Y'all have lost the plot.

What does that even mean?

Any reason for the price drop?

Nothing from the development side caused this.  We continue to work on the project making progress.

We will try to see why we can not have more people join the Slack. Hopefully it can be resolved soon.

I think the issue was that the bot that allows users to join Slack automatically was exploited to attempt to scam some users by impersonating people....so ImI turned it off.  Maybe someone who knows more about Slack can discuss w/ ImI to determine if there is a way to enable the bot to automatically join slack without the issues that were observed.

Anyone know what kind of forging rewards are earned? Can someone post their earnings, how many coins forging, time forging? Thanks

Right now there aren't many transactions on the network so forging won't earn you much, but once the compute engine is in place, forging will also get all the fees from POW / Bounty transactions which could potentially be quite numerous.

BTW does anyone know why when I log into the wallet I get a message that I may be on a fork?

you can take a look here...it's nothing to worry about at this time:

how is everything going?  Smiley

We are still working to integrate the compute engine into the elastic node code.  The primary challenge here (and what takes so much time) is that EK is coding it in such a way that no hard-fork will be required to implement the compute engine.

If it takes so much time, then perhaps HF would be more efficient?
The network isn't that big, so it should go smoothly

If you'd like to jump in and help code then you can help determine the most efficient way to proceed; otherwise, I'd recommend just leave it up to the people actually doing the work to decide how they'd like to implement the code.

How many coins are needed for a XEL masternode? is it 100k?

We moved away from the supernode approach a couple months ago.  The community expressed concerns about it being to centralized of an approach.  In the current design being worked on, any node can opt in to validate Elastic jobs (or opt out such as in the case of exchanges).

One advantage of changing to "Elastik" or some other similar name is the .com domains should be available for a website, forum, etc.  The disadvantage of course would be that people actually thinking the name is "Elastic" could end up in the wrong location.  Maybe there is better solution.

Hi,  say I want to run a data mining project in this elastic supercomputer.
This project would require a somewhat large data set to download to the system.
Then it would require some software to read the and conduct the analysis using the supercomputer.
Let say I could write a program to do so if needed (though could be complex).

How far away are we from elastic capability to allow something like this.
Or are we already there in principle?

In principle it can do what you stated; however, it would certainly depend on your definition of a large data set.  Here are a couple of things to note:

  1) We need EK to confirm that max storage size that the network can handle....right now the miner is coded to only allow 256MB memory use, but that is just a random number I picked...it will depend on what EK determines the network can handle as part of the message traffic.
  2) Currently, the Elastic UI doesn't allow the job author to upload a starting dataset....the current miner / node design accommodate this, but the UI would need to be modified to provide a way to upload the data
  3)  In the existing design, for smaller datasets (i.e. < 100K or so) you'd just include the dataset in the ElasticPL code and use it to initialize the variables during the first round.

So again, it would depend on what you consider a large dataset...as we've pointed out numerous times, the current design of Elastic was not intended for data intensive tasks such as rendering, machine learning, etc.

I like the fact that there are multiple competing "supercomputer" projects. The competition will push the actual development of this important crypoto real application area!

I agree that competition is good.  It's interesting to see all the different approaches to leverage blockchain tech for distributed computing.

As the project here goes, golem and sonm seem to be stagnant without getting anywhere, I wondered how this elastic I am thinking of investing here also in the long term but if the project is still alive Smiley

it is alive. just needs time.

There are frequent updates to the 2 main githubs for the the project:

     https://github.com/sprocket-fpga/xel_miner
     https://github.com/OrdinaryDude/ElasticPrototypeWallet

Unlike the other projects, we are aiming to be fully decentralized.  Steady progress is being made, but things are much more complicated when you keep everything completely decentralized like Elastic (unlike the 2 projects you mentioned).

33  Economy / Economics / Re: Is Capitalism Flawed? on: August 12, 2017, 12:26:08 AM
capitalism is the best model out there.  To me the only caveat is that people still need to have compassion and help those in need.  Capitalism affords people to make that choice.  Hopefully, their moral code helps to make sure they do the right thing.

Wow...I honestly thought the bubble would have popped.  I was so wrong...but I'm glad I was as this is so entertaining.

Regarding the funding issue, and someone please correct me if I am wrong but the project has been progressing without funding for at least the last year? and if so, it looks like Elastic doesn't really need it for the project to move forward.

