21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BURST] Burstcoin | Proof of Capacity | Smart Contracts | Green Mining on: April 21, 2019, 01:03:45 AM
Hello, I have been out for a while. I have been thinking a lot about Burst and the Proof of Capacity Consortium and I couldnt help feeling that we were scammed.

Was the Dymaxion really possible or were we avoiding asking the right questions because we wanted the hype?
22  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Proof of Capacity as a replacement for Proof of Work. on: December 18, 2018, 03:00:54 AM
Daniel, nixops, Jones did a nice presentation about Proof of Capacity in this video. It starts in the 48 minute mark.

https://youtu.be/OoxIslpOiOg

Post your question if you have one. I will ask nixops to reply to all of them in the thread. Ty.
23  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: BURST SPECULATION, the next big thing, mining with your HARD DRIVES! on: December 12, 2018, 05:02:30 AM
Burst - Aspera Wallet was announced on the 1st of December. I was a little skeptical at first but this must tell all Burst holders that the PoCC is devoted to take the project to the top.

The market also took it well as the price is holding on to some of its gains since the announcement of Aspera's announcement.

24  Economy / Economics / Re: A Public Market is Turning 'Cashless' in the Philippines on: December 12, 2018, 04:47:40 AM
'The new Marulas Public Market in Valenzuela City is the first-of-its-kind ‘DigiPalengke’ initiative in Northern Metro Manila where an entire marketplace is equipped to accept mobile cashless payments.'

https://pia.gov.ph/news/articles/1015376

--

This is quite interesting since even a public market where most of the time common folk buy their everyday needs is accepting digital payments. While this is not entirely related to cryptocurrency, it's as if the people are slowly seeing the convenience and security cashless payments offer to their everyday lives. For years, scan-to-pay stores are just confined within the walls of malls and luxurious places but it seems that we're slowly bringing it to the masses and eventually, it will be the norm to pay only with our smartphones and pre-loaded accounts--and in the future, possibly even cryptocurrencies.

Think about which corporation or bank in that country controls mobile payments and why did the government enable it?

BTC was always there but why is no one using it in that public market?
25  Economy / Exchanges / Re: HitBTC 2FA hoax on: December 06, 2018, 04:57:15 AM
Dutch Guy, its also your responsibility to make back ups of the 2FA's QR code and the long alphanumeric string so you wont encounter this problem. You cant blame HitBTC customer support for trying to protect your account from a possible social engineering attack. Undecided
26  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Do you own a shitcoin? lol Find out. on: December 06, 2018, 04:45:01 AM
Mike! Share them in this thread whenever you have a new blog or tweet. Im not really into social media except for my facebook days which I already deactivated because it was useless lol.

I guess you missed the latest news about GPU manufacturers that are designing specialized Graphic cards that are targeted at Bitcoin/Crypto currency mining.  Roll Eyes

Most people only have a problem with this, because China was smart enough to dominate the ASIC manufacturing scene <racist much?>

If the people in Silicon Valley wanted to be smart, they could have jumped onto the Bitcoin bandwagon a long time ago, but they were more worried about the political implications, than the technological advancement and innovation that Bitcoin brought to the world.  Tongue

That doesnt solve the energy inefficiency problem of Proof of Work. The GPU manufacturers are adding more problems to inefficient energy usage and waste instead of searching for answers.

Having that said, this blog by nixops, who's an early BTC adopter, is a good piece. He has also talked about the insecurities of PoW.

Energy Efficiency and Security

Bitcoin

  • It introduces a heavy reliance on the power system, and for operating any Proof-of-Work coins you will need very large amounts of power. Heavy power usage is usually a red flag to anyone closely monitoring its people. Even in the United States, this happens often with law enforcement, usually in the silly war on indoor marijuana grow homes.

Dangers of Proof of Work

  • The use of an ASIC or a GPU is a high risk in some of the most underserved areas of the world. You may laugh but you should really consider nations without good power infrastructure or a dictatorship.

  • Electricity isn’t free and is often the first thing that is usually monitored in its’ usage by any good intelligence agency for reconnaissance. This is often how a regime may find counter groups or in some cases mining farms and individual miners in which to raid.

