21  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [6600Th] Eligius: 0% Fee BTC, 105% PPS NMC, No registration, CPPSRB (New Thread) on: March 30, 2014, 07:47:12 PM
this pool doesn't seem to payout the way it explains itself..  been watching it like a hawk the past week and seems payouts has a mind of its own

a detail on the mechanics (not the theory) would be useful since it doesn't seem to behave in practice as it is intended... basically it seems all accumulated work gets held ransom regardless of current block luck cycles which in theory should be paying out portions past your pay threshold but in practice it just sits there and says you are going further and further behind as if all your current work is old work that has to wait for super luck to include you .. and that doesn't even seem to trigger it either

it is broken

That is how it's designed to operate. Each share will never receive 100% of it's value paid, so therefore each share will forever sit around in some partially unpaid state. It's a highly convoluted way of charging operating fees without using the word "fee".

Not that fees are bad, they're needed to cover all sorts of things - especially in (effectively) a PPS pool... just misleading the way it's currently advertised.
22  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitcoin lost >50% of hashrate, what happened ? on: March 30, 2014, 04:25:23 PM
I noticed that the ZeroBlock app is reporting a block time of 17 minutes, but being on my phone I haven't been able to verify how they've come to this conclusion.

It seems reasonable that they could be estimate block time based on network hash rate as reporting by blockchain. In which case, this is explained by DeathAndTaxes. I'm just not sure where they're (ZeroBlock) is pulling their info from.

Be nice if it was true  Cheesy
23  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bye Bye Bitcoin..... Really??? on: March 30, 2014, 04:20:13 PM
Still hold my bitcoins , but i am panicked now. I paid $800 per bitcoin. Cry

I'd probably sell if I was that far underwater. The market hasn't even reached a bottom yet, so you can always sell and rebuy once the market stablizes.

It's not like it's going to turn around over night from a sell off like this, the markets going to have to test a new bottom. And will probably trade in a range for a while before any form of recovery occurs. My guess is a slow but steady recovery, but I'm unsure of how low the bottom will be this time.

lulz.  Irrational is the coolest about it.  Such candor.

Just tryin'  Cheesy

I've used Coinbase several times, and to my experience they're no Gox.
25  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Watch out for Coinbase. They robbed me. on: March 29, 2014, 11:59:13 AM
Those of you who are asking for proof are missing the point.  I'm trying to warn people, not win points in a debate.  People who are receptive to a warning will make use of it, those who have blind faith risk suffering a loss as I have.  Will everyone suffer a loss?  Obviously not.  I'm just relating what happened to me, and what *might* happen to you.  I've tried to resolve this with support and after talking to three people my problem is still unresolved.

When I feel safe to give more information I will update this thread.

But, you have not warned people of anything. It's like saying "lookout I was hit by a car", but without the specifics of what time of day, what intersection, and what the road conditions were like its impossible to heed your warning.

Coinbase is a very reputable company, with a legit setup. They've even hired top brass from companies like Facebook. So the general public is going to dismiss any warning without specifics as trolling.

Try this:

Were you buying or selling Bitcoin's?
Did you have a balance of BTC at the time the incident occurred?
Did you have a 2FA device associated with your account?
Did they refuse to honor all or part of an order?
What happened when you contacted their support team?
What date did this incident occur?
Have if used Coinbase before, and if so how long and to what extent?
You said Coinbase is giving you back some of your money, please elaborate on what you said to them to convince them to issue you a refund.

Thanks!
26  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could WalMart go for a cryptocurrency. on: March 29, 2014, 01:38:14 AM
I'd imagine the intersection of wal-mart customers and bitcoin users is close to zero.

Furthermore, wal-mart is too conservative for something like that. Who knows what percentage of their transactions are Visa or MasterCard.... I'd wager 90% or more.
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: IRS Ruling Best thing Imaginable, You Idiots on: March 28, 2014, 10:05:24 AM
Except this basically kills mining in the US, at least at a large scale.

This assumes that previously US citizens were not required to pay tax on their "magical mysterory money". Sorry, not the way that works, the moment I sell BTC I've generated income and have to pay taxes. The only difference is that now the IRS has clearly defined how they want people to account for these assets.

So, any large operations in the US who were avoid taxes previously will probably countinung to do so until the exchanges are forced to collect tax information.
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin wallet question on: March 27, 2014, 02:15:04 AM
For example, if i have a USB with KALI Linux installed on it..i download  bitcore on there and install it will that theoretically work?..also Lets say i sent 1BTC from coinbase to my wallet on my USB stick...and my wallet wasnt online..that 1BTC would not get to my wallet until i physically plugged my usb stick in to a online computer correct?...where does that 1BTC go in the mean time? in some time of holding space on coinbase?....thanks for all the help guys..

