21  Economy / Economics / Re: Milestone reached: Market cap > 100M USD on: August 04, 2012, 11:05:49 PM
So I think hedge funds might start to get interested when the market cap is $1 billion. Here's why....that would let a fund take a $5 Million position and still only have 0.5% stake. Enough money to be interesting without risking obliterating the market when they want to exit the position.

24  Economy / Economics / Re: How the Tobin Tax affects markets. on: August 03, 2012, 04:06:36 AM
True - the market would be far more stable if gox charged 0.05% transaction fee and a $10 monthly fee. THey'd even most likely make more money.
25  Economy / Speculation / Re: how long did it take to go from $10 to $30 last time? on: August 03, 2012, 04:03:16 AM
does anyone remember?

Just a few days.  The super bubble coincided with a bitcoin article in Wired.com and the first popular media mentions of Silk Road.  My bet is many people took the new media interest as a strong buy signal, but as we saw it lasted only a few days.  At the time of the super bubble there were people claiming they would be surprised if we ended 2011 below $100/btc.  We barely stayed above $2 towards the end of the year.

Enjoy $10+.  Hope it lasts.  Be prepared to dump everything if the price shows a significant downwards trend.  You don't want to sell in angst at $2 again.

At $2, I don't sell a BTC and I buy another 10K USD worth.
26  Economy / Speculation / Re: how long did it take to go from $10 to $30 last time? on: August 03, 2012, 01:32:45 AM
I hope folks are a bit more educated and wont panic sell like last year. I wish my crystal balls worked. Much better infrastructure all round now and less FUD.

Screw your crystal balls - you need to work on getting everyone some brass ones so no one causes a panic.

Why? I originally theorized he was laundering for a cartel. SR is much less hazardous. And far less hazardous to my bitcoins.

Oh boy.
Dread Pirate Roberts
pirateat40

coins sent to silk road go to the fat address
the fat address has a strong pirate taint

there was a withdrawal from that address when pirateat40 (unauthenticated) said he moved the market

Here we go Shocked Shocked Shocked

Does that mean his ponzi wont default any time soon then? lol

There's something wrong when suspicion of involvement in the drugs trade would make you more confident about investing money with someone  Wink

29  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Why trust GLBSE? on: July 29, 2012, 04:26:22 PM
The general risk and counterparty risk can be lessened by a few things.

1. Don't leave BTC at GLBSE. - Buy what you want and withdraw your dividends.
2. Use 2 factor auth. Seriously, turn it on.

3. GLBSE could release shareholder account info to issuers along with a selected BTC address for the shareholder, which would let any share continue to pay dividends in the event GLBSE is no more.

4. GLBSE could sign statements for each shareholder on demand, giving each user similar security.

Any "theft" of a security can be rolled back, and with limited depth of market, it's hard for a hacker to liquidate a large position.
30  Economy / Economics / Re: LIBOR scandal on: July 29, 2012, 04:42:03 AM
It's worth noting that this "scandal" kept interest rates artificially low. You paid less credit card interest, lower variable mortgage payments, lower almost everything. The British banks say "you're welcome."

For once, they actually screwed the rich who are net lenders of money, instead of the rest who are net borrowers.
31  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] [YARR] Share Offer @ 2pm UTC August 1st. on: July 29, 2012, 02:41:55 AM

In 3 days there will be 1,000 new backing for YARR and I will sell up to 1500 new shares around 1.40-1.50. This has been announced for about a week now. I really don't know why people like you and Nimda keep spreading FUD about 1.90, volume at that level is what, 100, compared to maybe 3,000 under 1.40.

Actually - you said people were buying it for 1.9. How is that FUD?
32  Economy / Securities / Re: YARR Business for Sale on: July 29, 2012, 02:36:32 AM

Net worth:
Assets:
3700 Bitcoins (At least 2000 of which are on deposit with Pirate to pay dividends and 2000 of which are reserved to pay default).
Goodwill: Some unknown positive number (emphasis mine)

Oh wait, that gives you negative 300 bitcoins.....so you either don't have the coin to cover default or you haven't acknowledged the value of your insurance contract.

I bolded the relevant part. Please don't make the same mistake as people like clipse, nimda and others by assuming you know how YARR is structured. YARR is 100% backed, in fact, it's overbacked. YARR == CPA. We just created the new asset to allow people to buy bonds directly on the GLBSE.

Sorry - your company is worth less than 2000 BTC.

