads\phoenix-1.50\src\src\phoenix.py", line 98
    except ValueError, e:

Code:
C:\users\me\downloads\phoenix-1.50\src>.\phoenix.py -u http://user:pass@uswest.btcguild.com:8332 -k phatk
  File "C:\users\me\downloads\phoenix-1.50\src\src\phoenix.py", line 98
    except ValueError, e:

Line 98 implies a connection error from the following source.  Do I need to pass the url in a special manner on the command line?

Code:
    def makeConnection(self, requester):
        if not self.connection:
            try:
                self.connection = minerutil.openURL(self.url, requester)
            except ValueError, e:
                print(e)
                exit()
        return self.connection

What does the Fan:91 & Fan:80 mean?

The program is reporting the current speed of your GPU fans, as a percentage.

I am wondering though if this is an accurate throughput measurement.  My pool is reporting lower-than-expected 24-rewards, and GPU temperatures are also 2 degrees cooler in this configuration.  I am also under the impression that 800Mhz is the lowest supported memory clock for this card.

Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

I just realized that the difficulty went up during the time I was testing; this explains the lower 24h rewards.  I'm still curious as to how a lower memory clock frequency could improve the hash rate though.

I am running a 4x6770 rig, with all cards manufactured by Sapphire.  Also using Phoenix 1.5 with SDK 2.4 and 11.6 Catalyst drivers.  Each GPU is clocked to 960/800 at the stock voltage.

Prior to the patch, each GPU capped at 217Mhps.  This is with the 3% phatk mod.  After the patch, I saw no difference until I reduced the memory clock to 300Mhz.  The GPUs now cap at about 220Mhps.

I am wondering though if this is an accurate throughput measurement.  My pool is reporting lower-than-expected 24-rewards, and GPU temperatures are also 2 degrees cooler in this configuration.  I am also under the impression that 800Mhz is the lowest supported memory clock for this card.

25  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Running an overclocking profile during Windows startup on: July 20, 2011, 03:10:22 PM
Maybe I don't get something. IME when you reboot, the overclocking profile is retained. I never have to reset it.

The problem I'm having is that when I put things in startup, my network hasn't initialized and this causes the workers to hang.

I've rebooted during testing several times, and each time, the default profile is restored from the card.  Perhaps it is just the cards I have though (Sapphire 6770).
26  Bitcoin / Mining support / Running an overclocking profile during Windows startup on: July 20, 2011, 05:36:49 AM
Hello,

I would like to set up an overclocking profile for my 4x6770 machine during Windows start-up; that is, after windows boots and before any user logs in.  Ideally, I would like to set the clock, memory, voltage, and fan speeds prior to running any miners during at start-up time.  Unfortunately, I cannot find a tool that will reliably do this for me.

  • ClockTweak is ideal, except the current version doesn't allow me to control the fans for the 6770
  • MSI Afterburner would work except that it needs an interactive logon session to apply a profile
  • AMD Vision Control Center would also work but also needs an interactive logon session

Is there a tool can run as either a Windows service or startup script that will execute an overclocking profile for the entire machine?

I'm in the process of testing this for a Win7x64 system running 4x6770 (Sapphire).  Everything seems to work fine except the program will not detect the fan speed of the cards (reports N/A), nor allow me to set the fan speed.  This is peculiar as I can set and monitor fan speeds with the ATI Catalyst and MSI Afterburner tools.

I'll post program output later today as I am not at the computer with the hardware right now.

Here is a quick output dump showing the functionality working with a Sapphire 6770, albeit no fan control or speed reporting.  I've been able to change multiple GPU properties in the 4x6770 system, but I'll only show the dump for one.  If eligible, you may send the testing credit to 1BrcSXF3te8YNvfwDp9yoFebvZNkxGRe7i.

29  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Choosing a pool on: July 17, 2011, 08:14:27 PM
I've recently been looking at the hash speeds of other pools, and now I'm a bit confused as to how one goes about actually choosing a pool. This is my current scenario:

Pool A: Less people, lower overall pool speeds. Blocks can take anywhere from 30min to 24hours (zomg..) to be solved, but on average it seems like it's 1 block every 5-7 hours. At my hash rate I get around 0.07btc per solved block.

Pool B: More people, massively higher pool speeds. Blocks are solved frequently, taking at most about 2hrs, but on average it seems to be less than an hour. At my hash rate I get only 0.007btc per block.

I get much higher rewards per block for mining in pool A, but it's disheartening to sometimes be stuck with a 12hour+ block. Blocks are solved a loooot faster in pool B, but over a 24 hour period or so, it seems I earn less in total than pool A.

Which one should I stick with?

My experience over the past month shows that the important factors are pool uptime and to some extent, the pool hash rate.  The smaller the pool hash rate, the closer you are to solo-mining.  You also want a pool that is rarely down (ideally always up) to minimize idle time.  In the long run, you will generally make the same amount of BTC in any pool, all variables being constant.

The time limit is a good idea, but requiring post count I don't see as great, it just encourages people to post useless stuff in the newbie section.  Like this Smiley

Reminds me of the BBS-days in the mid-1980s where I had to post a message of minimum content before I would be allowed access to the file section for downloading (never a restriction on uploads though).

State your company, project in addition to what you wish to do on the forums. We will get you whitelisted promptly.

My colleagues and I are considering the implementation of a powerful mining rig for the purpose of selling mining contracts.  We are starting small, and testing the feasiblity of the idea as hardware costs and network difficult changes.

We are a small group of engineers and software developers that are also hoping to improve the quality of the existing BTC tools.  Access to the forums will help us with these endeavours.
