21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Transaction fee on: November 21, 2017, 09:07:36 PM
Hello,

My wallet recommends a fee of 0.00020000, which is about 1.6$.

Is that a okay fee?
How long will my transaction take?

Bittrex has added Bitcoin Gold now.

I will use this link, it's semms safe, i can use Coinomi to claim my Bitcoin Gold

I'll answer your questions because i came by them.

1. I can send my Bitcoins and after i have sent them, i can claim my Bitcoin Cash/private key? My private key is not connected to my Bitcoins but my wallet.dat file right?

Yes you can, like mentioned earlier, you need the private key for claiming them. Your private key is connected to your bitcoins and bitcoin cash, but they are on seperate chains now so sending funds on other chain won't affect the other.

2. If i remove my Bitcoin app on Ledger, and then reinstall it, everything is there right(with same adresses and private key)? And the same goes for every app/coin that Ledger supports?

If you mean removing the application from your computer, yes. The seed on hardware wallets is stored on the hardware wallet and not the computer.
You'll save every private key, unless you wipe the hardware wallet but it's highly unlikely because there are many warnings before being able to do that.

1.
Good, i will get my private key from the link i posted earlier. But before that i send my Bitcoins to Ledger.

2. Thank you!

3. I see now that they have Bitcoin Gold app, can i claim them same way as Bitcoin Cash?
24  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S and a few questions on: November 18, 2017, 05:18:59 PM
Perfect!

just two things i need to check with you.

1. I can send my Bitcoins and after i have sent them, i can claim my Bitcoin Cash/private key? My private key is not connected to my Bitcoins but my wallet.dat file right?

2. If i remove my Bitcoin app on Ledger, and then reinstall it, everything is there right(with same adresses and private key)? And the same goes for every app/coin that Ledger supports?
25  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S and a few questions on: November 15, 2017, 07:39:42 PM
I think i understand now,

My Bitcoin Cash is "inside" my private key? They are still there if i move my Bitcoins and get a new private key for just Bitcoin?

If this is correct then i don't even need to claim my Bitcoin Cash now, if i save my private key i can claim them in a year if i want? Same goes for Bitcoin Gold? i can claim them with just my current private key when it goes live?

I thought my current private key was useless if i moved my bitcoins to Ledger and got a new key.

So then i just send my Bitcoins to Ledger and use the link below to claim my Bitcoin Cash

Before August 1 i used Bitcoin core wallet, i have a wallet.dat that is encrypted. i don't have a seed(if you mean words for a password)
27  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S and a few questions on: November 15, 2017, 02:24:54 PM
I think you have misunderstood what i meant.

This is the step i want to take.

Version 1.

1. send half of my Bitcoins to Ledger from Bitcoin Core wallet

2. Split/claim my Bitcoin Cash(half of them) like in the link(i want to split my Bch in my ledger, i am not gonna use another wallet)

https://coinsutra.com/bitcoin-cash-ledger-wallet/

3. move some of my Bitcoin cash to an exhange

4. Leave both Bitcoins and Bitcoin Cash in my Ledger

5. Buy another Ledger

6. Move the rest of my Bitcoins + Litecoins and Vertcoins to Ledger number 2

Version 2

1. send all of my Bitcoins to Ledger from Bitcoin Core wallet

2. Split/claim my Bitcoin Cash like in the link(i want to split my Bch in my ledger, i am not gonna use another wallet)

https://coinsutra.com/bitcoin-cash-ledger-wallet/

3. move some of my Bitcoin cash to an exhange

4. Leave both Bitcoins and Bitcoin Cash in my Ledger

5. Buy another Ledger

6. Send half of my Bitcoins, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and Vertcoins to Ledger number 2

Can i do it like this?

28  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S and a few questions on: November 14, 2017, 10:45:20 AM
Thank you so much for the answers!

Just recieved my Ledger.

Two more question.

I have my bitcoins in a wallet.dat file(using bitcoin core). Can i first send my bitcoins to Ledger and then claim my Bch(my private key is the same?)or do i need to claim my Bch before sending my coins to Ledger.

Can i claim Bch in pieces?
Lets say i move 0.5Btc to Ledger and claim 0.5Bch and then repeat that step?

The best thing is to first send the BTC to Ledger, and then claim BCH. Why? Because you have to use your private key to claim the BCH.

