21  Bitcoin / Hardware / Heatsinks on Antminer S19j Pro+ on: April 22, 2023, 06:59:57 PM
Someone recently shared pictures of heatsinks on the newly released Antminer S19j Pro+.
There's a separate heatsink for each chip here, instead of the large integrated bolt-on heatsink on other S19 models.
Does this look like we're back to S9 style, or did Bitmain go back to the notoriously unreliable S17 style heatsinks again?

22  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Best place to buy a miner help on: April 20, 2023, 04:35:14 AM
The answer to that depends on many factors like Phil mentioned.
If you're looking for rock bottom prices, your best bet is to buy directly from a Chinese wholesaler. Some of them have high MOQs, so they may or may not work for you.

At AltairTech we are a US based mining retailer.
We also operate our own mining farm and provide competent technical support if needed.

Is there some liquid nitrogen involved here?
24  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Anyone building hotter exhaust temp ASICs? on: April 06, 2023, 03:22:08 AM
Those Bitcoin Maxi Carnivores are going to love this Brisket idea!

But I was thinking more along the lines of converting thermal energy into mechanical or electrical if the exhaust was hotter.
Actual implementation of anything like this is going to take 100s of millions of dollar or even more, so not really expecting anyone to just come up with a solution.
But if we can motivate an ASIC hardware manufacturer to have recoverable heat that can be converted to work, that will be huge.
It will also address some of the environmentalist's concerns who think Proof of work mining is doing useless work and just converting electricity to heat.

25  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Anyone building hotter exhaust temp ASICs? on: April 05, 2023, 03:54:48 AM
I understand that the efficiency of current ASIC chips drops drastically at higher temperatures, so increasing exhaust fluid temp seems like a bad idea.
Current ASICs designs are all essentially treating exhaust heat as a nuisance that needs to be discharged.
While this has worked in the past, as this space evolves, anyone who is able to reuse the 'waste' heat will be more competitive than other miners.

The relatively low exhaust temps that we see coming out of ASICS, has restricted the use of this energy to space heating, drying type of uses.
If the exhaust temps were much higher, you could run an engine off of it, to produce mechanical or electrical energy from it. Those are forms that are easier to transmit and store.

Current Silicon based semiconductor and PCB designs can handle much higher temps than <85C temp that's recommended on Antminer S19. In fact, Antminer S9s used to run much hotter than the new-gen miners.
New semiconductor substrates like GaN, SiC & GaAs might be able to sustain even higher temperatures.

26  Bitcoin / Hardware / Anyone building hotter exhaust temp ASICs? on: April 04, 2023, 10:21:47 AM
Recovering exhaust heat from ASICs can add additional revenue streams for Bitcoin miners.
As mining becomes more competitive, this becomes increasingly important.

Carnot Efficiency is the theoretical maximum % of the energy that can be recovered from a heat source.
Current ASICs exhaust heat at a much lower temperature when compared to Steam Power or Internal Combustion engines.
This limits the Carnot efficiency & usefulness of exhaust heat.

Is anyone building ASIC miners with a hotter exhaust temp & better heat recovery potential?

27  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BB Controller Board in S19XP? on: April 04, 2023, 09:55:36 AM
If you look at the available firmware for S19 XP, Bitmain currently does not provide one for Beaglebone Control Board.
The only available firmware is for xilinx 7007, AMlogic and CV1835 CBs.
Since there is no bitmain firmware for Beaglebone CB on S19 XP, you won't be able to run bitmain firmware if you install a beaglebone board.

That being said, the lastest version of BraiinOS v23.02 for S19 XP works on beaglebone boards. They meant to support it for xilinx 7007 as well, but this was somehow missed.
We are running performance tests with BeagleBone CB on S19XP as you can see here

There's another thread for R909.
Sidehack has previously mentioned that if it's a zombie device/0 chips type issue, it's probably hardware related, and you should talk to your reseller for a remedy.

Supplemental cooler for Gekkoscience base USB Hub

I've been working on a way to cool the Gekkoscience USB Miners. There are several heat-sink mounted coolers available, but they focus on cooling the heatsink.
The backside of the USB miner and the hub itself can get pretty warm at higher clock frequencies. 419 Mining has an existing base hub cooler design available, but I wanted to improve upon that.
So I designed this jig that I'll call 'IglooHat'. It is made with 4x 3D printed legs that attach directly to a 120mm case fan using 35mm M4 screws. The fan runs off of the 2-pin fan header on the side of USB hub, so does not take up any of the USB ports.
The legs are designed to clip-on to the side of the Gekkoscience USB hub, to make sure the jig remains attached to the hub in case it is accidentally bumped.
The design is open-sourced so you can 3-D print your own.
We do have these up for sale, if you don't want to 'roll your own' Igloohat.
Community feedback is welcome!

PS: This does not provide enough cooling to be a replacement for heatsink-mounted coolers. This is focused on cooling the backside of USB miners and the hub itself. In my experiments, this is only useful when you are trying to overclock >550 mhz or with >4 compac f sticks on the hub.

Does anybody actually power this pod miner with a barrel jack PSU, instead of a plain computer PSU?

