21  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin mining on a laptop in 2024 on: May 09, 2024, 09:59:04 AM
No, you will die before you mine a block.
22  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Will I be easily hacked? on: May 08, 2024, 01:54:52 PM
If your phone connects to the Internet at any moment, it is no longer cold storage.
To be safe, you must ensure that your private key was generated with sufficient random entropy (more than 126 bits) and that the seed has not and will not connect to the Internet.
To ensure that entropy is sufficiently random, a well-reviewed wallet such as Electrum should be used
Instead of converting your old phone to cold storage, especially since you may not have technical knowledge, why not buy Passport hardware https://foundation.xyz/passport/
23  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Analysis of April’s Decline in Bitcoin Mining Output Amongst North America's Lea on: May 08, 2024, 01:36:16 PM
If an average of 144 blocks are mined per day, we get about 4,300 blocks per month. If we assume that the average return from a block is 3.3 bitcoins, then the monthly return is 14k bitcoins, and without transaction fees, 13,400 bitcoins. The company mined 148 bitcoins in April. This is a percentage of 1% and therefore will not affect the price of Bitcoin if Hut 8 stops mining Bitcoin.
24  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Atomic swaps research BTC XMR pair BTC ETH pair on: May 08, 2024, 10:39:43 AM
If you continue this approach, your account may be banned, long texts may be ignored, and you advertise in the wrong board.
The only way to use the service is to download an application, and many people may not want to download random closed source software.
Liquidity provided by programmatic market makers means that liquidity depends entirely on the number of users. If you do not have a sufficient number of users, the service will be slow and some orders will not be executed.
25  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Cipher method to encrypt recovery seed words using a unique key: seed-otp on: May 08, 2024, 10:15:51 AM
The code has not been updated for 6 years. The description to solve the problem is to have the OTP key and seed mnemonic stored separately. Instead of this case, there are more reliable options, such as using a 2-by-3 multi-signature wallet, which requires two signatures to broadcast the transaction, which gives us more diverse options than the OTP key and seed.
26  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor CoinJoin RIP on: May 06, 2024, 09:52:35 AM
Are some people just allergic to decentralized services, even when they know that such services respect their privacy as compared to centralized ones that just sell them off to  the regulators?
Although running a full node is the first step to privacy, for the average user it is a lot of complexity. Users are looking for an online service, send bitcoin, get mixed coins, so the use of mixer has been popular.
Decentralized services are slow and have limited liquidity, and the level of privacy that people are looking for is hiding transactions from friends, not the deep level of privacy.
27  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: So I tried buying a shared miner and results are surprising on: May 06, 2024, 09:46:43 AM
Circlehash does not have a good reputation, so it cannot be trusted with real investment.
They may offer mining devices and give you profits, but there is no guarantee that they are doing real mining. Do you get mining pool data and the blocks that were actually mined, or do you get a circlehash balance and then withdraw it?

I will avoid Circlehash and will buy bitcoin or ask friend to buy miner than trust Circlehash

28  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will happen to BTC if Government gets involved? on: May 06, 2024, 08:23:26 AM
Government shares part of profits you makes from bitcoin, so they accept it, but they want to know the details of all transactions (to take a portion of them as taxes) and impose centralization on conducting transactions.
The first part began with the attack on privacy services, and if they succeed in that, they will move to mining pools. They will try to force them to adhere to the ban lists and blacklists.
29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Regulations Not Working as Planned?? on: May 05, 2024, 06:34:08 PM
So far, the regulations have not addressed Bitcoin as a protocol.  regulation happens at the level of mixers, and central services. The Bitcoin protocol, mining, and decentralized services are still working without government interventions in how to implement them.
If governments decide to centralize Bitcoin, they may not succeed in doing that, but its value will be much lower than the current value, and the blockchain may be weaker due to the limited hashrate.
30  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: importing public keys, derivation paths and zero balance on: May 05, 2024, 06:25:49 PM
why do i see zero balance? i had some funds in it.
why don't i see the addresses that i previously used?

Search for the addresses in the block explorer. If there are no previous transactions, then the problem is most likely with derivation paths.

Since you did not generate xpub (in this case we call it Extended Public Key and not master private key) using electrum, you will need to modify the path to:

Code:
 m/49'/0'/0'/49'/0'/0'/0

This is assuming that we are talking about Legacy address.