Please, don't apologize! It's all right --- just don't buy us. It will be okay for us. YARR makes 250 bitcoins a month as it stands, our time to cover is just seven weeks, which means by that time CPA will be making 25% a month with better risk than mining. If you don't think that is worth a small premium really, don't apologize, just don't buy.

Don't worry, there was no danger of me making an offer anywhere near what you think is fair. But I'd love to see your math on how you make 250 BTC a month holding 2000 bonds without continuously issuing new bonds. Because anyone can issue new bonds and claim that they are insured by personal guarantee. Why buy your company, why not just compete with an asset called PLANK?
33  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Look at a pirate, eye to eye if you dare. on: July 29, 2012, 12:10:25 AM
To prove that the person showing up in Vegas claiming to be pirate (if any) is pirateat40 indeed (with high probability), he could in the presence of many of the trusted forum members catching up with him, perform a live payout to its BS&T lenders. Because 00:00 am on Monday the 30th is due day for his regular dividends for BS&T this one could come as some bonus payout in order to prove pirate's credibility. It wouldn't have to be a large sum also, maybe 1 Satoshi to everyone. It would require a large amount of trust though, for pirate to hand over access to all his funds to some double standing in for him in Vegas.

Why would he ask someone else to go to Vegas for him?
Maybe to cloak his real identity and to stage this proof of trust, that many would fall for and give him the credibility, while he gives none to the community. He could also prepare his impending exit, while the world believes, that he still attends the Vegas convention every day.

Great idea.
34  Economy / Securities / Re: YARR Business for Sale on: July 28, 2012, 07:07:02 PM
That makes zero sense, you sell companies for the net worth. Your net worth is you assets minus your liabilities. Your assets are all of your deposits with pirate, plus your other bitcoins held by yarr, plus goodwill. Your liabilities are the sum of the face value of the shares of YARR.

Net worth:
Assets:
3700 Bitcoins (At least 2000 of which are on deposit with Pirate to pay dividends and 2000 of which are reserved to pay default).
Goodwill: Some unknown positive number

Oh wait, that gives you negative 300 bitcoins.....so you either don't have the coin to cover default or you haven't acknowledged the value of your insurance contract.

Liabilities:

2000 Shares to be paid at 1 BTC on demand or failure of pirate, 1.3 BTC to close out yourself.

Sorry - your company is worth less than 2000 BTC.
35  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Putting your money where Pirate's mouth is. on: July 17, 2012, 01:42:11 AM
I wonder if this caught pirate in USD or coin? This run today is exactly the short term volatility pirate was talking about. Hopefully since he just paid interest he hadn't sold coin already....
36  Economy / Speculation / Re: Rally!!!!! on: July 17, 2012, 01:37:03 AM
WHAT IS GOING ON

Who cares, we all made a bunch of money today!
37  Economy / Speculation / Ladies and Gentleman, There goes $9 on: July 17, 2012, 01:33:00 AM
Next stop $10, and then I predict at least 3 months of stability at $10.

$10 makes e-commerce easy. Everyone can do that math in their head.
38  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC will hit $8+ within one month of this thread. on: July 16, 2012, 03:40:30 PM
I wonder how often these large flash moves correlate with a hack of a major account on Gox? Expect announcement of (insert "bank" "trust" or recent glbse IPO here) lost all your money in 3...2...1....
39  Economy / Economics / Re: Another Segregated Funds Scandle on: July 15, 2012, 10:21:57 PM
But what happens when the corn farmer buys the sell side of a contract, then there is a huge drought and his crop fails.  Not only does he have no crop, he has buy the other side of his contract after the market price has skyrocketed.  He is now royally fucked.
That sounds like great business opportunity. You should get raise some capital and offer to protect farmers against this very thing. You can charge them a small amount of money periodically based on the risk of drought in their area and pay them a lump sum if they lose an entire crop. As long as you diversify your own risk by making it unlikely that every farmer you protect will get hit with a drought all at the same time it should work.

Too bad nobody is doing this yet.

If you were offering this type of insurance on corn in the US you would be bankrupted this year.

Actually not, crop insurance is all insured / reinsured by the federal government.
40  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Dank Bank Deposits - low risk, high interest - 2.5%-3.2% weekly on: July 13, 2012, 05:03:19 PM
Doesn't biweekly mean twice a week and bimonthly mean twice a month?

Twice a week would be semi-weekly

Twice a month would be semi-monthly

Biweekly is every other week.
