21  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Importing Piper paper wallet - problem on: December 10, 2013, 07:29:59 PM
I think the Piper allows you to encrypt the private key with BIP0038, right?

Perhaps you generated an encrypted private key?  If so, I don't think that Litecoin-Qt allows direct import of BIP0038 encrypted keys.  You'll probably have to decrypt the key first?

I think you might have just figured out the problem.  I'm pretty sure I did check the option to encrypt it with BIP0038.  How do I decrypt it so I can import to Litecoin-QT?

Thanks for the reply.  Nope, I'm not using quotations.  I'm typing it just like you did.  Is there another step I have to do before just typing in the private key?  Like, do I have to type in the public key first somewhere in Litecoin-QT?  Basically the Piper printer prints out a paper slip that has the public and private key on it.  I typed the private key in letter by letter multiple times and keep getting the same error code.  There are definitely coins at the address because I can see them in the litecoin block explorer.

Having some trouble here.  I printed out a Litecoin paper wallet with the Piper printer, I encrypted the wallet.  I sent some test Litecoins to the public key, and they show up on the blockchain.  So, I wanted to test importing the paper wallet into Litecoin QT.

I opened up the debug window, typed in: walletpassphrase 'my password' '300'

I get the error message: Error: running with an unencrypted wallet, but walletpassphrase was called. (code -15)

I then typed in the debug window: importprivkey 'my private key'

I get the error message: Invalid private key (code -5)

What am I doing wrong?  Am I missing a step or something?  I know I am typing in my password and the private key correctly.  I have tried it multiple times, resulting in the same error codes.  Thanks in advance!

Bah, never mind.  I just found a thread that explains that adding or changing an avatar is currently disabled for everyone apparently by the forum moderator.

Any plans on making avatars useable in the future?
26  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Won't let me use an avatar... on: December 06, 2013, 05:31:11 AM
I still don't understand.  It says "newbies" cannot upload their own avatar.  But I've been a member here for almost a year and I'm not a newbie anymore...
27  Other / Beginners & Help / Won't let me use an avatar... on: December 06, 2013, 05:13:50 AM
I've been a member here for awhile but just now decided to add an avatar.  For some reason when I try to add an avatar and click "change profile" nothing happens.  I've tried uploading the avatar and hosting it and neither works.  The avatar is the correct size and is not a large file.  What's the problem?

A safe way for a non-techie person to create a paper wallet is the Piper paper wallet printer.  It's completely offline and will print Bitcoin and Litecoin paper wallets, and it will also let you plug in a USB and copy the keys to that as well.  Their site is piper.pw.

The Piper paper wallet printer might be a good option for someone who is non-techie.  It's a completely offline printer that will print paper Bitcoin and Litecoin wallets.  It will even let you plug in a usb and backup the keys to that as well.  The website is piper.pw.

Amazing.
31  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The safety of using USB sticks to transfer data from an offline machine on: December 05, 2013, 06:40:37 PM
In what way does a write-protected USB stick prevent malware from spreading between the online and offline machines?

The way I understand it is that you turn off the write protection when you put the USB in the offline computer (assuming you have an offline computer that has never touched the internet), so you can copy the signed transaction (using offline Electrum or Armory).  Then you turn on the write protection when you put the USB in the online computer to complete the transaction, so no data can be written on the USB drive while it's in the online computer, it can only read data.  This could protect against something malicious being written on your USB stick while it's in the online machine.
32  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / The safety of using USB sticks to transfer data from an offline machine on: December 05, 2013, 01:18:41 PM
Being a little bit paranoid, I've been wondering lately if there is any real risk when transferring files via USB stick from an online machine, to a machine that will always be offline, and the other way around.  For instance, if I'm using the offline Electrum wallet, and I want to make an offline transaction.  At some point the USB stick is going from my offline computer to my online one.  And then at another point that same USB is likely going to be put in the offline machine again.  Is there any way for some kind of virus/malware/spyware to get on that USB stick and get transferred to the offline machine, and then in turn get transferred back to the online machine?  Basically, my worry is that even though my netbook will always stay offline, is there any way for any data from it to be leaked via a USB stick, once that stick is put in an online computer?  Maybe I'm being a little too paranoid, but I'm not that much of a techie, and was hoping to hear from those that are on this issue.
33  Bitcoin / Electrum / How to use offline Electrum? on: December 05, 2013, 04:14:34 AM
I recently just downloaded the newest version of Electrum onto my online computer.  When I start the program up it asks me to write down a random seed of words.  Is there any way to do this on an offline computer so I never have to generate the seed on an online computer?  I have a netbook that has never been online, so would I just need to copy the electrum.exe file to the offline netbook and install it there, or is there more to it?  Thanks in advance.
34  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: RAM-Reduction & Backup Center Testing (version 0.89.99.16) on: November 29, 2013, 06:19:53 PM
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is this version out of the testing phase now?

