27  Other / Off-topic / Anyone here into game development, what game engine are you using right now? on: April 28, 2014, 01:10:53 AM
What engine are you currently using right now, and why? And if you're not developing something right now, what engine do you want to use for your next project?

I'll start, I'm using my own Java engine. I decided to kill two birds with one stone, and finish a project for my CS class (the engine), and create a game from scratch.
28  Economy / Economics / If I were to use Bitcoin to buy something that doesn't lose value, such as gold on: April 28, 2014, 12:01:52 AM
First of all, I know I'm going to have to pay taxes on my bitcoin. Yes, I know this is partially against what the foundation of bitcoin is etc. etc., but I believe just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Risk/Reward is also devastating. I'd rather pay 28% on my gains than spend time in jail, or have a criminal record.

So besides that, I know that you can't get taxed if you spend bitcoin on items. I would want to buy something that doesn't lose a lot of value quickly, such as gold. If you have another idea for this, please let me know. Gold was just the easiest I could think of.

Situation: Bitcoin goes way up in a bubble like scenario, and I want to cash out. Could I buy something, like gold, and hold onto it for a year, then sell so I don't get short term capital gains? With long-term capital gains, I may actually be able to get into the 0% tax bracket, so I stand to gain a lot this way.

Is something like the above feasible? Or is there an easier way to do it?

32  Other / Off-topic / just start datin few weeks ago how do I explain her I can't pay for everything? on: April 22, 2014, 04:26:24 PM
So I just got out of a relationship a few months ago, and started dating this girl I reconnected with (we used to work together). We have a ton of fun together, and the first few times we hung out weren't "official" dates so I wasn't paying for everything.

The last time we hung out though, she made a comment about how when she hangs out with her other guy friends it's "different" and I'm "treating her like a bro" since these friends usually pay for all her drinks and food and I didn't.

I'm not in an amazing financial situation - I do ok, but with the breakup I'm paying for an entire place myself, plus all my bills, utilities, food, etc. - I can afford to take a girl out to a nice dinner like once a week and some affordable meals here and there, but I can't be dropping money left and right every time we see each other.

She's mentioned in the past that she had a pretty well-off boyfriend who bought her a house, went on a few dates with a billionaire, and has told me her mom berates her for "having champagne taste on a beer budget". She spends a ton of money on clothes, handbags (she works in fashion), the kind of money I'd never spend on stuff like that. I assume she makes better money than me, because she lives with her parents but eats out every night, the clothes, etc.

How do I politely get it across that I like spending time with her, but can't afford to pay her way all the time? Once in a while sure, but I'm getting the impression that she expects to be treated anytime we go out and do anything. It's not that I'm super cheap and don't want to spend money on women, but I'm trying to balance paying my bills as well as set some money aside for the future to buy a house (have a good chunk of retirement started and a savings account.

34  Other / Off-topic / What is the "empty space" in an atom? on: April 22, 2014, 11:26:42 AM
I've taken a bit of chemistry in my life, but something that's always confused me has been the idea of empty space in an atom. I understand the layout of the atom and how its almost entirely "empty space". But when I think of "empty space" I think of air, which is obviously comprised of atoms. So is the empty space in an atom filled with smaller atoms? If I take it a step further, the truest "empty space" I know of is a vacuum. So is the empty space of an atom actually a vacuum?
