21  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Wait for ASIC?... or build new GPU/FPGA rigs? on: March 11, 2013, 08:13:12 PM
Even if your GPUs were free, the time and effort involved getting up to speed on it would not be worth it. GPU mining will absolutely be unprofitable very soon, and it takes a while to get it running smoothly.
22  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New here and with a question... on: March 11, 2013, 08:10:57 PM
CPU mining has been a losing proposition for a long time now. Please do some reading.
Even GPU mining will not be profitable very much longer.

Then start reading.

Don't worry about making them. Buy them from someone who has them - or sell stuff for Bitcoin - or provide services for Bitcoin.

If you're unsatisfied with this, it's time to spend some time reading the wiki about mining, and reading the forum to catch up on the last 2 years of development. But in the end you'll come to this conclusion.

The best advice anyone can give you is to stop worrying about mining.

There are lots of ways to get involved with Bitcoin, and plenty of opportunities to make money. Just forget about mining.

(They -really- need to take mining out of the weusecoins video.)
26  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should I even bother? on: March 05, 2013, 05:20:25 AM
If you buy now you're probably still early compared to the rest of humanity :-)
Yerp.

GPU mining has a large learning curve and requires a decent amount of time/attention even after you know what you're doing. I currently have 4 cards sitting idle after almost 2 years of nonstop operation. It was a relief to turn them off.

27  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some Mining Rigs/ASIC recommended site on: March 05, 2013, 05:11:30 AM
You should just buy BTC. Don't worry about mining, unless you already have the hardware.

Even if BFL started shipping tomorrow, you'd likely never break even on their 150$ unit by the time you got it, unless BTC price continues to climb at the current rate...in which case you'd definitely be better off just buying BTC directly.

The best way to become involved with bitcoin is develop goods/services and participate in trade.

Something is wrong. Check the console window and see what it says.
I'd try CGminer instead.
29  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is the value of Bitcoin rising too fast for anyone to actually spend it? on: March 04, 2013, 10:18:26 PM
Absolutely not. I make every purchase I can in bitcoin...if I want to "save" my current amount, I buy more first.

It's nice to have an incentive to save, though. Back when I was a kid, banks used to pay this thing called "interest" on money you saved. Crazy, right?
30  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: February 18, 2013, 09:52:20 PM
It's been annoying. I don't want to spam other threads, yet I need the posts to post relevant stuff later.
So request to be whitelisted. This is why the restriction is here in the first place - the whitelist request thread is stickied at the top here. But you haven't spent enough time to see it. Give it a whirl....see you on the other side!
31  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How will ASICs affect mining? on: February 18, 2013, 09:26:54 PM
I'm hardly living in a fantasy world. If I was I wouldn't be asking this question. However, I have friends who think by pre ordering an ASIC rig, they'll be making thousands. I'm just hoping to have some fun with bitcoin. If I make some profit along the way, that's cool too.
This is exactly why these companies make so much more money selling ASICs rigs instead of mining with them. Impulse buyers. (Your friends, not you.)
I wouldn't participate in any of this "pre-order" nonsense...at this stage even if you eventually get what you paid for, the odds are against you breaking even. (In comparison with using the same money to buy BTC directly, anyway.)
32  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [SOLVED] Bitinstant.com - you'll get them eventually. on: February 18, 2013, 09:21:21 PM
I was going to bring up BitMe.com (Cash deposits through Chase) but their website appears down? I didn't see any posts about them going under. Hopefully it's only a temporary outage and no one lost funds... Undecided
33  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: February 18, 2013, 09:18:17 PM
I think this rule is really stupid. Wouldn't it be enough to impose some kind of account age restriction? Anyone can spam in the newbie section to get the post count, even if they troll / post spam on the real board.
It's been effective.

I think it would also be great if people couldn't post to the lending section without 6 months of account activity.
34  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [SOLVED] Bitinstant.com - you'll get them eventually. on: February 18, 2013, 09:12:43 PM
Nothing wrong with your list, Danny.

None of them fill all of the same needs as BitInstant, however.

To deposit cash to Mtgox, you need to use Bitinstant. Other methods will not be "instant." Also, they may lock your account without notice and require a copy of sensitive ID information to get your money out.

BitFloor is great, however, their cash deposit option is currently only available through BoA. That's definitely not as widely accessible as MG locations.

Coinbase is currently being overloaded with demand. And while reputable, they don't have cash deposits or instant withdrawals.

localbitcoins, again, great service for some needs, not for others. Setting up deals takes time and effort, and the quality of your transactions depends on the people you meet. In some areas there is no one else using the site.

I currently don't see direct competition for BitInstant. Even so, they are doing a commendable job of handling problems.
35  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [SOLVED] Bitinstant.com - you'll get them eventually. on: February 18, 2013, 09:00:46 PM
well ill tell you if this shit doesn't end tonight and my deposit isn't in my account by tonight i'm going viral with this and will change companies.

there are plenty of other companies that are reputable and you get your BTC instantly. This is my second and possibly my last transaction with Bit(notso)instant.com

Plenty of other companies? Care to name them?
36  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can I chargeback Asic order using PayPal ! on: February 18, 2013, 08:57:15 PM
You should call your CC company. I've read that some apply different chargeback policies.

All I really need is 2-4 weeks! If they deliver on their first batch then no fear there. ( about 2 months total from my original order).

And that is precisely why I did not order 2nd patch avalon. I wonder why anybody would pay in BTC. Vs PayPal?
They paid in BTC because it was the only option, and Avalon is the only company that's shipped ASICs to customers.

I wouldn't order from them, either, though. People who abuse their customers just because they can will not get my business.

Seems legit.  Cool

Hello! I'm a wonderful person. Really.
39  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: February 18, 2013, 08:45:26 PM
I think it should be raised to several hundred.
