21  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin x64 for Windows on: July 28, 2010, 03:24:30 PM
if the unofficial bitcoin crashes, does it lose any progress it has made and have to restart from the beginning of whatever it was working on?

yes, i'm a bit of a thickie, still not quite sure of the internal workings  Roll Eyes
You won't lose your balance, but it will have to start over. It already starts over each time a new block is found, so at most you'll lose a few minutes spent on the previous block.

thanks.
that's a relief Cheesy

the script works fine.
only one problem, when bc crashes, windows puts up a box asking do i want to close the program and search for a solution online, or just close the program.
is there any way of bypassing this? because the script comes to a halt while this box is waiting for input from me.

If you're using Windows 7:

Control Panel
(If your Control Panel is in noob Category mode, go to System and Security)
Action Center
Change Action Center settings
Problem reporting Settings
Never Check for solutions (not recommended)

otherwise, go google it with your OS + "disable error reporting"

had tried that.
damn thing had turned back on again!
see if it stays off this time Smiley

edit:
will try the solution/s in this thread:

ran great for me the first 18hrs then crashed, has been crashing since every once in a while. I am using the script posted to keep it up and running. I have not generated any coins either but, the difficulty per block has jump again recently.

I'll send BTC 0.02 to anyone who visits the following articles site:
http://quezi.com/
and scrolls down to the bottom of the page (6 articles). If you're interested in the articles you can read them, but it's not compulsory. Then post your Bitcoin receiving address here, or send it to me in a private message.

i thought the anti-teen noise was most interesting.
i've got one, so i can't think why hehe  Grin

edit:
got that, thanks!!
up to 5.02 bitcoins now. woohoo  Cheesy

mind if i ask?
satoshi has released a couple of updates recently, mostly about security concerns as far as i can see.
how are the 64bit versions keeping up with these developments? Smiley
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: blkindex.dat on: July 21, 2010, 05:31:21 PM
As of right now, if blkindex is where the blocks are stored, then the file will grow infinitely large over infinite time.

scarey biccies!!  Grin

seriously, there must be some limit as to how large it will get?
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / blkindex.dat on: July 21, 2010, 04:40:06 PM
just curious,
the blkindex.dat on my pc is currently 28256 kb.
according to bc, the number of blocks=69456.
i'm assuming the blkindex.dat file will continue to grow?
how big is this likely to get.

29  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 0.3.1 release candidate, please test on: July 15, 2010, 09:22:18 PM
The listreceivedbyaddress and getreceivedbyaddress commands are duplicated in bincoind help. (Same in 0.3.0.)

yep!
i'm sure they are!!
already said, i haven't a clue!
what on earth are you talking about???
30  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someday, soon.... on: July 15, 2010, 09:07:05 PM

33  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Someday, soon.... on: July 15, 2010, 07:07:11 PM

34  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 0.3.1 release candidate, please test on: July 15, 2010, 06:38:50 PM
Are there any errors maybe in dmesg or the syslog (usually /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog or something like that)?  It's hard to diagnose without seeing it first hand, sorry.

on a windows machine here. sorry!
any better pointers?
i'm re-installing .3
this update isn't quite working lol Smiley
35  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 0.3.1 release candidate, please test on: July 15, 2010, 06:23:17 PM
I don't think you have a particular problem, I think your system is laggy because you're running a lot of things at once and hitting the pagefile because memory is full.  You confirmed when you shut off generation that your CPU drops to 0%, so the CPU usage is definitely all idle priority.  There's nothing in the 0.3.1 that would affect these things.

possible.
but, and i'm NOT being offensive here, this sort of performance lag has only appeared while i'm running bitcoin.
and BOINC is active, but not running any projects at the moment.

3gig memory,
cached 1524,
available 1573,
free 108.
not going to stop bitcoin, but it does seem a bit strange Smiley

anything you would like me to send?

ps...
haven't noticed any extra disk thrashing while bitcoin is running Smiley
36  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 0.3.1 release candidate, please test on: July 15, 2010, 05:32:54 PM
on this end,
hasn't helped.
still same symptoms, but can't set to belownormal. access is denied!!

edit:
strange,
firefox and windows explorer open quickly enough, bit laggy, but the likes of gomez doesn't!
37  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 0.3.1 release candidate, please test on: July 15, 2010, 05:25:33 PM
Well, it can't hurt to do a backup and it's a good idea to backup regularly, but no, a backup is not required before installing this.

okey dokey Smiley

been crunching away for a couple of days now, don't want to start all over again!!!!
38  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 0.3.1 release candidate, please test on: July 15, 2010, 05:11:49 PM
hi satoshi,
are there any back-ups need to be done before installing?
39  Other / Off-topic / Re: Good anti-virus tool ? on: July 15, 2010, 04:40:28 PM
I think that avast requires 'registration' ?

AVG Free is a 'Top Ranked' anti-virus. It won't cause any issues with Bitcoin usage and it's my choice for a free Windows Anti-virus.

yes.
in a way.
asks for your email address.
never had any spam coming my way from them though.

or any other sort of email come to think of it!

personally, don't like AVG.
don't think it's as good as it's cracked up to be.
not my own personal experience.
but from people who have had it installed, and it didn't work that well Smiley
40  Other / Off-topic / Re: Good anti-virus tool ? on: July 15, 2010, 04:25:22 PM
you could try avast anti-virus?
i've installed that on a couple of systems.
seems ok!

plus, it always helps to have malwarebytes anti-malware and ccleaner.