It doesn't "go" anywhere. Your coin was always in the blockchain, regardless of if your computer is online. Your wallet is just a collection of private keys giving you ownership over certain "addresses". If an output belongs to your address in the blockchain, then your bitcoin wallet app will show you your balance. However, you still have this balance regardless of if you're online or your wallet app is synced.

Whats next? Cry

This is why Coinbase hired the Facebook security directory.
30  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Block chain size/storage and slow downloads for new users on: March 27, 2014, 12:06:19 AM
Here is an example of the point I'm making -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=537748.0

Until either Bitcoin Core doesn't take forever and a day to sync, or it stops being the "official" client, then we'll see posts like this with an ever increasing frequency.

Perhaps the bitcoin.org site could only reference the "Bitcoin Core" app under the "developers" section, and for the "getting started" only reference wallets that don't need the full block chain. Just a thought.
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Synchronzing (Funds Lost???) on: March 26, 2014, 11:57:21 PM
As long as the address you had funds sent to was correct, you should be good.

The Bitcoin Core can take a very long time to get synced for the first time. But, this is independent of your ability to receive funds. They should be waiting for once the sync finishes.

To verify, visit https://blockchain.info and type in your Bitcoin address. It should display the amount and verify that your money is waiting on you.
32  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: WARNING ! Vircurex is freezing your BTC, LTC, FTC, TRC. on: March 24, 2014, 01:57:21 AM
"Vircurex is freezing your BTC, LTC, FTC, TRC."

The title of this thread is misleading. Vircurex isn't "freezing" anyone's BTC, LTC, FTC, TRC. They are refusing to honor the IOUs which they issued when someone deposited their BTC, LTC, FTC, TRC.

If you aren't the sole controller of your private keys, you don't have any bitcoins.

This is very true.

Never leave any BTC in an exchange, online wallet, etc. that you cannot afford to lose. Transfer it in, conduct your transaction, and then transfer it out ASAP. These companies are not piggy banks, and due to the nature of Bitcoin they cannot be easily held liable. Just ask anyone who's been goxed.

The QR code looks like it was photoshopped in.

What QR code? lol.
Look at the picture in the first post.

Oh, geeh. Yes, I saw that... But it wasn't as interesting as a pretty woman, so I stopped looking.

Ah, this joke lost it the moment I had to explain it.
35  Economy / Speculation / Re: Predict the price of Bitcoin on 3/30/14 on: March 24, 2014, 01:25:14 AM
Based on the chart it looks like the price is leveling or ready for price increase:

My guess is either stay at current levels or maybe a slight hike to around $570-575 price.

Looks to me like it trading in a range, and has some lower resistance around $550... So, I'd second your appraisal of upper-mid $500s.

38  Other / Meta / Re: Avatar cannot be changed on: March 23, 2014, 05:48:36 PM
I think changing avatar is possible but its only available for Donators and vip members and mods, i might be totally wrong but i think i have read it somewhere on the forum !!!

It's not available for anybody.
Yup, probably because of the exploit.

Does something just seem a little ironic about the fact that a cryptocurrency, which emphases security, runs it's official forums on a platform it can't secure short of disable profile pictures?

I'm failing to think of any other forum on the Internet that doesn't allow profile pictures out of a security concern.
39  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: To Bitstamp: Gox's coins are being sold on your exchange on: March 23, 2014, 05:33:52 PM
I think the problem for Bitstamp and other exchanges becomes more complicated once they are knowingly in receipt of money obtained through illegal means or have been notified as such. They probably need to tread very carefully here.

This.

Gox is already under the legal lense and this forum is actively monitored for leads. This is definitely a trail that will be followed.

After being notified, Bitstamp has a legal obligation to inquire into the origin of these coins. If the court determines that these coins are stolen then Bitstamp will be charged with money laundering and their USD bank accounts may be seized just like those Gox accounts were.

If you were talking USD and a US based company, I know this would be true. But neither are true. Specifically this company isn't dealing with stolen fiat, and I know of no laws compelling companies of any country to investigate stolen "virtual" currencies.

I could be wrong, and that's why I wanted to ask... what laws would compel them to do anything?
40  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: To Bitstamp: Gox's coins are being sold on your exchange on: March 23, 2014, 03:43:41 PM
Appreciate the detective work. Assuming you are correct, what should bitstamp do about it?

That's for them and their lawyers to decide. We all would appreciate some public statement from them however in regards to whatever decision they take. They were emailed yesterday and have not yet responded.

I don't think there is much that can be done. Those coins are lost. It's best to move on and learn that keeping large sums of BTC in online wallets, exchanges, etc is a bad idea.