Asking this because I see a beta version 0.90 available for download on the Armory website, and don't recall seeing it there a couple days ago.
35  Bitcoin / Armory / Non-technical Armory user. Can't access my Bitcoins. on: September 11, 2013, 09:09:25 PM
I've been using Armory for awhile, since back when you didn't need a ton of RAM to run the program.  I haven't been able to run Armory for months and I want to be able to access my Bitcoins.  I've been waiting, hoping that there will be a solution, but I would like to get my BTC to somewhere that I can access them.  Is there any way I can get them out of Armory and into another wallet without being able to run Armory?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
36  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory online mode help and other problems on: August 09, 2013, 02:59:36 PM
I can't seem to find any settings in the Armory client where I can specify where Bitcoin-Qt is installed.  The closest thing to settings I can find is File > Preferences, but there is nothing there that lets me specify a folder..
37  Bitcoin / Armory / Armory online mode help and other problems on: August 08, 2013, 06:58:43 PM
I've been having a lot of problems with Armory and it's been extremely frustrating not being able to access my btc for around 3 months.  Let me sum up what had happened so far.

Ok, I was originally using Armory on a system with 3gb of RAM, and since about 3 months ago I haven't been able to use Armory on that system.  It won't load.  I read on the Armory website that you need 6gb of RAM now.

So, I got a system with the required 6GB of RAM, and downloaded the latest version of Armory.  For some reason, when I click the icon to run the program it doesn't load.  It shows the program running in the task manager, but it never opens.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and nothing changes.

So... Now to my current problem.

I tried downloading an older version (0.87) and to my delight Armory opens.  The problem now is, that it will not go to online mode.  I have Bitcoin QT downloaded and up to date and Armory just stays in offline mode.  This might be a stupid question, but how do I get Armory to go into online mode?

Thanks!

How can I fix this?  Much thanks.

39  Other / Beginners & Help / Armory Help on: July 25, 2013, 11:33:51 PM
Hi,

I am having trouble getting Armory to work, therefore I am not able to access my bitcoins.  I had Armory on one of my computers that was running a 32bit operating system with 3gb of ram.  I heard about the problem that Armory is not loading unless you have a 64bit operating system and 6gb of ram.  So I am trying to download Armory on another computer of mine that meets those specs, but when I click on the link to download Armory from their website it says:

"Your client does not have permission to get URL /files/armory_0.88.1-beta_win64.msi from this server. (Client IP address: xxxxxxxxxx)

You are attempting to perform an activity that you have insufficient permissions for. If you feel this is in error, please contact the project administrator. That’s all we know."

Does anyone know what is really going on with Armory?  When are they going to get these issues fixed?  I just feel really uncomfortable not having access to my bitcoins.
40  Other / Beginners & Help / Armory Offline Wallet - Am I doing something wrong? on: April 30, 2013, 01:05:46 PM
I just created an offline Armory wallet on a separate computer, and I am using a "watching only" copy on my other computer connected to the internet.  To test it out I sent a small amount of BTC to one of the addresses in my wallet.

It shows the transaction in the "watching only" wallet, but after almost an hour it still shows as an Unconfirmed Transaction on blockchain and I cannot spend the BTC yet from my Armory wallet.  Is it normal to take this long or am I doing something wrong?