So, yes it is possible to claim in pieces, but because of this security risk I suggest to first send all BTC and then claim all BCH.
When you claim your BCH with your private key, also send them immediately to another wallet (or if you prefer to sell it, to an exchange), again because of the same risk.

What if i want to claim like 50% of my Bch, Ledger has a specific wallet for Bch, isn't that safe?

What if i send my Btc to two different Ledgers, do i get two private keys?

30  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Ledger Nano S and a few questions on: November 03, 2017, 11:30:46 AM
So i have just ordered a Ledger Nano S, i just want to get some answers on a few questions.

1. If i lose my Ledger nano S(the device), is the coins lost forever?

2. What happens if Ledger goes out of buisness?

3. Can i accidentally lose my coins? For example resetting the Ledger?

4. If i move my coins before the 3rd hardfork, do i still get segwitx2 coins?

5. Can i use the link below to seperate Bitcoin from Bitcoin Cash?
https://coinsutra.com/bitcoin-cash-ledger-wallet/

6. i have for example Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash on the same ledger do i have two different passphrases? Is it better to buy two Ledger instead?

7. Can i "test" my passphrase?

Hello again,

I want to claim my BCH, as you know i have my BTC in a wallet.dat(Bitcoin Core)

Is it safe to use the method below?
Do i need to send my BTC to a new wallet with new private key after or is it safe to have the wallet.dat i have now?

https://medium.com/@itsjameswhite/how-to-claim-bitcoin-cash-from-bitcoin-core-to-a-full-node-wallet-de661b8e7dda

What you need to do to spend your ABC coins is to just make a copy of your Core wallet.dat file. Then install the Bitcoin ABC client and put your copied wallet.dat file in the place where you want the ABC datadir to be (do this before starting ABC). Then start ABC and let it sync. When you want to spend your ABC coins, just use the ABC wallet. When you want to spend your Core coins, use the Bitcoin Core wallet.

I downloaded the wallet but it's saying no block source available

What should i do?
33  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: August 1 and Bitcoin core wallet on: July 20, 2017, 06:24:12 PM
Yes the best way is just to take your private key. Nothing more than that.

Anyways good luck keeping your coins till 2020

I don't have a sell plan really, maybe i switch a small amount to altcoins.

If Bitcoin live i will have most of my stash left at 2020.
34  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: August 1 and Bitcoin core wallet on: July 20, 2017, 04:58:46 PM
Yes, i have hold a long time, never sold. Remember Bitcoin was at about 6-10 dollars at the time i get em.
Sadly i have smalla mount.

I just have the wallet.dat, don't have the private key separate.

Aboy 70% synced now.
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: August 1 and Bitcoin core wallet on: July 18, 2017, 08:56:22 PM
The private keys are in the wallet.dat file right?

I have multiple wallet backups!

You cannot just save the priv. key and import where you want?
Even if you can't, In case of a fork your coin will be available in both chains, because you don't spend meanwhile.
So even for what I know you are safe, "like a cold wallet" if you don't spend any satoshi.

Okay, yes i have all Bitcoins on a wallet.dat, and have not touch them since 2012.

So if i don't spend any coins i'm safe?

Thanks!

You should be fine as long as you have the private keys.  Please make sure you have several backups of the wallet too.

You can always export the private keys and use a lite wallet to manage them, even without being fully synced.

Hello,

I downloaded the Bitcoin core wallet a few days ago. In case i need to move my bitcoins to a wallet the supports
both chains.

This takes alot of time, i don't know if i will have the wallet fully synced Aug 1.

So what i really wonder, is there any litewallet that support same wallet.dat?

Thanks!

Thanks for the answer.

You say the keys are stored on my device. Where? I guess i need to make a backup in case the harddrive brake?
39  Other / Beginners & Help / wallets without wallet.dat on: June 03, 2017, 08:39:10 PM
Hello,

How does these wallets work that doesn't have wallet.dat file. Jaxx for exampel.

When you make a backup you get 12 random words, these words have no numbers or special letters.

- The backup most be at Jaxx, what if jaxx gets hacked?
- Why not make the backup on the computer so you can be your own backup, like a wallet.dat?
- What if the company is a scam and just quit?

Some coins have wallets with wallet.dat, Etherum Classic doesn't seem to have that.

In my opinion it's seems pretty unsecure to have these kind of wallets.

Can anyone explain why this is so popular?.

Thanks!
