Be careful... one of the mods here is linked to bitmain's code. I had posts deleted for saying things along these lines. You'll be "hushed" up.
22  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S5 power suply on: January 09, 2015, 05:49:51 PM
Generally want 21% more watts than what it pulls at the wall and only if you don't plan on overclocking or volting.
Very efficient PSUs may need less margin but for the price not a bad idea as it will run cooler and more stable with 21% overhead.

Quite correct and power supply efficiency is not typically linear, and most will have their best efficiency way under 100%. If you intend to run at 100% or near, a server based or something with a long warranty would be ideal.
23  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: XBTec Pacific V3 3.2Th, 0.8W/Gh on: January 06, 2015, 05:37:25 PM
Plus look at that constant 2500 watt power load, you would be hard pressed to even run this thing on a home outlet.

Do remember that the US has unusually bad circuits.

Dogie, an ignorant statement like that, makes me wonder the level of knowledge you are relaying through your numerous (paid via amazon associate tag) reviews. As an electrical engineer having lived in the U.K, Australia and the U.S, I can say the worst electrical circuits and standards are by far in the U.K. Australia follows close behind with some of the best located in the U.S. I'm not saying the U.S excels overall, and I can name many areas they could improve on, following international standards for example, yet when it comes to residential and commercial circuits, the U.S cabling has a higher over rating than others by far.

Are you.... are you honestly trying to argue that the USA's
110V 20A (16A 24/7) =  1760W
is better than the UK's
240V 32A (36A 24/7) = 8640W
for bitcoin mining?
and that equals a bad circuit? No just different designs.
So basically because the USA uses 120 vs UK's 240 it has bad circuits?
The more shit I read from you just confirms it's just shit.
anyone competent or with a big enough wallet can easily rectify their electric situation in the USA.

My original comment [2 months ago] was in reply to a user saying that 2500W was not possible to run at home. I replied, mentioning that the US isn't the only county in the world and not everyone in the world has 110V 20A [16A] circuits. Ie, plenty of people could still run 2500W at home. I'm also not seeing how you can argue that

110V 20A (16A 24/7) = 1760W isn't worse than
240V 32A (36A 24/7) = 8640W

Just an FYI all homes in the USA are 240V.  Every house has a two single phase 120v drops from the grid, if both wired to a plug you get 240v from the 180 degree offset on the phase, if you only use one you get 120V and the other leg gets wired to ground/nuetral.

I am sure you might be able to find a house that was built when Tesla and Edison were still alive and it might be 120v, but for 99% of the home grid upgrades have given everyone 240V in their homes.

Very easy to change a 120v plug to 240v move the nuetral to the other hot leg with a 2 pole brealer and change the plug on the end to a 240V prong and presto 240V in the USA at your house.

I too debated this with dogie a while ago. He is based in the U.K so has little first hand knowledge. He argued that most have no idea and the standard was 110v. The best way to describe the layout in the U.S is split phase 220. ie. 110 each split phase. (source, electrical/electronics engineer in the U.K, Australia and the U.S). As long as we aren't talking about 3 phase (which is becoming more common around the world in domestic premises), most single phase power supplies will work happily at home. I say most as some still have the tendency to produce that magical smoke at near full loads.

I supposed these $10 U2's are one of the cheapest ways to get your feet wet on the Bitcoin madness.
Any serious mining rig is going to cost some serious bucks. At $10 a pop, it's a nice educational tool for someone to get a taste of what Bitcoin mining is about.

When I had a small mining farm (12 Antminer S1's) in the garage, my kid asked me what are all those machines doing? (lots of blinking lights, fan noise, and heat). I couldn't explain it the way a young person could understand. So I gave him an explanation that isn't exactly true, but easily understandable:
"You know how people have solar panels on their houses to generate electricity? Electricity costs money. So if they generate electricity themselves, they make making money. These Bitcoin machines are kind of similar. When they are running, they are making money."

One of the quickest ways ... (for today's gen with short attention spans)

25  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread 0.26$/G Free Ocean Shipping on: January 04, 2015, 09:14:46 PM
10% discount has been offered to Second Hand S3+, 0.241$/Gh with free ocean shipping and MOQ is 100 units Smiley

What good is a 10% discount and free "ocean shipping" if buyers wouldn't get their second-hand S3s until after a month or so from order date?

I guess the original MOQ of 500 units didn't get any bites, hence the reduction to 100.  No surprise there.