What are you trying to do here? The easiest solution is to sync Bitcoin Core and then create a new Electrum wallet and send bitcoin to it.
after that export your master private key a.k.a watch-only wallet

31  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin advertisements are a bit outdated on: May 05, 2024, 05:55:38 PM
This topic was discussed last August https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5462123.0

Both information seems outdated but yet they are still valid.
The developers themselves modified the text in 2014 and we talk about Bitcoin Core
Bitcoin Core still (intentionally) contains a line that says "this software is experimental". The line saying that Bitcoin Core is beta software was removed in 2014.
32  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor CoinJoin RIP on: May 04, 2024, 06:05:26 PM
The above news came as a surprise to me [Wasabi part]... I was under the impression that the zkSNACKs coordinator's behavior towards certain UTXOs would be enough to separate them from the rest, but I was wrong.
I thought so, or at least they would let them work in exchange for providing some data on suspicious transactions, or at least submitting them to the courts. Everything they do will push towards a decentralized coinJoin or Monero.

I wonder whether JoinMarket has the enough power to survive the current "tsunami".
JoinMarket is decentralized but they will try to target market makers to reduce liquidity.
33  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: If you can't afford to pay for electricity don't do mining on: May 04, 2024, 03:54:36 PM
Before looking for illegal electricity, review the legal status of Bitcoin. According to this article, Bitcoin is banned in Ghana.

Quote
Is cryptocurrency banned in Ghana?
Cryptocurrencies are banned in Ghana. Earlier this year, Ghanaian authorities reiterated this position, stating that the country's financial institutions are instructed not to engage in crypto-related transactions.
https://www.mariblock.com/ghanas-sec-sets-up-committee-on-crypto-regulations/#:~:text=Cryptocurrencies%20are%20banned%20in%20Ghana,engage%20in%20crypto-related%20transactions.

In addition to electricity, mining requires space, cooling, and noise reduction, which makes hiding a mining farm with dozens of devices very difficult.

It can be done easier with one miner, but it is better to buy Bitcoin.
34  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Principles Of Bitcoin on: May 03, 2024, 06:25:05 PM
Your principles need explanation. I read this several times and could not understand them:

Quote
Censorship Resistance: There should be certain resistance to power or individual from preventing valid transactions from being confirmed.

Quote
this principle state that there should be no requirement for IDs to access the network.
Isn't this a product of decentralization? Mining pools can request KYC before listing your transaction or block or not accept certain transactions, but as long as the network is decentralized, you will find the memepool accepting your transaction.

Funny how despite been reading or learning about Bitcoin and stuff, I have never read the white paper until today.
I do not know what the source of these principles is, but it is better to read the white paper. There are translations of it into most languages.

Principles of Bitcoin must be Bitcoin protocol and bitcoin Protocol features is Security, Unauthorized spending, Double spending, .... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin_protocol

35  Economy / Economics / M2 money supply turns positive on: May 03, 2024, 05:17:35 PM
The Fed has restarted printing money

More money and inflation are what the price may need now to rise strongly.
Will this have an impact on Bitcoin?
36  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Public Bitcoin API Faucet on: May 02, 2024, 02:25:15 PM
blockchair API is free if your requests are limited, and the paid service is for those who want more requests.
moofetch.mooo seems like a new service and it is difficult to trust it, especially when there are other available options.

LoyceV also provides such data https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5265993.0
37  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Help with a bit of information on mining history on: May 01, 2024, 12:46:40 PM

I read conflicting statements about that, hard for me to grasp but some guys talked about stopping mining when at a loss being even more of a loss, I understand that this would have been the case for companies not home miners but at the same time I don't think one could get their hands on the accounting sheets of a large company.
Companies that manufacture mining hardware do not mostly do mining, but rather offer hardware and solutions. BITMAIN manages the Antpool mining pool, which allows everyone who has a mining device to participate.
here is information about mining companies  https://companiesmarketcap.com/bitcoin-mining/largest-bitcoin-mining-companies-by-revenue/

Core Scientific and Marathon Digital Holdings are the largest companies with revenues of $0.50 B and $0.38 B.
38  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Blockchain synchronizing issue.... on: May 01, 2024, 12:26:45 PM
Update the app to the latest version, and if you have more than one account, Account#1 2 3 4 5, make sure that they are all synchronized.
Check the balances in Electrum > show addresses and then compare the addresses with their balance in Mycelium.
If the problem is not resolved, copy the about > logs and paste it here.

40  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Help with a bit of information on mining history on: April 30, 2024, 11:04:09 AM
- Is it safe to consider a miner with extremely cheap energy keeping on mining with an old but still profitable gear till the gears fails?
Mining is a business activity. If you can get old gear at a low price, immediate delivery, and have cheap electricity, it will be better than buying the latest equipment and waiting several months.
Miners cannot mine at a loss, everything must be carefully calculated.

Bitcoin Mining Museum[1] can partially answer your question. That website contain history of Bitcoin mining along with popular hardware at certain time.
Thanks for the link, I did not know that BITMAN had USB Bitcoin miner BITMAN U1,U2
