31  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IDEA: coin for usenet on: May 20, 2014, 01:10:21 PM
I was digging around today on teh interwebz and I found something quite interesting: freenet!

It's a pretty interesting idea, it's kind of a network that can provide storage for all kind of files, and I was wondering, is there any coin that ever tried to store it's blockchain on it? or, at least, is that even possible?
32  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Coin ideas thread. Got an idea for a coin? Post it here! on: May 20, 2014, 12:54:58 PM
I got a pretty interesting idea: a coin for usenet! see here the thread....

I'm not a dev or something, but that would be awesome, so I'm trying to spread the world around...
33  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IDEA: coin for usenet on: May 19, 2014, 05:53:08 AM
yep, you're right, if they pull it off, it will get big, VERY BIG I would say.... Skycoin has a bright future ahead, but it will require a lot of development....

however, it is pretty different as concept by what I'm talking about here: I am wondering of a coin that will operate entirely on a network different than Internet, such as usenet, not one that aims to create a network that acts like a VPN, even if this is an interesting idea too....

I'm really curious btw, have you ever used usenet? I mean, is here someone that used usenet? sure here has to be someone...
34  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: IDEA: coin for usenet on: May 18, 2014, 09:54:55 PM
See Skycoin.

Looks like youll love it.

And take out the part about being good for scammers in the op if you want to pass a few pages in this thread

Fixed Cheesy

And yeah, Skycoin brings to the table some great ideas, but, it's bitcointalk thread isn't very popular, and some features like the their "standardized interface for transmitting and receiving coins (and other assets) held by third parties." and the price stabilizing system which are questionable...

plus, I don't like the idea that a big part of everything is controlled by the devs: the way the coins are distributed, the "standardized interface for transmitting and receiving coins (and other assets) held by third parties." and other things, which blows the entire fun (?) of having a decentralized crypto and makes the coin to depend on it's devs, which is a bigger flaw than PoW (Nakamoto just developed the Bitcoin system and the let it fly by it's own, just imagine where Bitcoin would have been now if it would have depended on Nakamoto's presence :|   )

as I see there, the Skycoin devs want to create a darknet that will be used in the same way VPN or TOR is used, I would say, why not create a darknet that holds it's own content instead of playing the role of a free VPN?

those are my opinions and conclusions, and I'm not sure if I understood everything correctly (in fact when we can be sure of that? ) so please correct me if I'm wrong, or if you think I misunderstood something....
35  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / IDEA: coin for usenet on: May 18, 2014, 02:25:24 PM
I saw so much altcoins coming out, but just a few of them really improving or innovating in some way, most of them only innovate by name, some not even by that (see ShibeCoin), and they die fast.

So here's an idea for any devs that runned out of innovating and name ideas: a coin for the usenet! All the cryptocurrencies are made to work through the internet, but there is NO CRYPTO to work on usenet, fidonet, meshnets and other alternative networks to the internet.

First of all, I'm not sure if it is possible to send coins through those alternative networks or if it is reliable, and I do know it would require a huge amount of dev work to create a wallet that works exclusively through those alternative networks!

Why would someone create an alternative coin for usenet or other alternative networks?
  • because it would be an ice-breaking coin, the first to address to other networks than the main and well-known internet.
  • because it would hit a new and untouched area of users
  • because it would make people on the internet and mostly in the crypto community that there exists less censored and surveilled alternatives to the internet
  • because it's the way to go!
  • because why not?

What are the obstacles?
First thing to know about usenet if you're not already familiar with it is that it works in a way more centralised way than the mainstream internet, and that everyone depends on it's providers, and I really don't know how a decentralized cryptocurrency will deal with a centralized network.
Second, in order to get acces to usenet you have to get a plan (for which, btw you have to pay) from one of the online providers, which can ban your account anytime if asked by any gouvernment.
However, a cryptocurrency would pair perfect with a meshnet, and given that The Meshnet Project is getting bigger, this would be a pretty good idea, and it would be a win-win situation in which more crypto users become aware of the advantages of the meshnets, and more meshnet users will become aware that the crypto world is something worth investing.
But when it comes to FidoNet, I can't say anything because I don't really understand what it is, however, I just thought it worth's mentioning...

Then why not create a brand new meshnet integrated with a brand new cryptocurrency?
EDIT: skynet is a notable mention here even if it hasn't been released yet...

So, what you think about my idea? I know I haven't did a very in-depth analysis of this idea, I just thought I should mention it here before I forget it, because I'm not a dev and I can't relly make it to become reality, and maybe someone will benefit off it...

btw, there are plenty of usenet providers that accept bitcoin, and there is some interesting content about bitcoin, but as I saw, there aren't any usenet newsgroups related to bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency, so it would be cool if we create one, is here anyone willing to send a message to the alt.config guys?