  • In these environments the ones in power are also very much so looking to stop those attempting to challenge that authority.

Proof of Capacity

  • Burstcoin uses Proof-of-Capacity as a consensus, thus allowing for hard drive space to be used mining. This allows anyone to mine without using significant amounts of electricity and opens up the avenues of using the communication channels provided by the burst wallet.

  • By remaining trustless the network can adapt accordingly with the needs of the people. This allows for flexibility and scaling necessary for economic systems. By using a consensus in which anyone can mine with a hard drive.

  • This lowers the bar to entry and it also does not compromise the user for ordering a drive. I mention that a nod to an incident a few years ago. As intelligence agencies go they typically choke down to what the people are ordering or doing, in this way you can still mine without compromising that you are intending to mine.

  • With this hard drives also do not need to be replaced each time a new model comes out to be competitive in the mining process. Which allows for miners and nodes to continue to operate well into the future with little infrastructure. Thus strengthening the network and providing further nodes to keep the ledger decentralized. This provides the most benefit to the individual as they too can have a voice in what is needed or not in the evolution of their use of cryptocurrency.

No more replies from Mikey. I think this project is now ditched by the developers. It was a good way to collect email leads if some of the users were giving their email addresses lol.
29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining BTC is centralized. on: December 03, 2018, 04:28:52 AM
greener mining alternatives.

at a recent hashrate of 36exa, thats:
36,000,000 terrahash
36,000,000,000,000 megahash

if we stuck with PC (cpu) mining that would be
trillions of PC's needed. imagine a PC with a 500w Power supply each

but with asics thats only 1.28million ASICS using near-off 3 PC power supplies
so the equivelent of just ~4mill PC's worth of power

4mill vs trillions... which is greener?

i know some foolish people think signing blocks using PoS is greener. but they have no cost/risk in signing. it doesnt cost a penny to sign a block. meaning there is no cost for people to pool up 'stake' and syndicate themselves into controlling block creation which is a SECURITY RISK

by having a cost to mine prevents outsiders from attack and also makes bitcoin have a viable bottomline value because it actually costs funds to mine it. thus those mining it will not sell at a loss and wont sell it down to a penny

altcoins using PoS have no underlying cost of production and the price is pure speculation

We can agree in Proof of Stake as a bad idea. The greener alternative technology available to us is Proof of Capacity and Proof of Space and Time.

Having that said, electricity isnt the only physical property we have available to secure the digital with the physical. The world has a huge capacity of unused disk space that can be accured to secure a cryptocurrency.
30  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Mining BTC is centralized. on: November 24, 2018, 01:32:09 AM
Why is everyone avoiding this problem? Everyone should be concerned about this.

  • Companies are required to apply for a permit to make ASIC

  • The state can withdraw those permits

  • Less than 5 companies make ASIC

  • Those companies can work together to control all Proof of Work ASIC mining

Its our time to explore more decentralized and greener mining alternatives.

Bump.

Mikey, you promised us. Where's the updates lol? Smiley
32  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Blockstream's new blockexplorer on: November 12, 2018, 03:36:57 AM
Though this feature doesn't help me, I like that it has a bitcoin testnet feature.

The only advantage for me on using Blockstream's block explorer is that it has dark mode by default LOL; and it's also good that they have their own Tor URLs. Though I really don't know the advantages of using an Onion URL vs using the official "blockstream.info" URL on a Tor browser.

But dont forget, dark mode make your screen work more and it can affect its life span lol.

I like it, its very light on my browser because there are no analytics embedded on the page.

Bump.

We from the Burst community wouldnt want all of you to miss the investment of a life time. Its starting now. The big green candle is lighting up lol.
34  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin doesnt only consume too much electricity, it destroys the environment on: November 12, 2018, 03:17:22 AM
Is okay for BTC miners to add more power until it uses as much energy as 20 small countries? How long can PoW mining be sustainable? Can it last as long as 1000 or more years?