You gotta do better than that, Bitmain.  After all, you most likely have already made lots of BTCs running those S3s in your farm.  Don't be greedy and share a miniscule portion of potential returns to the community.

exactly. Don't forget, Bitmain now have a very large percentage of mining revenue. They are directly competing with YOU and lets be honest, they will always take the highest profit they can. The only choice you have today is a company that doesn't self host or design your own miner.
26  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S4 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 04, 2015, 08:59:40 PM
10% discount has been offered to Second Hand S4, 0.3465$/Gh and shipping out within a week after full payment Smiley
This is a good deal people. You cannot buy this much hashing power for this price anywhere in the world. Bitmain consistently out prices everyone. These S4's will be good to run for 10 months at least with underclocking later on.  We need 50 more S4's. P.S. Thanks for the rapid PSU replacements. We had several go out right away and Yoshi took care of us fast. GO BITMAIN

No offense, but sounds like fan boy speak.  How do you know they'll be profitable for 10 months?

Also remember S4s don't work well on all pools.

And they are prone to drive failures because of cheap components.

In other words, you get what you pay for.

M

Have to agree. The ONLY reason you'd want to buy an S4 at that price is if you had FREE power and a guarantee for replacement power supplies and Fan's for the next 10 months.
27  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: A sucker born every minute on ebay on: January 03, 2015, 11:21:34 PM
I know a few teachers/professors who whilst teaching about cryptocurrencies, they would bring in small ASIC examples, power them up and hash away. Naturally some of these items would "disappear" so anything cheap that worked was logical.
28  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Large Bulk Buy of Second Handed ANTMINER S3+, $115/unit, free ocean shipping on: December 31, 2014, 08:44:06 AM
Well, seems BMT changed things but are still giving us a bit of a big FU !

https://bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=00020141015100808946Nj1LM03y0650

$149 MOQ 2 = $300, Gee BMT thx for pulling out the broom handle a bit but it's still stuck up my ass pretty good.

300 + 135 to ship = 435 you may as well buy the s-5

yep. 2.56 S3's are required for same GH. =
$385
$135 shipping (for 2 only)
520 Total

vs

S5
$408
$47.90 shipping
455.90 Total

Include efficiency, it makes no sense to buy the S3's at a higher cost than the s5's. You are actually losing money.
29  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: December 31, 2014, 08:07:36 AM
it's the same format as s1, s3, sp20.... the more power it consumes the more ventilation it needs, resulting in higher decibels Wink

anything can be made to run silent, it only depends on your skill and the money available Grin

Firstly, Kudos on a great post Philip!

The form factor, the power cables still enter from the now open top. Ether on the end. With plastic sides, this makes, the form factor is rather different. Almost impossible to stack the s5's?
The SP20 has the edge here, fully enclosed and easily stackable with cables all on one end.

It sounds as though Bitmain and the s5 followed AM's one fan option to dump a lot of heat. We know that didn't work out too well long term.

With the small price difference, lets be honest, I'd prefer something that is a Ferrari, over a plastic sided heater.

An afterthought, cooling is easier also on a large scale with stackable single end entry.
30  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 Review--Purchased on: December 31, 2014, 07:53:16 AM
now you have seen the S5 naked Grin

From the consumer point of view, what would you expect from S5 or wish for?

(Not including lower price...)

Would you rather pay $15-20 more on quieter fans (same hashing power but better fan or fans?

Personally, I would much rather pay $15-20 more for a S5 with the same form factor and dual fans as the S3.

In my opinion, the S5 looks pretty cheap without a top cover on the case and the noisy fans are a deal breaker for me.

I was optimistic about the S5 before the reviews starting coming in so I'm a bit disappointed and will probably go with more SP20s.

IMHO, the only downside of the SP20 is the noise, so if Bitmain can solve that issue with the S5 they will probably have a winner on their hands.