Yes, it works fine with 2.1/5.5 mm barrel jack PSU. Those are rated for upto 8 Amps, but I've gone upto 10Amps on 2 different 2.1/5.5mm barrel jack PSU's without any problem.
It is safer to run it on a PSU with 6-pin PCIe connector though, specially if you plan to overclock it over 120 Watts. Those are rated for much higher currents. For example on an antminer S9 , 9x PCIe connectors deliver 1650Watts. That's about 15 Amps per PCIe connector.
31  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Ways to pay for bitcoin mining operation on: February 27, 2023, 03:40:48 AM
If you have the power and rackspace, you could start out by hosting for others and use the profits to buy your own miners.
32  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience has a new stickminer that does 300+GH on: February 09, 2023, 03:54:26 AM
Did you try to overclock without sufficient cooling? This might be a burnt regulator.
33  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience has a new pod miner, just in time for Christmas on: January 28, 2023, 05:55:41 PM
I was thinking about ways to push this beyond the 2.4-2.5Th reported by other users.
One way could be to use a bigger fan and adapter to funnel more air CFMs into the pod.
For example a 120mm or 140 mm fan can push 2-3x air through the heatsinks, while still staying fairly quiet (<25db).
I've seen some s9 space heater designs (skip to page 9) that are replacing the stock 120mm fan with 140mm fan to allow the machine to run quietly without compromising on cooling.

Would like to know from others here, if this makes sense and is worth a try.

34  Bitcoin / Hardware / Looks like a scam - gekkoscience.org on: January 24, 2023, 05:17:42 PM
Stumbled upon this website upon googling 'compac f'. Looks like a pretty brazen scam.
Don't lose your bitcoin to them.
35  Bitcoin / Hardware / New CV1835 Control Board on Antminer S19 XP on: January 22, 2023, 10:08:50 PM
Bitmain used Xilinx, BeagleBone and AMLOGIC control boards on S19 series of miners. Three different makes created a lot of hassles for anyone trying to overclock, run aftermarket firmware etc.
It appears that they have now introduced a 4th model to the mix and this one looks like a Bitmain in-house design. It's the CV1835 board. One of our recent S19 XP came with this board.

more pictures here.

Needless to say that more board designs will create more hassles for miners, firmware developers, and resellers. Buyers often want to purchase machines with specific CBs and there's no way to tell until you open the factory-sealed box.

I'm looking to understand Bitmain's rationale behind using so many different CB models from others here. It can't be a shortage of Xilinx boards, because Bitmain has had those on sale on their website for a long time and people can purchase as many as they like. Is this just an attempt to thwart the development of aftermarket firmware?

just realized this was supposed to come out 6 months ago. Guess this was vaporware.
Sigh!
37  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: At-Home miner from Moon Labs - for Solo Miners and Bitcoin enthusiasts on: January 22, 2023, 01:03:23 AM
Hi guys!

I am proud to announce that our small team is almost finished with the development of a silent, tiny, powerful, energy efficient, Mac mini-sized Bitcoin miner - Moon Miner! Ideal for striking Crypto Gold in Solo Mining or just for experiments with Bitcoin.

Super Happy to see new hardware for home mining. This sector is largely ignored by the big mining companies.

Few questions for you
1. What's the background of the founders and team here? Can you guys do PCB assembly as well as your own chip design if you had the funding to fab it?
2. Are you self-funded? Anything you can share about funding and ownership helps.
3. Since you mentioned 'crypto', are you planning hardware for non-SHA256d algorithms too?
4. Any way to get early samples for testing or review?
5. Is your company and team based in US?
6. Will your design need a separate computer to run, or will it have an inbuilt controller in it?

Hello, I received a compac f from gekkoscience but it does not work, even after installing the correct drivers and the correct cgminer, it is marked as inactive, in the device manager it is displayed as FT232EX could you tell me enlighten how to repair or diagnose it please?

Thanks very much

Probably best to contact your reseller for support first. If they are unable or unwilling, you could get help here.
39  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac / Terminus R606 (BM1387) Official Support Thread on: January 16, 2023, 03:36:53 AM

Windows 10 sucks forever. Unless you've messed with the stick voltages (or there's no fan on them), there's no electrical reason they'd run that poorly. Every stick is tested to 200MHz on stock before it ships, and most of 'em will do upwards of 400MHz on stock voltage if they're kept cool. That's why I put a fan header on the hubs.

Please tell me you got a fan on 'em.

Was going through this thread and noticed this post about 12V fan header on the Gekkoscience hub.

This could be pretty handy for plugging in a fan big enough to cool all the sticks on the hub. The trusty arctic breeze USB fan which was quite popular in the past, has been discontinued by the manufacturer so that's another reason for looking at non-USB options.
I don't think I've seen anyone post pictures of their cooling setup using this header. Curious about what type of fan and assembly works best with this. Top-mounted or side-mounted fan? Anyone have any pictures to share?
I might do a custom design if there aren't many good solutions with this header out there, but thought I'd check here first.

Try opening in a new browser or in incognito mode.
Sometimes browser caching causes these issues.
