Great looking site and a much needed alternative to casinos.  Congrats on the launch and good luck on the future.

It's called a "Disaster recovery plan" Everyone should be discussing such scenarios, to know what to do, IF something like that, could happen. Smiley

Would 911 have a bigger impact, if emergency services did not plan for these type of disasters? It's always better to simulate, absurd scenarios, before they happen. And it looks like, these type of scenarios, are tested on smaller Alt coins, just to see, what would happen, and how it could be countered.

So let's discuss this and possible other scenarios.  Grin

Sigh, you're right (and reminding of work).  Based on the calculations Sonny provided (can anybody confirm those?  I'm not knowledgeable enough to peer review it) then a failover system should be considered.  Perhaps the question is not 'if miners go on strike?' but 'how would BTC continue to function if there were an interruption in block mining?'

Are there other scenarios which could lead to an interruption?  Short of a global EMP strike, of course.

1. Regional power outages:  most countries employ some type of redundancy & interconnectivity for their electrical grid.  Even if a massive power failure results it may take a day or so to restore.  Probably not a major concern but could easily disrupt transactions depending on where the major mining hubs are.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_grid
2. Mining Hubs:  speaking of mining hubs, GHash.io and the others all depend on physical hardware to do the mining.  In the event the center is compromised or physical hardware damaged there's not much of a failover for this.  Unlike data which can be backed up in a redundant data center in another city, these hubs are susceptible to many types of disaster.

any other scenarios?

HAHA, exactly what my first thoughts were!

Good luck.  If it weren't for the adult industry VHS would've never won out over BETA and the internet wouldn't be what it is today.

Add "-i 1" to your .bat file.  What it does is to free some bandwidth for the system, and as a result the card should get a little cooler.

--interactive    [-i] list of flags (0 or 1) to enable interactive desktop performance on individual cards. Use this to remove lag at the cost of some hashing performance.  Do not use large launch configs for devices that shall run in interactive mode - it's best to use autotune!

26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How do I utilize Hyper-Threading on my CPU? on: June 18, 2014, 08:00:08 PM
What I'm aware of is you can set the miner to use a certain amount of cores but I'm not familiar with hyper-threading having any additional input.  What processor specifically are you using?
27  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: how to choose devices to use in cgminer? on: June 18, 2014, 07:39:14 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you remove the bad GPU (#3) and restart then the GPU's get re-labeled and #4 becomes the new #3, right?
28  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Will Bitcoin ASICs like Block Erupter/ANTMINER work on other sha256 currencies? on: June 18, 2014, 07:14:45 PM
In addition, you can still mine scrypt/x11/x13/vert with your GPU if you're just plugging in a few USB ASIC miners.  I haven't tried running a cpu miner like minerd at the same time but my guess it'll work too since it can run concurrently with a scrypt/x11/x13/vert miner without the USB ASIC in the mix.
29  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What can I try to mine with this hardware? on: June 18, 2014, 07:10:41 PM
Another option that just occurred to me, if you're not sure what coin to mine just yet try leasing out your miners in the meantime.  Ebay is full of mining contracts of all degrees and the cost to lease is generally more than the current market value of any coin out there so you're at least making some progress towards ROI.

Is this the one that does SHA & Scrypt either simultaneously or independently?

I'm not a Doge fan myself but there are others here that could tell you why it's a good coin.  I will say it does have a good community.

I prefer KARMA personally but it's all debatable.

To "know" what is a good coin you'll have to do a lot of reading & research.  Weeding through the spam posts on every announcement post to find the real substance of why a coin will or will not be successful.  I can't give you that answer, but I was constantly reading for about 3 months before I even created an account to this site.

Mining a newer coin that you see value in personally is a good idea.  I came across the KARMA team and what they were working on when it was low priced/low diff.  I thought to myself, this is definitely I can see myself getting behind, they've got bigger plans than others I see.  It's jumped in value 2200% in the last 3 months.  So find the coin that you can get behind, support it by mining, get involved with the community, and if it's really worth it and others see the same value you do then the exchange rates will reflect it in time.  Keep an open mind about things though and don't expect to get rich overnight.  This is an uphill battle and money don't come easy.

Note to self:  this is not a blatant advertisement for KARMA, just using it as a personal reference for example.

Good luck mining!
31  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how should coin developers be remunerated? on: June 18, 2014, 06:16:46 PM
block tax 1% of every block. If they stop working on the coin it's forked and that tax is cut off or pushed to an address of a new developer that takes over and works on the coin.

premines and instamines need to be stopped at once.

As somebody who's about to implement all of the ideas from these threads I feel an idiot saying it, but 1% is too high. 0.25% (0.125% + 0.125% locked) as mentioned before is plenty.

Plenty of pool sites charge a 1% fee to mine through their site/stratum.  Perhaps 1% is too high for a developer but I do like the idea of a block tax because it incentivizes continued development and support.  If a developer initiated a block tax of 1% from onset we may see less pools jumping onboard until the difficulty rose to a point that solo mining was highly inefficient (which of course depends on the algo/miner hash rate/network hash rate/exchange rate).
32  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Using a minimum wage job to earn BTC? Is it worth it? on: June 18, 2014, 04:07:38 PM
There's some flaws:

Minimum wage is not the same in all countries. Some countries don't have min. wage at all.

Minimum wage is in some countries adjusted for age (for ages under 23)

People may not be able to find a job

You'll have to pay income tax

You'll have to pay for rent/mortgage and food, clothes, electricity, gas, etc.

Most people can't afford even 1btc/month next to their expenses I'd guess.

All valid points and I'd only add:

In addition to paying income tax we're supposed to also pay capital gains tax on any monies made from BTC (initial price vs fiat sale price) according to the IRS (US only).

36  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone heard about this company Xidax on: June 17, 2014, 10:47:22 PM
I dunno, never heard of them myself but good for them trying to tap that market.  They accept payment in BTC & DOGE so at least they're supporting their own cause.  Some of the components look overpriced (the Hyper 212 cpu cooler) but others are pretty fair (the additional GPU, $5 extra for a 1TB drive).  Plus they've got the Lifetime Warranty in effect which is something you always pay extra for.  Guessing that's about $3-400 of the upfront cost.  That's not saying anything about how their warranty process is when/if you need to use it.

Plus in the long run it does pay for it self in a few months. All you have to do is get on a highly efficient multipool.

Yeah, I'm not backing you on that claim.  But if you want a decent gaming rig that can also mine and is all under a lifetime warranty...then I see a market.  Probably not on the bitcointalk forums though.  I would guess most folks here are DIY'ers when it comes to building a system.

Love the idea.  Would be interested to see if any other multipools follow suit.  Or is this not new?

You could sell stuff. Think about some garage sale type items you have and set a low price.  Smiley

Definitely going to look into this this weekend.  At the very least to help spread adoption of the currency even if it means within the community itself.  Online garage sale here we go!
