Current Server Stability

As many of you already recognized, we experience some server stability issues recently.

In order to eliminate those issues whe migrating to a way more powerful server early this week.

More details will follow up soon. Thanks for your patience!

Can you add in DGM to your test?  I would like to know how my pool compares in a real world scenario.

LOL. Never heard of double geometry stuff till now. How does it work ?

Double Geometric Method was born here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=39497.0

And here is some FAQ content:
https://yourbtc.net/faq-page

Inaba uses different parameter on eclipse than me on yourbtc. Maybe both could be considered in a test. Definitely interested too.

There is no disagreement mate. We all know that PPLNS / Prop suck and that PPS is really the only viable pool system. Only solo is better when you have the power. People using Prop / PPLNS deserve to be cheater by pool hoppers, have a ton of variance and cheated by pool operator. Sheep do your research !

Indeed if PPLNS can be abused by pool hoppers I certainly need to do some research and switch to a better reward system. After all, stopping pool hoppers was the reason I went with PPLNS.

Could you please point me to some evidence or explanation of these facts so I can do my research properly? Or perhaps you can explain how it works yourself.

Why are forum admin or moderator remove signature of yourbtc.net from user profiles like mine?
I think this is really odd, since other pool signatures are still online.

Anybody got a clue why this is happening?

We just broke the 200 GH/s barrier today! I wan't to thank all member for this milestone!

Brand new server is comming up next week and a bunch of new features and improvements were made this week. I'll post a summary tomorrow.
27  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Poolserverj WORKMAKER EDITION RELEASED - 0.4.0rc1 on: November 11, 2011, 07:33:32 AM
Bitcoin 0.5 is the one BTC Guild is using.  4diff is completely pointless with the new PSJ (4diff was almost entirely used for massive getwork optimization, which PSJ doesn't even use anymore).

For namecoind, we used ArtForz's branch: https://github.com/ArtForz/namecoin

The only patches applied were the changes to the debug.log logging on rpc.cpp / bitcoinrpc.cpp to stop it from being too spammy.

Thanks a lot! Is ArtForz's fork of namecoind confirmed to solve nmc blocks?
28  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Poolserverj WORKMAKER EDITION RELEASED - 0.4.0rc1 on: November 11, 2011, 06:48:29 AM
I'am really interested in which daemons are currently recommended for 0.4 release of psj.

As far as i understood:
bitcoind 0.5 (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin)

Anyone got experience in adding the 4diff patch to this release? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=22585.msg596872#msg596872)
Does this patch even have any benefits since getwork rpc command is obsolete for current psj release?

namecoind

Which version is the way to go?

https://github.com/vinced/namecoin
or this one here?
https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin

Any patches that have to be applied?

Thanks in advance!

The pool has to run 100% flawless before more miners will come over...

Agreed.  With an average 3 outages a day over the last week I'd expect people to be leaving this pool in droves.  Given the fierce competition out there between the pools one can't expect a near future promise of stability to last for long.

Just ordered a REALLY nice new server for loads of new capacity, those outages will be history soon. This is a really expensive one but you are worth the money!

thanks for the response. Do I need bitcoind 0.50 for this to work properly?

I have setup pushpool successfully quite a few times, this is my first attempt with poolserverj  and I got it running but am having a hard time

You need a bitcoind with getmemorypool rpc call. Grab version 0.5 here https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin or apply an existing getmemorypool patch to a previous version.

Hi

I am also upgrading to 0.40rc1 can someone explain : source.local.1.p2p.hostport=localhost:8373
and what this does?

thanks

Yep: thats the port where bitcoind connects to the network (default: 8333, if you doesn't change the port in your Bitcoin.conf).

@urstroyer: I was too stupid to find the source code for 'com.shadworld.poolserver.conf.Conf.doDonationWarning()' at the bitbucket repo so I don't know what's happening there but good ol' strace -f -e trace=file ... helped.

Do this and psj will start.

Code:

touch /****/poolserverj-0.4.0rc1/tmp/donation.ack

Here we got! That worked, thanks a lot! <3

Some minor points on the charts:

- Credit History charts still have an old "Estimated Payout" label at the bottom.
- The geomap occasionally displays the figures on the colour key to a large number of decimal places.
- Credit History charts need a scale on the x-axis.
- The Namecoin luck chart could do with labels for the scale on the y-axis.

All issues fixed.

Can't reproduce the large number of decimal places on our geomap. If it happens again, it would be great if you could take a screenshot for me.

damn damn damn these rounds from hell!

Does anyone have a feel for how double geometric scoring affects round size based variance?

Out of interest, have you compared your average payout/share to a theoretical prop payout/share for the same round?

If anyone's not sure what I mean then just pick a previous long round and divide payout by your submitted shares. Then divide the Difficulty for that round by the total shares for that round (theoretical proportional pool payout). Compare and contrast. If you can be bothered I'd like to see the results.

You might need to compare a few sequential rounds rather than just one round. To do this, divide your actual total payout by the total shares you submitted. Then (assuming Difficulty didn't change between the rounds you are looking at) compare with (Difficulty*number of rounds)/(total shares in rounds).

It depends on the value of parameter o which every double geometric method pool chooses for his payout model:

Quote
o - Cross-round leakage. Increasing o reduces participants' share-based variance but increases maturity time. When o=0 this becomes the geometric method. When o->1 this becomes a variant of PPLNS, with exponential decay instead of 0-1 cutoff (note that "exponential" does not mean "rapid", the decay can be chosen to be slow). For o=1, c must be 0 and r (defined below) can be chosen freely instead of being given by a formula.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=39497.msg481864#msg481864

Maybe Inaba will make the parameter o - cross-round leakage public.

If you are interested how round size based variance goes with o = 0.5 send me a pm!

Also this week here are some exciting news for you:

- BTC block and converted NMC payments are now combined and send as one payment instead of two.
- E-Mail notifications about BTC payments can be disabled by every pool member (enabled by default).
- Added FAQ content for more information about how payment for both Bitcoin and Namecoin work.
- Lots of other cosmetic improvements and bugfixes on the web frontend.

Promise: I won't get lazy now, still a load of new features incomming over the next weeks!

Donation currently is set the same for both NMC and BTC.  I will spit it up so that you can set it individually.

As soon as I can find a reliable API for gathering the exchange rate between NMC and BTC, I will make the ability to convert available.

Hi Inaba,

if you are interested, i currently use this api for exchange rates:
