21  Other / Meta / Re: RFC: new forum software specifications on: October 12, 2011, 10:44:13 PM
So we should add this to the spec for the new forum software:

  • No zero-day exploits and/or architecture which makes it easy and fast to patch such exploits
22  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Woolong Financial on: October 03, 2011, 11:34:47 PM
Do you have any prototypes of it in action?
In a month or two.

What will this prototype actually do?

Obviously my sculpting was not in vain.

Obviously.
24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Poll about bitcoin tipping on: October 01, 2011, 12:07:20 AM
I'm curious how much actual "tipping" goes on in the forums and the bitcoin community in general.  Have you tipped?  Been tipped?  Not been tipped?

Please choose one option from the "soliciting" options and one from the "giving" options.

edit: sorry, I decided to add a couple more options, so I hope I didn't screw up the choices of whoever voted while I was doing that.

1. I am not sure If you comprehend just how many totally BASIC (no ponies & gadgets, just the basics) features modern forum systems (such as PHPBB) have. It is year of work at minimum for 3 experienced people to implement PHPBB's engine in a secure, performant way. And I am not even talking about the plugins - that's different story.

1a. I know it LOOKS easy. But it totally isn't. Building a good piece of discussion software is a tough job, and other teams (PHPBB, MyBB, IPBB, vBulletin) had years and years and years to perfect their engines. You are simply **NOT** going to produce anything better in a short time (unless you are genius or something). Period.

No, of course it's not easy.  But this community is made of highly competent people, many of whom are developers, some of which already have experience hacking on forum software.  So I think we have a leg up there.  Nobody said we're going to make something better than vBulletin in a short amount of time.  We'll make something more targeted to the features we want, instead of compromising by using off-the-shelf stuff that lacks certain things (why do you think this thread was started?  because there exists no forum software that has it all).  You start small, with a core set of features, and you make changes incrementally.  You write the code in a way that is extremely easy to modify, just as specified in the OP, so that you can make complex changes without much trouble.

Quote
2. Another point is that people coming to the forum will expect certain set of features they encountered on other forums. If we don't have them, the forum will simply suck donkey arse from the point of view of users.

So we should implement those features.
26  Other / Meta / Re: RFC: new forum software specifications on: September 29, 2011, 09:27:59 PM
Trust me, advanced board systems such as PHPBB, vBulletin or IPBB offer sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many features that you are never, ever going to catch up with them.
The point is not to catch up with them, but to implement the specific features you want.  Those systems are behemoths with all manner of silly features and plugins.

Quote
Also, it can be really difficult to avoid security holes, unless there are many very very experienced people working on it.
We have many very very experienced people here, as you can see by looking at the development forum.

Also, they can be optimized to be blazingly fast with advanced caching systems using memcache & ramdisks.

If you read the spec in the OP, it explicitly says "well-optimized", so I think that's covered.  And adding memcache to a site for additional performance is trivial.

27  Other / Meta / Re: RFC: new forum software specifications on: September 29, 2011, 08:13:42 PM
start from scratch? that really should not be necessary.

Absolutely necessary?  Maybe not.  A good way to get the features you want?  Definitely.  If you have hard and very specific requirements, no off-the-shelf software is going to meet them all.  Custom development is the way to go, and there are plenty of people here who have the skill to implement a simple message board system, as well as plenty of people here willing to donate to the cause.

To that end, I have set up this donation address for some of the project costs: 1H43Z8YHwn7bX67T5eNzwbGRcFATExr7am.  If you support this effort, please give whatever you can.  My first order of business will be to commission a logo.  Does anyone want to throw their hat in the ring for CEO?

Well seeing how the system would be automated...

...it would automatically send the "sorry, we don't have enough money to pay out your winnings" messages?
29  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS] Domain: playcasinobtc.com on: September 27, 2011, 10:59:17 PM
That's not technically true... guy down in texas did actually buy a bulbasaur off me because he wanted to introduce his cousin into pokemon.

I stand corrected... your second transaction.  Good to hear.

Live and learn, right? Not bring up past and smudge it in my face infront of everyone.

Well, if you want the truth, I think it's kind of important for anyone considering whether to frequent your online casino to know the history.  I certainly wouldn't trust you to pay out any winnings after that sad showing in the other thread.
30  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS] Domain: playcasinobtc.com on: September 27, 2011, 10:37:27 PM
After all, if you cannot even afford to present an offer that admits the current owner some modicum of dignity, how do you hope to afford the considerable expenses of beginning a successful business?

Did you by any chance read the thread about logansryche's miserable failure at running a trading card store, which involved the only sale he ever made going south because he didn't actually have the merchandise, and he didn't have enough cash on hand to process a refund (which would have been about $10)?

Either way a online casino will be built.

What's stopping you from starting to build it now before getting a domain name like a normal person would?
33  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS] Domain: playcasinobtc.com on: September 27, 2011, 08:30:14 PM
The domain name should be the *last* step in starting your casino.

Yes, there are far more important things to do, such as naming a CEO, coming up with logos, deciding whether your bevy of programmers should use web 2.0 or web 3.0 technology (I suggest 3.0), setting up a forum, ordering up business cards, designing some "under construction" graphics, "hiring" a VP of Marketing (working for equity only, of course), writing up a mission statement, ordering a copy of "PHP Illuminated", etc etc

"future posterity" = I just found a thesaurus.
"graciously accept" = clumsy and doesn't quite mean what you think it means. Perhaps you mean gracefully? Gratefully? Other people may view you as gracious but you cannot declare yourself such.

I am always goddamn sure of myself when I am wrong. I am happy to be wrong because I am one ounce less ignorant. I take it in pride. Go ahead, hang your head down and cry in shame when you are defeated if that what life is to you; mere suffering. I will retain my happiness and continue trying to achieve it to greater heights.

Humility is for suckers who need provisioning from the crowd. I already have the joy I need.
"I take it in pride." Stride
"Go ahead, hang your head down and cry in shame when you are defeated if that what life is to you; mere suffering." This sentence is contorted.
"I will retain my happiness and continue trying to achieve it to greater heights." Ditto.
Provisioning makes no sense in that context.

This is snarky but valid feedback, Atlas.  The way you write makes you sound like you're emulating someone who's prone to flowery, absolutist, and grandiose language (and I think we know who that is), but that you don't have enough experience with the way people actually talk to pull it off.

edit: You can point to Stephen Fry's argument about creative use of language all you want, and it has validity, but at some point you're just using it as a crutch for ignorance, not creativity.  If someone said "I is good with langwidge" and then trotted out Stephen Fry, claiming it was perfectly clear what they meant, we'd call that person an idiot.

What Silver? LTD Inc.
38  Other / Off-topic / Re: Whoever said Atlas was probably one of those jackasses... on: September 23, 2011, 04:01:45 AM
Various teams dropped out. I may have counted them in my original calculation.

Counting people who don't show up is a clever angle.  I got a B in Differential Equations, but I'm in the 99th percentile if you count all the people who didn't even take the class!
39  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS]BitCard Domain on: September 23, 2011, 12:47:22 AM
I'll go 50% over asking if I can pay in McDonald's gift certificates.  Logansryche, you haven't indicated whether you're even considering it.  Should I quit offering?
40  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS]BitCard Domain on: September 23, 2011, 12:23:58 AM
Is there some reason you want it in BTC, but you set the price using a USD-to-BTC conversion tool so the actual BTC amount changes dynamically?  Would you just accept $12.10 for it?