Having that said, wont it be good to explore other forms of mining thats cheaper and use lower amounts energy?
35  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin doesnt only consume too much electricity, it destroys the environment on: November 09, 2018, 04:16:14 AM
It will not stop. Is this a race of who kills our planet first?

no it is a race about who can make the most outrageous claims about bitcoin's energy usage and the business is good these days. they come up with these exaggerated numbers that they keep feeding people trying to undermine bitcoin. the fact is none of these websites like "theguardian" which you quoted give a shit about planet and environment otherwise they would have spoke more about the real polluting industries that are causing global warming and killing us all not the tiny energy consumption that is the most constructive and clean thing you can find.

Meanwhile its helping destroy our planet as it consumes more energy and increasingly adds to the pollution thats already there. We need an answer or an exploration of an answer to PoW's wasteful use of energy.

Having that said, I know the answer will become the future of mining.
36  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin doesnt only consume too much electricity, it destroys the environment on: November 08, 2018, 04:20:07 AM

Energy cost of mining Bitcoin more than copper or gold
37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin doesnt only consume too much electricity, it destroys the environment on: November 08, 2018, 04:13:12 AM
like always the source is not reliable and bitcoin isn't really consuming that much energy. it is just that these days we are seeing another wave of attacks against bitcoin with the same old topic about bitcoin's energy consumption whereas nothing has changed. and all these sites are only repeating the same thing by adding their own drama on top of it.

Its consuming increasing amount of energy every year. If it doesnt stop where will it be in 10 years? It will be consuming more energy of more nations and will be part of the cause in destroying the environment.

Its the right time to explore other low energy algorithms other than the power hungry PoW to mine coins.
38  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin doesnt only consume too much electricity, it destroys the environment on: November 06, 2018, 04:27:32 AM
The old hardware used and thrown will also be another envronmental problem because the metals and plastics are made of precious and limited resources from the Earth.

All developers should do their due diligence on the energy and hardware efficiency of Proof of Capacity and help to make it more secure from grinding attacks and time memory trade off attacks. Doing nothing and killing the Earth is the alternative lol.

Bitcoin is consuming more energy than Denmark, study

  • Mining virtual currencies with a real-world value, in other words, carries a hidden environmental cost that is rarely measured or taken into account.

  • "We now have an entirely new industry that is consuming more energy per year than many countries," said Max Krause, a researcher at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education and lead author of a study in the journal Nature Sustainability.

"In 2018, bitcoin is on track to consume more energy than Denmark," he told AFP.
Denmark consumed 31.4 billion kilowatt hours in electricity in 2015. As of July 1 of this year, Bitcoin mining used up approximately 30.1 billion kilowatt hours, according to the study.

  • For the study, Krause and Thabet Tolaymat, an environmental engineer based in Cincinnati, Ohio, calculated the average energy consumed to create one US dollar's worth of four top virtual currencies -- bitcoin, ethereum, litecoin and monero -- over the 30-month period up to June 2018.

That amount was 17, 7, 7 and 14 million joules, or megajoules (MJ), respectively.
A joule is a unit of energy equivalent to the work required to produce one watt of power for one second.

That is up to three times the energy needed to excavate gold, platinum or copper, they found. Of the metals examined, only aluminum -- at 122 MJ per dollar's worth -- was more energy intensive.

  • A complete calculation of the environmental cost of virtual currencies would take into account the banks of computers used to mine them.

"The computers are made with gold and other precious metals," said Krause.
"They are run aggressively, which means the hardware is destroyed much quicker than you or I would expect for regular use -- maybe a year instead of five or ten."

The Proof of Capacity Consortium has an announcement of an announcement lol.

  • By the end of this month we will inform you about a clandestine project of the PoCC (and friends). Is it big? You bet.

Naturally we won't give you more hints for now, other than this will show you - beyond any reasonable doubt - our commitment to this coin. Furthermore, it will prove that neither the Dymaxion, nor TAs, nor PoC3 are - as some lovely haters have expressed it - "pipe dreams", but that we can make every single one of these happen.

Maybe one more hint before end of November.

    Stay. Tuned.

Is the announcement going to answer this?

Nixops also was supposed to have a good announcement but it may have been postponed to be announced on this month. The future is bright!
