That's the first time I've ever seen heatpipes blow out. I work as a computer tech and see lots of nasty problems, but I've never seen anything like this.

Normal heatpipes can't really expand the way a vapor-chamber can, they usually just crack at either end when pressure gets to high and whatever medium was inside them leaks out.

so the medium leaks out on your motherboard, nasty  Roll Eyes
22  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Going to setup a mining rig. Need suggestions on: May 06, 2013, 01:54:19 PM
you forgot riser cable , at least 1 powered for 4 cards.

you won't cool 4 cards in a case.

23  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Buying a mining rig for scrypt ~1500usd - worth it? see specs on: May 06, 2013, 01:52:46 PM
you do not talk about the powersupply in your quote.  Wink

IT's important and you need at least a 1000W high quality to be safe. 3 * 250W + 100W + margin
24  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I want to build a 5 GPU rig, but don't know how. on: May 05, 2013, 01:28:49 PM
I would recommend the MSI Z77a-G45: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130645

It is pretty cheap and you can get 6 gpus on there, which will give you an extra slot to expand.

As far as how to set it up (for 6 gpus, if you are only going to be doing 5 you should still be able to understand how) you will need 3 x1 to x16 powered adapter cables and 2 x16 to x16 riser cables.  Refer to this image (credit to ssateneth) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9768004/z77ag45.jpg

If you only do 5 gpus, you wont need to pay attention to the presence short.  If you decide to go for it, look at these pics: http://blog.zorinaq.com/images/pcie-short-schematic.png and http://blog.zorinaq.com/images/pcie-short-photo.jpg

You simply plug the adapters and riser in the slots and then put your cards in.  Then you should be good to go.

Some questions:

1. I think I finally understand how these >4 GPU systems work. I didn't know what a riser cable was, but basically it allows you to run a GPU off a x1 port? Correct me if I'm wrong. It needs to be powered though because the x1 port doesnt provide as much power as the x16. I'll also probably end up buying x16 to x16 powered risers. some of the power for the card comes from the pcie slot and 3 is the max the motherboard can give so you need an external source of power ie the molex plug
2. What does it mean when you have a powered riser with Molex? What's Molex? the molex plud is the 4 pins D shaped CD-ROM and PATA harddisk power plug
3. Is the 7950 better than the 7970? I've heard here that it is. Not completely sure though, and it doesnt make since due to it being lower in the series. Won't go 7990 because of the price gap. The 7970 does better than the 7950 in hashpower, but can I overclock 5 (or even 6) 7950s to 7970 speed? to mine 7950 is almost as good as 7970 and cheaper
4. Does the PCIe 3.0 increase hashpower at all over the PCIe 2.0 slots?no advantage

you just built 3 machines like that

cost effective Huh

NO  Grin

CPU mining is out on BTC and not profitable IMO in LTC.

run open case, no side on it, and yes undervolt if unlocked

32  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: running two instances of miner software on gpu on: May 01, 2013, 01:00:29 PM
one miner is GPU and the other CPU that's why , but cpu mining is not cost effective if you pay for electricity

I don't know where you live but those prices are expensive for old technologies, look for a 7790 if you want inexpensive cards.  Grin
35  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mining LTC on: May 01, 2013, 12:54:04 PM
yes less, since your graphic card can only do so much work, it will split the work between your 2 coins.

It's not like nmc that are free from your pool.  Grin
36  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Which Motherboard? on: April 30, 2013, 08:51:11 PM
On the pcie slots side YES, on the chance of making 7 cards work it's something else.

What I read is that 3 or 4 cards is easy more is difficult

of course you realise that the number of BTC TODAY has nothing to do with how much you will receive when you do get the BFL  Grin

If you order now then in september when you receive your machine you will produce much less BTC  Cry
38  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Best 7950 card right now?? on: April 27, 2013, 09:55:20 PM
I have an 6970 HIS stock cooler on it and it's warmer and louder then my 2 Gigabyte 3 fans 6970 even if the HIS is unlocked and undervolted.  Smiley

go with the 3 fans Gigabyte and open case or lots of fans over a stock cooler even if undervoled.  Grin

but that's not with 7950  Roll Eyes

get an other riser, powered if possible and an other small power supply and look how to join it to your existing 24 powerplug so that it will turn on and off like your regular powersuppply
