I've been using mostly Seasonic for a long time - did get a couple of EVGA 1300 G2 units when I had the S5 farm, as they were on sale at the time and lots of "they're good" recommendations - they worked fine but haven't had them long enough or pushed them long enough to have a solid opinion yet.

A couple of my A2 units got X1250 transplants - the EVGA flat out didn't fit right, the Seasonics did fit fairly well, partly they're a bit shorter and partly the modular connections were better placed to clear the fan/control board.

I wouldn't hesitate to trust Rosewill for cases and keyboards and the like (not mice - I HATE mice, nothing but Logitech Trackmen around here!) but their lack of transparency in who makes the PS makes me inclined to not trust them there.

Oh for those that say "you'll never repurpose those ATX power supplies, just go server" - of my current 4x X1250 and pair of EVGA 1300s, ALL of the Seasonics are currently in machines (2 A2s, 2 computers) and one of the EVGA's is my current "bench setup" power supply (the other one is currently a spare but it might get hooked to a Batch 2 S9 when the price gets reasonable).

Not knocking the server supplies - just prefer the flexability of "ack, dead PS, grab whatever I've got as a spare 'till I can get a real replacement!" for almost anything in house.

I can see the S5 still being a good option in some cases for a FREE ELECTRIC miner, they've come down enough that you can match the hashrate of a S7 with enough S5s at less cost with a LITTLE digging - abet the power usage and heat are higher, the flexability of being able to use much smaller PS and the lower power draw per unit might be a major plus if they have to share circuits with something else.
I wouldn't bother with anything older though.

The EVGA SuperNova G2s is one of their best lines because they are just relabeled SuperFlower PSUs which are very prestigious PSUs in the computer world. This also includes the T2 and P2 from EVGA which are also just rebranded SuperFlower Leadex
Does EVGA really just rebrand half of their psus? That might be why all of the 400 watt ones that I buy from them all break... :/ Don't tell me their other stuff are rebrands too!
Thermaltake, Corsair and Cooler Master also provide some pretty good power supplies, they are just around the quality of EVGA. I used them in some of my pcs, and they've been running fine. Reliability isn't too big of an issue as long as you look at reviews of products beforehand. Don't buy from no-name brands, they will ruin your miners. I've had a problem with a cheap psu I got from ebay, and it ruined the power connector on my S3. Just melted. I could only use 1 power cord on it for the rest of the time I used it. Not a big problem, as I never overclock, but still, a bit depressing.

Unfortunetly yes they do rebrand A LOT. Typically whenever they release a new "line" of PSUs that typically means the batch is coming from a different factory. BUT the G2/P2/T2 are all SuperFlower Leadex rebrands, which are AMAZING PSUs.

You also want to be very careful with how much power you are pulling from the wall. Make sure your outlets can handle it without constantly tripping your breaker.

Im just getting back into mining and i picked up two cheap S4s (i get free electricity) and from the pools that i looked at to go into, 3% does seem really high to me.

It is not hard to get a better rate than 3%.

https://kano.is/ is 0.9%
https://bitminter.com/ is 1%
https://slushpool.com/ is 2%

Thats exactly what i mean, there was no issue finding a good pool under 3%, even 1% or lower. (currently @ kano ck)

I love checking my workers and seeing the last block on pool match the last block found number. Perfect timing!

33  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Antminer S9 on: June 09, 2016, 01:46:27 PM

Ok, let's try again. This machine costs 3.5 BTC. It returns 2.5 BTC in a year. You lose 1 BTC.

I can just buy 3.5 BTC and then not buy the miner. In a year I still have 3.5 BTC. No matter what the cost of BTC is I have more $$ than if I bought the miner.

Yes, BTC price increase will affect your fiat ROI. But look above. If you can't ROI in BTC you would have done better to hold the coin. If BTC goes up, you have more fiat if you hold the coin. If BTC goes down you lose less money if you hold the coin. Mining at a BTC loss is willingly increasing the risk to your fiat while simultaneously diminishing the returns of your fiat. You make less for higher risk.

Would you buy 4 gold bars to trade for digging equipment designed to dig up 3 gold bars and then hope for the price of gold to go up? No you wouldn't, you would just hold the 4 gold bars. Why should BTC be any different? Why would you pay more BTC than a machine returns?

This is why you run ROI in BTC. If you can't recoup BTC, hold the coin. If you can recoup coin plus more, decide if the 'plus more' is worth the risk (will the machine and variables hold up).

Personally, this just seems like way too long of a ROI for bitcoin mining gear. I get free electricity and I look at gear that i can pay off within 60-90 days.
34  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining after Halving 2016 on: June 09, 2016, 02:13:00 AM
I think price will not rise much more and difficulty will drop quite a bit. So we are pretty much on the opposite side of the fence.  But I am holding coins and hoping I am wrong and you are correct.

I agree with this. I feel that mines that are just making profit right now or mines using older equipment will fall because it will be the efficiency era. Or free electric, like I get and ill be looking for older tech cheap and run it. But in hoping for the other, all the coin i mine from this point on will stay that way.