I think that two things are mixed up here. The project has no funding because there is nobody to manage any funds. But this doesn't mean that there have been no rewards. I guess that everyone of us has gotten generous gifts, donations, bounties or however you would like to call them. But there is a difference: there are no work contracts, there is no salary, there are no monthly payouts or anything like that. If someone gets something now, he get's it either as a voluntary bounty for past work, or because his horse mask selfie made some rich guy smile for a second and then go wild. Such bounties are NOT a payment for future work.

This essentially means, that everyone of us is willing to work on the project because it makes a shit load of fun - who doesn't like the great feeling after solving something really tough? People here do NOT work because there is a boss paying your salary and making you his own private snitch.

Some have gotten more, some have gotten less, and some are yet to get something maybe. But please understand why the funding discussion is silenced over and over again: nobody is required (or should be forced) to talk about his own funds to anyone else but the lawyer who does his tax reports (yeah, I admit that I pay full income taxes on everything that I get - this cuts everything down by 50% but better be safe than sorry!)

Also: My personal view is that results are mostly better if people are passionate about something that the results of people who are paid to work the "schedule". But this is just my personal opinion. Of course you can find examples in the real life which show the contrary - it's just an observation I have personally made very often.

I think its redundant to mention, that I would never accept any salary from anyone (not even a foundation) ;-) Neither would I accept anyone tracking my work and comparing against some schedules / roadmaps nor accept anyone telling me what to do! And this is the great thing about Elastic's project structure: if someone disagrees with what I do or think, he is free to do it better. Every contribution counts because we are all equal!

I agree with what EK wrote above; however, the one area we may not completely agree is on whether a foundation (or whatever it ultimately gets called) would benefit the project...

We see almost daily questions (between here and slack) requesting who can answer questions about the project, it's direction, marketing, etc.  Both EK and I have consistently said we are not interested in providing this project oversight / direction...we simply want to work only on coding the underlying engines.  I wish the project could have been a traditional open-source project where people just jump in and contribute how they feel best, but there seems to be a large learning curve with this project that may be a deterrent to people getting involved.

So it seems that there are 2 primary options...1) wait until the compute engine is complete and see if new talented devs outside the crypto world start taking notice and get involved as they identify ways to enhance Elastic to better server their needs, or 2) create a foundation that will fund a couple of key resources to start leading the project, document everything, manage websites / source code repositories, etc.

I believe option 1 will happen on its own, but may take quite a bit of time, and in the mean time we continually get bombarded with people asking the same questions over and over again.

But like EK, I'm not going to be part of running a foundation, nor do I want to be on the payroll of one (the community has already graciously given me quite a bit of xel).  So I am just throwing out my thoughts that I do understand the concerns that we see expressed here over and over...but this is really a decision for the community to make (not EK) and the community can act on it if/when they feel they are ready.

PS...regarding BaNgTHai's question above...I too fall under option B...completely incompetent...

Why was there created an own programming language? It would have been much easier to use an existing one.

You must clearly be smarter than EK and the others working on distributed computing via a blockchain.  I guess they are all doing it the hard way...too bad there wasn't anyone around like you to tell them they have no idea what they are doing.

I'll be looking forward to seeing your implementation of distributed computing via a blockchain.

I guess my updates to my github over the last month mean nothing...so yes, I guess it's stalled then.

If you have reservations about this great project move on to other things and free us from your presence.

This is the other thing I don't quite get with all these posts.  I've never claimed to be a good dev (maybe EK is...he could be a genius...or a High School student living in his mom's basement...who knows)...

But regardless, everything that has been proposed to date is sitting in the githubs for anyone to review...it can't get more transparent that this.  So anyone can look at what has been coded to this point and decide the following for themselves:

1) The code sucks and looks like it was written by a 6th grader....fine then go away and leave us alone
2) The code looks good but could use some improvements...great, we welcome the help, please contribute
3) The code looks great and is heading the right way...then just sit back and be patient while we finish it

I know I keep saying this, but for some reason the question keeps coming up every couple of pages on this forum.  There are NO paid devs on the Elastic project.  We (or at least I) have coded the parts I have, and will continue to work on it because I find the work interesting and feel that maybe the project could make a great contribution to the scientific community.  I have never asked anyone to be paid (nor have I seen any other dev ask).  If you want to see my stake in the project you can check the account in the OP for me.  I am grateful for those that sent the XEL to me, it was incredibly generous, but certainly not required.

But I am extremely tired of this conversation.  Hopefully someone can start a foundation that can have some paid people in it so everyone can finally stop discussing "who are the devs".  I don't wan't to be part of a paid foundation...I don't care if the paid people on the foundation do absolutely nothing...but at least you guys will have some people you can gather around like a soft little blanket to sooth all your concerns.