Have to agree. From memory, didn't Bitmain at one stage talk about covers on the s3, how it was beneficial for air flow over the non-covered s1?
31  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 review on: December 31, 2014, 07:44:47 AM
I'm happy with it at 400M. Any higher starts getting hardware errors which doesn't improve performance.

i dont get much HW errors, but hashrate seems to peak at 412MHz, at 425MHz its back down around the same speeds as at 400MHz
Can you try it at elevated voltage and see what happens?

not sure how to easily do this without a PSU capable of 13V at >60A, or even colder intake or higher airflow. temps are 55/53C with the back end of the heatsink reading about 33C where it contacts the PCB. using a cheap infrared thermometer, readings on the PCB range from 45-65C

I thinking he may be suggesting an adjustment in the software setting voltage (ie, as in the advanced settings on the S3+'s new firmware), I don't think the S5 has that option.
No, I was suggesting upping the actual voltage. Klondike uses some server PSUs and many of them can trim the output voltage a bit.
I have a few big adjustable supplies, but there's probably some leeway there for adjustment.

I was actually blowing off my deck today and wondering what -20C air fed through a gas powered leaf blower would do. Smiley
Don't try outdoor fed air, too much moisture unless filtered somehow.  May work for awhile but eventually leads to corrosion.

Unless of course you live where the humidity is typically <30% on average. Temps year average 12c. Hint... take a look at where all the new (google, facebook, etc) data centres/centers are located.
32  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 review on: December 31, 2014, 07:41:47 AM
Hi Syke,

Thank you for the review posting!!   Cheesy
I understand you're imitating our marketing techniques, but why did you copy the miner loudness ?  Grin Grin Grin

so both of you could afford a beer at the end of the day Tongue A way to cut costs... hearing is overrated from a designer/engineer perspective. Cost from a managerial perspective.
33  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: UPS backup on an s2 on: December 29, 2014, 01:28:54 AM
How long are the outages you're trying to bridge?

not even 5 minutes....most of the time, less than 1 minute.

I stand by the APC 3000VA UPS's on ebay. Cheapest option for decent reliability. The downside, the batteries will need replacing every 3 to 5 years.

Alternatively you could invest in remote power point/outlet, so if the S2 doesn't reboot correctly you can force a power cycle on it.

I've had s3's after a brown out, that will "mysteriously" keep the IP network settings but reset the mining config to bitmain's. So when you walk past them, they all appear to be working but in fact, they are farming for bitmain, not you. 2 ways to fix that, a monitor on each worker from the pool you are using, and/or add specific routes to your router to redirect or null route bitmain's default mining config.
34  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Fans for ANTMiner S5 on: December 28, 2014, 10:40:05 PM
I need some quiet fans that would have enough airflow for the S5.
Nice play on words for your title Tongue I was expecting a fanboy thread XD

Likewise... however on topic, reducing the airflow with a quieter fan, you may end up only fanning the flames.

If anything perhaps bitmain could suggest a mod for two quieter fans to replace the stock single fan which would surely increase heat dissipation across the entire miner.
35  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Got Some Money - What To Buy on: December 28, 2014, 09:53:24 PM
Hi,

Buy hashing power directly, Mining immediately after payment
https://www.hashnest.com/

You must be desperate,  to give so stupid advice.
Antminer S2 for 1.125 BTC Huh

Go ashamed of yourself, you have lost your credibility as representative of the Bitmaintech company in my eyes.

Yes, of late bitmain employees have been getting rather desperate in both their sales techniques and support or lack there of. Easy to ignore them.

As pointed out by Roadstress, the only decent miner on the market for the low end is the sp20.

Just remember, no miner is future proof and new miners are due out soon enough in the new year.
36  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: The New Standard, 0.51J/G, 1155GH, Jan 8th shipping [Sales Open] on: December 28, 2014, 08:59:23 PM
since the fixed chip voltages limit modification without variable PSUs

this caught my attention.  'variable PSUs'.   Do they make a psu that you can limit the amount of voltage unit will draw?

I have not been able to change the wattage draw from the S3.  I also purchased an S5 to see if it is any better....

Unless you are looking at purchasing a large quantity of psu's that can go down to 9v, it is simply both a waste of money and too expensive to being with. If you intend to throw the power supply away in a few months or think that bitmain will build all their new miners around the variable voltage supply design, then go ahead. However it's not an industry standard so if will be difficult to sell those power supplies in the future and likely won't work with any other manufacturers.

- KnCMiner 16nm 0.07W/G early 2015
- Cointerra 16nm 5X (?) Q1 2015 (5X refers to their TerraMiner IV I guess)
- Bitfury sub-0.1J/G mid-year 2015

When i will see intel and amd have a mature desktop cpu at 14nm, then! and only then i will believe those numbers!

The smaller we go the harder it is!

Just a shot in the dark:  under .1w/g in 2016!