Hello everyone! I just got my TWO S4s online and running! I chose to go with Kano CKPool! 4TH Incoming!

Welcome to the pool, drazah...we do tend to have a good time here. IMHO you'll get better info, better returns in the long run, and transparent & honest management. It works.  Cool

Well thats the plan! Im starting with my S4s, once they pay themselves off I will then invest into more and plan to bring that power here!

Many of us here started the same way...and there are, of course, some major, capitalized players as well. I like it for that. I started (read as "got back into" as I had been "away" for a couple of years) with a Radeon GPU in early 2015; got an S2 last fall; then started with S3s (now have six); and now have all those plus 3 S7s. All have been paid for with generated BTC (except for the S2...a GPU just won't cut it these days to make that much). The "plan" continues.

Wow sweet! Thats actually great motivation to hear that! I got my S4s, with my free electricity and the deal i got on them i should have them paid off in about 2 months (current market). So even if i can get 1 decent month to cover some of cost then id be happy. Plus i figured i wait until after the "halvening" because people will be selling off their stock and ill be able to grab a lot of gear for CHEAP.

38  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Back into Bitcoin! Access to FREE electric. How should i continue!? on: June 08, 2016, 12:52:48 PM
personally if i had free electricity i would mine like crazy everything, roi does not matter much anymore, you can sell afterward your equipment easy, if remaining in the 3 months time-frame

electricity matter the most if you want to scale big your farm

This is what i was thinking initially. Although i don't have endless money or a large bankroll to start. I took what i was comfortable spending and found what was best for that while ignoring the electricity matter.
39  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Swallowing a whale which becomes a frog when swallowed on: June 07, 2016, 03:10:49 PM
ASIC has ruined everything and decentralized philosophy of bitcoin, struggles to survive. ASIC mining hardware manufacturers are crawling to top while (at least some of them) showing  fake sympathies about decentralization.
Recently I have been involved in a negotiation with Bitmain for having access to their bare hashing board samples for an immersed liquid cooling project of mine, witnessing how their official policy of giving their products out to public is fake. Making a technology  public domain is not just about selling off the shelf products with enough delay to take all of the advantages of being the first. People have rights to be more involved in details and have access to the chips, the pcbs, etc ....
Bitmain is the worst player because of cheating and being a hypocrite but no other ASIC mining hardware producer is honorable. They are all the same fools who do not understand the paradoxical nature of their strategy (swallowing a whale which becomes a frog when swallowed).
The main, generic problem with this dirty hardware industry is its  'money intensive'  characteristic. If it was about Google or Microsoft trying to monopolize software, no problem at all and an opportunity for devs to have fun. But it is, this hardware shit, all about the money.
I am thinking of a DAO like institution to raise millions of dollars with a pure nonprofit philosophy to back community oriented hardware development projects. Is it feasible? Have you any alternative plan?
By the way: I'm looking for bare hashing boards (at least 10 pieces) for my immerse liquid cooling project. I prefer the boards to be of the most recent technologies, any help available? Any recommendations?

Just for transparency clarification. What exactly do you mean by "swallowing a whale which becomes a frog when swallowed"?

What is the "official policy" of giving their products out to the public?

You see Bitmain as a monopoly? Within a very specific niche of hardware that was built for one thing? Im so lost...

Call me dumb, but after reading this I'm still not sure exactly what you're trying to get across. Isn't bitcoin in essence "money intensive"? A DAO like institution could raise millions of dollars with a purely nonprofit philosophy to back the community oriented hardware development, Feasible? Sure. OR a company like Bitmain comes around, Does it all themselves and releases a product to those willing to purchase.
40  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Back into Bitcoin! Access to FREE electric. How should i continue!? on: June 06, 2016, 02:23:06 PM
The first presumption is that the new RX 480 will actually be availaibly in quantity - track record of the GTX 1080 is making that look kinda iffy right now.

The second presumption is that folks will be able to get RX 480 at close to it's list price - I suspect that will not happen for a month or two, "new card gouge on price" is an old tradition even when the availability is pretty good.

On the other hand, unless you can get a current card pretty cheap, it MIGHT make some sense to "wait and see" what actually happens on availability, pricing, and how well the RX 480 can mine in fact as opposed to the current "speculation only" situation.

S9 though is DEFINITELY a "wait for price to come down and competiton to show up" situation IMO - the current price is a ripoff, though I'm sure Bitmain intends to sell as many units at the current crazy-high pricing as they can while they can to help pay for the development costs on the new chip.

I'm NOT saying I BLAME them for the pricing, as there's good business logic behind "charge as much as the customers will bear while we can", just that I'm not willing to pay that large of an early adopter premium myself on a miner that will probably be profitable for years.

*Hopefully* I was planning on buying 2 RX480s for my computer build next month, won't be using for mining but they will free up my other R9 290X and ill probably just use them for mining ETH if i get that going. Other than that though I dont plan on spending anymore money out of pocket until I get what I have now up and running for atleast a month.
