23  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Will ByteCoin confuse people about BitCoin on: April 04, 2013, 02:31:45 PM
Yes will confuse a lot of people, especially if they are not native english speakers. In general the more coins will appear, more confusion will be. Imagine, hundreds of new alt coins launched, maybe sponsored by some corporations or groups etc It's similar to domain names, first we had .com, now ICANN approved a lot of new TLDs for everyone, .ny, .bcn http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/application-results/strings-1200utc-13jun12-en, ... why not .bitcoin
The difference, .com domain name had time to establish on the market, but the bitcoin... not sure, the chinese could create their own bitcoin, the chinese bitcoin to use in China etc
They can creat a new alt coin stronger than bitcoin, if they have money and power, support from the media, why, because all people that lost the bitcoin boat want a new chance to get rich.

The Guardian is attacking the Bitcoin

Quote
Confused about Bitcoin? It's 'the Harlem Shake of currency'

Despite the hype, Bitcoin is used by very few people. It is not a legitimate currency just because it had a bubble

An obscure digital currency – used mostly for running drugs and laundering money for dictators – suffered a sudden crash on Wednesday, causing a minor sensation mostly among financial journalists and pundits.

Bitcoin is a currency created years ago by an obscure hacker in the spirit of subversion, to trade goods while dodging the gimlet eye of financial regulators. While theoretically it can be used for respectable online purchases, it is too complicated to buy and maintain for people who aren't online 18 hours a day, so it is used primarily to fuel a shadow economy of vice. It has boomed in value. You can barely throw a rock without finding some pundit opining on how "Bitcoin is the new gold" or how Bitcoin will undercut the modern financial system. Maybe someday, but no time soon.

It's affecting the credibility of the service and the trust in bitcoins. Some people will say, if one site is down I loose my bitcoins, the value of my bitcoins, too risky to invest in bitcons etc