I think it will happen in 2015.

It will likely be possible, but being possible and being the shipping clocks for a product is another thing. Maybe we will see both, maybe just one.

My money is on Bitfury and SP-Tech

I concur. SP is the most transparent for both upcoming tech, support and refund policies. They continue to keep the industry notified and always respond usually within 24 hours to anyone's comment.

Whilst other competition is coming along nicely, they aren't transparent and simply don't communicate keeping us up to date. We get an email once a week if we're lucky, usually once every 14 days or so. This level of communication isn't satisfactory in today's highly competitive market.

If AM could either hire additional staff, or devote more time themselves, that could answer our questions, openly and in a timely manner, then they are likely to receive a warmer following and brighter future. SP is the leading example in all these areas. Bitmain towards the top, now falling like a stone. AM whatever you do, don't follow bitmain's example, rise above, communicate with us and show us what you can offer.

38  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Spondoolies SP20E Jackson review by 2GOOD on: December 27, 2014, 05:46:04 PM
I got my SP20 a little later after some problems with the Customs, not believing that I can get something for free.

You have to love bureaucracy and the pessimistic nature of those that work there.

Kudos on a great review!
39  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: The New Standard, 0.51J/G, 1155GH, Jan 8th shipping [Sales Open] on: December 27, 2014, 05:43:01 PM
Please keep in mind people, this is Bitmain's product discussion thread. While excessive harassing of members isn't acceptable under any circumstance, it is especially not acceptable in someone else's thread. I'm sure Dogie doesn't mind talking to reasonable people about whatever issues people are having with him, but please do not do it here. Don't clutter the thread making information harder to access for those that want it.

SaltySpitoon,

Firstly, thank you for your input.

However, if I am to be accused of something I have not done on a Bitmain thread, by someone who is paid by Bitmain - I believe I am, at the very least, entitled to an apology. Is that so unreasonable? I think not. I'm sure that you have read the circumstances of my request in this thread - if it were to happen to yourself, would you not want an apology? As genuine & appreciated as BitmainWarranty's & Yoshi's apology was, it's not the same, and until dogie realises the errors of his ways, the situation will continue & indeed probably get worse - weather it is with me or any of the other forum members he's seen fit to abuse or insult on Bitmain threads. It has gone too far already - & needs to be nipped at the bud.

Sorry, but my request still stands.

Exactly!

When the defenders of the dastardly run their mouths, they are indeed condoning his abhorrent behaviour.

Notice how they are happy to change & avoid the subject when its proven beyond a doubt that he/they are in the wrong.

Shilling at its finest - and lamest.

You are using a broad net with your accusation. Perhaps you should focus your energy towards getting your grievances remedied.

Sadly at some point there are people in this world that are not worth spending time and energy on. As you can see, many here have meet these people and are done wasting our lives with them. The only solution is to make others aware of this problem. We are done with condescending and terse replies from people like Dogie and others.

40  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: The New Standard, 0.51J/G, 1155GH, Jan 8th shipping [Sales Open] on: December 27, 2014, 05:35:55 PM
Righto, thanks. I doubt anyone goes out of their way to trust my opinions, but I really like Bitmain gear (for disclosure, I own about 15 undervolted S1, run an S2 Kit and an S3) and I can't recommend the S5 until I trust a few things have been taken care of. It'd be really nice to have gotten ahold of one of those evaluation units, but then a thousand other people could say the same thing.

the big fear is will behave like Asic Miner"s tube or prisma.

I owned both of them and both   had current/heat runaway problems. very hard to keep stable.

Once I get the test module I can

A) undervolt it with 1 psu.

B) over volt it with another psu.

C) volt it perfectly with a high quality psu.

D) sent 11 volts to one board and 13 volts to the other board. using 2 different psu's

E)Set a low freq

F) set a high freq

G) add the higher quality silverstone fan for cooling

The s-1 and s-3's I have had were all good or very good. 1 dead ethernet and all else good out of 30-35 units.

I have read problems on the s-2 the s-4 the c-1 but I never had one of them to test

I own quite a bit of Bitmain gear, and I can say with confidence they will not make gear as bad as Asic Miner makes..

S4's catching fire. My Asic Miners (not the prisma line) are more reliable and less smokey. Point being, each brand has it's issues and they all go through various stages. The exception seems to be spondoolies as they are clearly frontrunners.
