Advocates argue that Bitcoin has the capacity to address not simply money issuance but other crucial questions of trust, financial privacy, transparency and freedom of expression.

Critics claim that Bitcoin's inherent anonymity encourages money laundering, gambling and drug dealing. They also point to its wild volatility as evidence that it functions as a poor store of value that will make economic activity ultimately less productive.

At this Cybersalon we will be asking what have we learnt from Bitcoin and where is it heading:

Bitcoin Background

Bitcoin (which is now known as a “Crypto currency” or Hidden Currency) has fluctuated from $0.0001 to US $1,200 in the span of 5 years. Advocates cite its capacity to be a truly global, digital currency- to lower remittance and cross border transfer costs particularly with regards to developing economies and its power to remove politics from the money supply. Its main attraction, they claim, is that all other banking and monetary systems are ‘pre-internet’ technologies but Bitcoin offers us the potential to build an entirely new system of global financial consensus, even acting as a global reserve currency.

Bitcoin 2.0

The value of the Bitcoin platform is that it can be used for other means than as a currency: for instance to transfer goods directly from person to person around the planet securely without third party verification. The way Bitcoin does this is through what is known as a peer to peer network, with these transactions being verified automatically by thousands of so called ‘Miners'. Bitcoin is not a company, and whilst Miners might act like employees, it was designed as an open standard protocol similar to http (web pages) or smtp (email), allowing anyone who wishes to to build companies, services and software to interact with it, and because Bitcoin functions a little bit like TCP/IP, owning a Bitcoin is akin to owning real-estate on the new internet, similar in some ways to owning name brand dot coms in the ‘90s.

Was Bitcoin und Online-Handel verbindet

Sie sind einfach nicht totzukriegen, werden sich jetzt klassische Bankinstitute denken. Während der Handel, angetrieben durch den E-Commerce, immer digitaler wird, wehren sich nicht wenige gegen eine reine „digitale Währung“, wie die Bitcoins. Finanzminister, Wirtschaftsinstitute und nicht zuletzt Banken warnen ständig vor der Nutzung der Bitcoins für den Handel. Doch in der Vergangenheit hat sich gerade der Online-Handel davon nicht irritieren lassen und immer öfter Bitcoin als Zahlungsmittel integriert. Aber warum?
Bitcoin sind eine Erfindung des Internets

Dell ist das aktuellste Beispiel für ein Unternehmen aus dem E-Commerce, das Bitcoin als Zahlungsmittel integriert hat. Nach den Online-Unternehmen Expedia und Overstock, hat der Computerhersteller Dell in dieser Woche Bitcoin in seinem Online-Shop eingeführt. Die Argumente von Dell dafür: Die digitale Währung bringe geringere Transaktionsgebühren als beispielsweise Kreditkarten mit sich, das Bitcoin-Konto ist an keine Finanzinstitute oder Banken gebunden und niemand könne Konten willkürlich sperren.

Argumente die man oft von Online-Händlern im Zusammenhang mit den Bitcoin hört. Overstock.com war einer der ersten großen Online-Händler, welcher zum Ende vergangenen Jahres die Einführung von Bitcoin in seinen Online-Shop angekündigt hat. Damals argumentierte Overstock-CEO Patrick Byrne aber noch gar nicht mit den Vorteilen der Bitcoin gegenüber den etablierten Zahlungsmitteln.Bitcoin sind auf dem Vormarsch.

Overstock.com sah sich vielmehr als Vorreiter in Sachen Bitcoin und wollte das Risiko auf sich nehmen, um eventuell dadurch einen Pionier-Bonus einzufahren, trotz der Warnungen von Geldinstituten, wie der Deutschen Bundesbank. Diese sagte damals im Tonus der vielen Kritiker: „Bitcoins sind doch überhaupt keine Alternative zu unserem Geld.“
Die Vorteile für Online-Händler werden immer deutlicher

Und trotzdem vermeldete Overstock.com wenige Monate nach der Einführung der Bitcoin einen großen Erfolg. Innerhalb von nur 24 Stunden konnte Overstock mit den Bitcoin Bestellungen im Wert von umgerechnet 124.000 US-Dollar verkaufen. Ein deutliches Argument gegen alle Kritiker.

Inzwischen scheint das Eis für Bitcoin nach wie vor nicht gebrochen, doch allein im Online-Handel ist die Liste an großen Namen gestiegen: Shopify, Newegg, Expedia, Airbaltic und nun auch Dell akzeptieren Bitcoins. Und neben den großen Unternehmen, gibt es zahlreiche kleine Online-Shops die Bitcoin akzeptieren. Einer Erhebung von Statista zufolge sind aktuell umgerechnet Bitcoin im Wert von 8 Milliarden US-Dollar im Umlauf. Keine andere Kryptowährung kommt nur ansatzweise an diesen Wert heran.

Nicht wenig spricht dafür, dass Bitcoin in Zukunft noch populärer werden und gerade durch die Nachfrage im Online-Handel den endgültigen Durchbruch schaffen. Medienkollegen empfehlen bereits auch kleinen Online-Händlern die Einbindung von Bitcoin, schließlich lägen die Vorteile auf der Hand: Die Gebühren sind für Online-Händler deutlich niedriger als bei Kreditkarten oder anderen traditionellen Zahlungsmitteln, Kursverluste werden durch Bitcoin-Dienste wie Coinbase aufgehoben, Zahlungen können von Kunden nicht zurückgenommen werden und mit Bitcoin lassen sich weltweit Einkäufe tätigen.

Es ist also kein Wunder, dass der Online-Handel, der sich per se gegen konservative Handelsvorstellungen durchgesetzt hat, auch bei der Währungspolitik eine Vorreiterrolle einnimmt.
